  1. E is completely nuts. N should either double or pass.
  2. Also we once played that all first-round bids were suction, and we convinced our teammates to do the same at the other table. We were very successful.
  3. i played that the opening lead of the ♦7 was a signal to partner that the contract, from my point of view, was unlikely to be beaten
  4. does the quality of the content of the posts matter?
  5. Well, obviously half the battle is knowing the right people, like someone who would hire someone like me to manage a restaurant part-time. And, you know, these aren't the right people: http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/4827/mcdonaldsd.jpg
  6. Welcome to the forums. Generally it works as follows: After a 1NT opener, people play 2♠ and 2NT as transfers to ♣ and ♦, respectively. Since 3NT is usually a more desirable contract than 5m, it's useful for opener to have the ability to show whether or not he has good support for the minor, because if he does, then responder's minor becomes a good source of tricks in 3NT. Thus, people "bid the gap" to either say they have fitting cards for the minor or that they don't have fitting cards, depending on your agreements with your partner. After that, 3 of the minor is generally used as a drop-dead bid, 3M is shortness in that M, and 3NT is to play.
  7. 3♦, which I don't believe suggests or denies slam interest.
  8. Someone hasn't read Rich Father, Poor Father... It's on my bookshelf. I was researching duplexes instead. The Art of the Deal is also in my queue.
  9. OK - you're possibly a wee bit younger than my son then - he just turned 21. I'm sure of it. Pub hours are not that compatible with playing much Bridge is the only downside! I'm 23. I got a degree in business but still plan to get a Masters. Hopefully the education will put me in a better position to manage a restaurant ;)
  10. And the final should count for a million.
  11. In fact, if you're serious, I have a son, trained chef - similar sort of age group to you I think - plays reasonable bridge too (possibly not quite to your standard) - and somehow you know how to get hold of some start up capital. Dunno - the idea just came into my head - dunno what he would say. Anyway - there's an idea... I am serious, but I believe something like that is a few years down the road for me. I still have more school to attend and I don't think I'm ready to commit to living in this city for long enough to grow a dining establishment. I can say, though, that a microbrewery with a wide selection of homebrews and good food would be an interesting contrast to all the dime-a-dozen, generic, traditional bars popular in Dallas. I think it could be successful.
  12. Excellent fish and chips are very difficult to find in the states. I would like to see this changed.
  13. I would like to open a pub here in the states. Pub food is fantastic.
  14. really? like beer? you dont have the super sugary syrupy stuff that we have here, perhaps. it is fabulous with ice cream+whipped cream+cherry.
  15. Thoughts about root beer? I was craving one last night. I like A&W. I also really like cream soda.
  16. no, i think your generalizations are close but not entirely true. i believe i heard somewhere that claws out is the relaxed state for cats. my cat, for example, always has her claws out when someone is petting her or when she's agitated. the former is particularly troublesome when someone is petting her and she gets startled, because she digs her claws into whatever surface shes on to jump off. she may think it's harmless; i claim quite the contrary. I have encountered cats that don't do this. Also, my cat has her claws out when she "kneads", and many do not. finally, one of her toys for certain provokes her to swat at it with claws all the way out. perhaps she's "fighting" it, but i don't think thats true. for each of her toys besides that one, half out sounds about right. more correct would be to say that your claims are usually true, but every cat is different. they all have their quirks.
  17. I'd make a negative double and think it's quite obvious. Assuming I did that and the auction is still the same, I would pass.
  18. I was 4 and I distinctly remember also that I had a difficult time writing the lowercase "e" so I always wrote my name in capital letters for a while. Somehow my brain thought it was some curly squiggle, and I never made the connection that it was just a "c" with an extra line in it.
