If partner is obligated to show ♣ shortage over 2NT (or some shortage) I would prefer that call as it allows me to better evaluate the usefulness of my ♣ suit an acceptable alternative would be a call that shows my ♣ so partner is able to better evaluate his hand

one of the red suits I have a preference for ♦ as the bidding is more likely to conceal a ♥ suit by RHO than a ♦ suit

3♠ needs to be a non forcing call which in effect limits how strong your overcalls can be Edit: sorry I mistakenly thought 3♦ was an opponents call. so 3♠ is forcing and IMO a correct call assuming ♦ tolerance or extra values

option 3 but no problem here so 1NT

over a direct X of 1♥ I would want to venture 4♠ but would settle for 3. Here I have to cut partner some slack because he is balancing and would still call 3♠ but I would conxider it the normal call.
