  1. It's not even hyperbole to say ND would not have beaten the SEC's 7th best team, Vandy, given how well Vandy was playing at the end of the season, but yeah, the SEC was probably slightly overrated all season. It is true none of the SEC schools had to play the Pitt juggernaut in the regular season. Just cupcakes OOC. Tough break for ND.

mgoetze, i'm sure there are others in this forum that i'm missing, but i'd be in favor of watching the games each week with you and jlall, especially in the playoffs. you seem to have some insight. not that others don't. just given the threads.

I didn't read the whole article so it may say something to this effect but: I doubt these stats even take into account the added equity from recent rules changes that benefit the offense (defenseless receiver, leading with the helmet, helmet to helmet contact, whatever they call it). Others are obviously right that the efficacy of the play call depends on what the defense is trying to prevent and also obviously sometimes its better to reduce 3rd/4th down variance by just getting the first down on 2nd and short, but I'm almost certain that OP is right that teams are too conservative, especially in this specific situation.
  5. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_driverless_car it seems a logistical nightmare until the proper infrastructure is built to separate human drivers from autonomous drivers just because human drivers are so bad at driving
  6. While we're at it, you can get them for under $15 at kmart
  7. I see, so when they said "not a lot" or "not expensive" they cited lingerie, silk, and perfume as their alternatives. Sorry, y66, but this is exactly what got OP in trouble. They couldn't explicitly say that they expect gold and diamonds; that would be "unreasonable" or "materialistic" or whatever word it is they use to justify their alternatives.
  8. we'll have to disagree then. death penalty would be more severe for a short period of time, but this bowl bans/lost scholarships punishment will continue to affect them for a whole decade and as a result will harm the football program more severely. the next class of students who will play on a PSU football team with the full 85 scholarships is currently in 4th grade. Perhaps the koolaid is strong enough at psu that they can find sufficient talent to win in a tough conference against opponents with more scholarships and fewer disincentives, but probably not. Also the death penalty affects other schools besides psu pretty significantly, and that should be considered when weighing the efficacy of the punishments.
  9. So you're saying if the death penalty includes subsequent sanctions such as lost scholarships and bowl bans, it's worse than a punishment that includes lost scholarships and bowl bans but no death penalty. We may have different definitions of success at "high levels" but psu will be irrelevant for at least a decade and hopefully more.

  12. the punishment pedo state received is worse than the death penalty
  13. variance: During a school trip to Santiago this spring, we weren't invited to Concha y Toro, whose facilities our program had visited annually for a while, because last year one of the students drank too much and vomited all over CyT's white marble floors. I try to avoid buying CyT wine.
  14. yeah, it has nothing to do with the fact that college football is a HUGE part of southern culture and everything to do with violence and gambling and alcohol. you guys are geniuses.
  15. ok. ill bite. how much time have you spent in the south in sept, oct, nov?
  16. Sorry when I said arbitrary tie breaker I'm not saying H2H shouldn't be an obvious tie breaker. I'm just saying Florida's season was much, much better than UGA's and I think most of us can agree with that.
  17. Also note: Both UGA and BAMA were the only teams in the SEC top 6 to only play 2 games against the rest of the SEC top 6. Mizzou had to play 5 of the top 6 (welcome to the SEC amirite) while the rest of the SEC top 6 played 3-4 games against the others.
  18. It's quite possible the two best teams in the SEC didn't even meet in the SEC Championship game due to a somewhat arbitrary tie breaker. Florida is really getting shafted by having to play Louisville in the Sugar Bowl. Compare Florida's resume to Georgia's: Florida: W @ TAMU W LSU W @ Vandy W USC L @ UGA W @ FSU UGA: W Vandy L USC (35-7) W UF L Bama W Nebraska in the Cap One Bowl(lol) That's like 4.5 quality wins for UF and 2 for UGA. If Florida could play and beat UO in a BCS game, it really would not be out of touch with reality to suggest a split title with the winner of the MNC, but unfortunately the SEC is too top heavy, and the rules prevent the BCS games from being scheduled based on how good the team is. Bama's resume for the sake of completion: W Mich W Miss St (maybe shouldn't be included?) W @ LSU L TAMU W UGA and if they win the MNC W ND for also ~4.5 quality wins. And I know this is completely irrelevant, so probably just ignore it, but next year Tennessee plays @Oregon, @Florida, UGA, USC, @Bama. Yes, UT is irrelevant next year, but when the Oregon game was scheduled both teams were relevant.
  19. will bump again after the MNC.
  20. bumping for LOL the amazing thing about this thread is that a bcs schedule like this: NCG: Notre Dame vs Alabama Rose: Stanford vs Florida Fiesta: Kansas State vs LSU Cotton: Oklahoma vs Texas A&M Sugar: Oregon vs Georgia Orange: Florida State vs South Carolina would provide some fantastic football to watch. And I think SEC teams would win 4 of those games. but LOL sort by OUT OF CONFERENCE SCHEDULE and CONFERENCE CHAMPION and become ncaaf expert, i guess.
