Let us take a look at manned space flight. Since everybody is aware that the live of the crew is at stake, we can assume that everybody tried to do the best job possible for each shuttle mission. But they failed twice. The Transrapid technology is designed not to allow 2 trains in the same area, but they managed to hit a service vehicle. The disaster in Chernobyl happened because safety devices were deactivated for an experiment. Almost every car, train and 'you name it' accident is caused by human misjudegment, laziness or error during design, production, maintenance or usage (abuse). Even the events at 9-11 needed a long chain of human "errors". 1) How could the terrorist get weapons on board? Laziness of security? 2) Why were the cockpit doors not secured enough? Design misjudgement? (El AL's cockpit doors have been looked against terrorists for ages) 3) Why can the transponder be deactivated? Design misjudgement? 4) Why can't flight security locate plains without transponder? Design misjudgement? ... All these little: "Who would have thought.." or "Nobody expected...." were important. Now the questions are: Can humans design, build, maintain and use a NPP without a severe accident to happen, and is it's safety against attacks (military or terroristic) guaranteed? And does this guarantee include the thousands of years the polluted waste could be abused or find it's way into nature. And are NPPs payable, if all these costs are included. And lets not forget, do we want more people to be able to build nuclear weapons? I don't think there are acceptable answers that would convince me to approve NPPs by anyone.

The timing problems in bridge are much more complex than in chess. e.g. Who's time is running while you wait for/listen to opps explanation? If a player asks many questions, is he just buying time, or needs a special information.

I have 5.0.3 and there is no "Save as" option (At least no for "common mortals"). There is also no "new list" button.

If my memory does not fool me, you need TD rights to export and import friend lists! You would need them on both nicks.
-
Really? You play a simple raise of a preempt as forcing? Sorry misread the auction

ACBL TD ruling
hotShot replied to SteelWheel's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Asking about bids create UI, so you should avoid asking unnecessary questions. Alert is a short form of: "Opps, please ask about this bid!", so if you ask about an alerted bid, no UI is generated. If I were a natural 2♦ bidder, after this inquiry i would check whether the question was used to show a ♦ control or to ask for one. And if there is indication of this, i will ask the TD for a score correction, because of use of this UI. An opponent teaching me about the meaning of my bid or about alert rules is a violation of Zero Tolerance. I think the ACBL is enforcing ZT. -
We hold now: ♠AQJ965 ♥-- ♦AT6 ♣AJ98 Would you bid 1♠ with? ♠AQJ965 ♥-- ♦AT6 ♣T982 or ♠AKQJ96 ♥-- ♦T96 ♣T982 or ♠AKQ964 ♥-- ♦T96 ♣T982 Partner who have seen my usual 1♠ bids with 8+ HCP will never expect me to be that strong. So bidding 1♠ will mislead them and they will often pass over a ♥ raise of LHO. So I double.

If you know the BBO ID: In the classic view of BBO, if you enter the chat-room area there is a find friends button where you can enter the ID. The better way is to enter the personal profile select the friends option/tab. There you can enter the ID if friends directly. It is useful to know the BBO ID's because you need them to reserve a table, cause you might have problems taking your seats at the table otherwise.

This hand is far more interesting as claimed. East has singles in both black suits and holding 4♦ with KQ in opps suit ensures partner is short in ♦. His values have to be in the black suits and this means lots of wasted values and little communication. Change ♣A4 to ♣KQ or ♠A to ♠K+♣J and there is no way to make 4♥ even 3 could get hard. South 2♦ bid indicates that ♦KQ are not well placed. What we have here is two hands that fit much better than usual so that 10 tricks are made. I can't blame west for not rising ♥ as 3♥ could show 6 cards as well. I would have opened this hand 4♥. Bidding game with hands like these stays guessing, so I'll guess right away to restrict opps communication.

One of the biggest problems of bridge is, that we don't even get our vocabulary properly defined.

Your bid may be natural because it has 3♦, but it "conveys a meaning other than ..." because it promises a 6 card side suit. So it is a convention!

Security problems with PDF

Upgrading the Acrobat Reader is a good Idea. If you can't do that, don't click on links where the URL of the PDF-file has this form: http://server/file.pdf#FDF=SOMETHING -
Use of Full Disclosure in ACBL tournaments

Actually, this 48 digit number looks about right. However, from the perspective of FD, it is a huge underestimate. This is just the possible auctions, but FD also takes into consideration all the various vulnerable conditions. No vul, they vul, we vul, both vul, and the effect of first, second, third and fourth seat on each of these auctions. Needless to say, the number is, well, unimaginable large. Don't forget that you will need a complete set of these sequences for each possible bidding system your opps play. I'm sure interventions with natural NT or Polish NT are handled differently. -
Crystallization is a delicate process, the mix of temperature and purity has to fit. Additionally it depends on the forming of initial start crystals. Stirring while freezing is usually very important, to prevent crystallization. Lecitin is an emulgator and helps to disperse water in anything that does not mix well with water. Additionally any substance that solves in water lowers the freezing point of the water. The yolk contains lecitin and it can be used for that, but don't ask me how much you need. But if you made sorbet, you should have enough.

where to send complain ACBL tourney ruling?
hotShot replied to arrows's topic in BBO Tournament Directors Forum
There are 2 main reasons that make AC's decisions better than TD decisions. 1) They have much more time to make a decision! 2) 3 people are less likely to overlook something important. -
Did you know that VAT was invented 1754/1755 by Earl Brühl in saxonia? Like any idea that makes money, it was copied worldwide.

Karl, you mentioned some valid points. The EU could make a better job, the process is slow and some important areas are still left at national level. But following the right path at slow speed, is better than going astray. Using the same currency will -over time- level prices all over EUROland. Income and pensions will have to adapt to that and even taxes will have to level out. So even if politicians are unwilling to reduce national administration in these areas, they can only slow down the process. Unfortunately for us global leveling between Burkina Faso and the Swiss ( check the HDI list) means a downgrade.

Without the system notes it's hard to see what went wrong. Some 2/1 player use the forcing 1NT relay to show a weak single suited hand. If that were the case here, west underbid and east showed a strong hand with his jump. If the 1 NT relay is used to show a strong hand, east jump to 4 makes no sense at all.

Everything involved in the quality of life: culture, education, social security and even basics like food depend on on the economic success of the society. If you take a look what happened to the free economic, you will notice that it is dominated by "global players". These global players have the power to decide which national economy may benefit from the creation of value they have. It's their bookkeeping that decides, where the main profit was made. Bangladesh or Denmark thats just a question of taxes and inflation. Economy is no longer government-controlled on a national level. If the government is not obedient enough, just tell them you need to fire a few thousand employees or move your whole business to somewhere else and they will realize that the domino effect of thousands of unemployed people will be that the reduced buying power will cause even more unemployed people. With fatal effects to the nations social security and to the national finances. Take a look at environmental problems, lots of them are at least multinational or global. They are beyond national control. Public health is another thing that outside of national control. You didn't like when Belarus was controlled from Moskau? How do you like what GASPROM did to them? National governments have no defense against economic power. To get all this under control again government has to get multinational or global too. There is no other way. The EU has to grow as fast as possible, even beyond the borders of Europe (although it may need to change it's name). The EU develops common political, social, environmental and economic standards and thats what we all need.

Holding 5♥ and a good ♠ stop are the main features of my hand. Possible bids are 1NT and 2♥. 1NT is defensive and i think holding the majority of HCP we should not give in, too early. So i prefer 2♥.

A special indy tournament for forums regulars

I think it the "space" between Double and ! that causes the trouble.
