I don't agree with the action taken. Opps exchanged the info that one has 16+ hcp and the other has 0-7. This means that they don't know who's hand this is and whether they have enough to reach game. Most important they don't know anything about distribution and fit. Your x showing ♠ shortness is very helpful to W, it tells him, that E is likely to have♠ support and where he should look for the trumps and how to plan the best play of the side suits knowing they will break badly too. You know that they will end up playing ♠ (or something else) finding some (very) bad trump break. By bidding pass and dbl you gave them an opportunity to further exchange information on cheap level. If you bid 2♦ instead of pass, opener can't bid 1♠. He and his partner is will be left with a little more uncertainty about partners strength and distribution and may not reach their best spot to play.

5♥ If I have a choice between to suits, i prefer to have the weaker suit as trump, and the stronger suit as source of tricks. So i prefer to play ♥ over ♠.

Balancing over OPP's NT
hotShot replied to flytoox's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Would you open this as weak 2? A lot of us would, so this is worth a 2♠ now. -
do you pass here ? if not what you bid?
hotShot replied to jocdelevat's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
pass is no option, so I bid 1♦. If i had a constructive hand I would make a jump, or bid NT. So partner will get the message that I'm weak. Partner will bid a 5 card major if he is (54)(40|31|22), or he may guess that i have a 3 card major and go for a moysian fit. -
Which auction is most absurd?

I miss the "other" option. Hand 1: SAYC players who open 1♦ even with longer ♣ are not so rare. They feel that showing 4♦ is better than showing 3+♣. I would not bid this way, but i've read this suggestion here in the forum before. Hand 2: This hand has 4 tricks, there is no way to get more. ♠AKDB ♥xxx ♦xxx ♣xxx has 4 tricks and you would not even open it. Without a source of tricks from partner this hand has little playing strength,it does not even have middle cards or a chance for a finesse. You need a lot from partner to get anywhere. You can't open 1m and rebid 1 NT, because that would hide your true strength. 2NT shows strength you do not have. so you have a rebid problem. Opening 1♦ solves most of the rebid problems, showing an impossible distribution, will make partner think. If this is an established partnership, there might be "partnership experience" that would have to be disclosed. -
If even pass is forcing, than dbl must be penalty.

How can anyone say Nth is responsible? I am sorry but this is totally off with the pixies. The 2S bid after two doubles is 100% forcing. North bid the hand very well. Well it depends much on the agreed meaning of the 1st dbl. If it is shape the first dbl may have been weakish and the 2nd dbl shows strength. If the first dbl showed strength the 2nd is (at least offering to be) penalty. North first X promised something like opening strength and tolerance for any other suit. After South showed 8-10 HCP with his NT bid, North knows that they have more points than opps and could/should hold 4-5♣'s e.g. 4405 or 4414 and his X is penalty. After opps ran to 2♦ north does not have a penalty dbl any more and south did not wish to dbl 2♦. So north with 12 HCP may try to take the chance playing (5)4-3 fit in ♠. South has shown strength and distribution with his 1NT bid, there is nothing more to say. So why should south raise a possible 7 card fit or without extra values?
-
Well, you seem to have everything under control, so why do you need to ask pard anything? :) Because I don't want to go down in 5♣, if they can't make 4M and I want to be in 6/7♣ if partner has the right cards. The necessary pieces of information, will come from the bids that are possible after a constructive 1♣ opening.
-
There is no need to preempt with this hand. If opps bid 4M, i can still bid 5♣, if they try 5M than I'm positive that the bad trump break, will bring them down. So lets involve partner in this decision process.
-
1♠, I'll go slow here, if partner does not have wasted ♦ values, 6♠ will not need more than the 9-10 HCP, he's likely to have.
-
The ♥Q is more likely to be part of a 2 or 3 card ♥. And this length is more likely to be with RHO. If it's 3, it will make a trick anyway, but if I use ♥A or K now Qx will (almost) always make a trick.

Holding a 5 looser hand opposite a partner who shows signs of life you should reach game. I think the problem is the 2nd double. South 1NT denied a 4-card ♠ suit and should show stopper in ♦ and ♥. While partners ♦ values may be wasted, He should hold something in ♣ or ♠ too. Since you only need partner to cover 1 of your looser to make 3NT and 2 to make 4♠ you need to find a strong forcing bid over this 1NT. X followed by a suit of your own should show a strong hand, while another x may be misunderstood as penalty, since your first x may have promised ♣ length.

I've done a little testing and here is the result: 1) The title of the the window for the bidding explanation, is now translated, so i needed to change that. 2) If you use a MACRO to define the window name it does not work! If you don't use a MACRO you are only able to can only use one word from the title. And it must be unique so that it does not appear in any other window (e.g. BBO Forum title ...). Example: MACRO ToTable "Bridge Base Online" BUTTON glP %Chat% %ToTable% ^sglp {enter} and this is not working any more. If I change it to: BUTTON glP %Chat% Online ^sglp {enter} it is working at the table. I'm not in the mood for further testing. Perhaps someone has an idea what is why strings are no longer the same....

OKS, creates keyboard and mouse Events and sends them to a window. OKS identifies the window to send the messages to, by scanning the window title (the text displayed in the blue bar on the upper side). Example: If opps e.g. click on a bid a dialog box appears with "Explain" in the title. If you click on the prepared button of OKS it will send the explanation text to the first window it finds with "explain" in its title. So if you have changed something about the main window title, maybe changed the character coding or something like that, OKS will no longer find the the right window.

Well Helene they know everything you ever seached with google, they know every webpage you ever visited that has google ads on it. So remember: Did you ever visit a webpage about colorblindness? If no, remember that they make references to other people who searched for the same keywords or gmailed about similar products. Considering the average age of bridge players, you are lucky they know your real gender and age .....

The difference between 1♠ and 2♠ seems to be that 1M is 3+ cards. After 1♦, if 1NT shows 10-11 HCP, what can you bid with 6-9 HCP and no 4card Major? e.g. with (32)35 You need to bid a 3 card major so that partner can bid 1NT.
-
I don't think it matters what system they play, they have to provide full disclosure. They even have to disclose partnership experience! So if partner has bid 1♥ over 1♦ with a 3 carder before, they have to disclose that.
-
The disclosure style of your opponents is ....... very poor and that in unacceptable. But this demonstrates some important points. While you can make one bid each each turn, but there are a lot of bids you don't make. These unmade bids carry much more information than the bid made. This is the case in any partnership. When using a new system, convention or even treatment, getting good results may be caused by incomplete disclosure, unprepared opps or because it was a good idea. I bet he first 2 reasons are more frequent.

Politeness at the table
hotShot replied to ArcLight's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Following the bridge laws a claim has to be made with stating the line of play. So if you don't state the line of play you expect opps to say "sorry" for not seeing your winning line? Well perhaps he saw the winning line and thought you where one of the usual BBO-"Experts" you meet every day ...... -
The number of spades is irrelevant. Is holding 3 spades short? I don't think so. But partner holds 3.33 on average so opps usually don't have a fit. You hold 2 spades: than it is 11 for the other 3. So each player including your partner has 3.66 spades meaning that 66% of the time opps don't have a spade fit. So you lose 2/3 times by passing. Not short enough? Suppose you have 1 spade, so opps have a spade fit on average, but with bad trump break and with the minority of HCP, so if they overcall they are likely to go down. So what should keep you from bidding? If partner has ♠ values he can bid NT on the same level or you can penalty double 2♠. If your partner does not have 4♠, your opps have a 9 card fit and you will have a 9 card fit or 2 8card fits. So if your partner has no NT bid and no double for 2♠, your side does not have wasted walues in ♠ and following the Law of Total Tricks you can push the bidding bidding to the 3 level. Suppose you hold no spade: If opps bid ♠ they are playing against partners 5 card suit and your side has half of the HCP. Wonder if opps like horror films...... Again if your partner has good ♠ values he can overbid NT or you will double. If his ♠ are not strong enough for that, remember that if opps have a fit (and it is almost sure they have a ♠ fit) you have a fit somewhere else and partner does not have a lot of wasted ♠ values. So you will make about any 1,2 and some 3 level contracts you like. The longer opps spades are, the better you combined hands will work together. Again there is no need to be scared.

how you judge this bid as td
hotShot replied to jocdelevat's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Your partner NT showed 15-17/16-18 HCP so on average the other players should hold 8HCP each. This is why interference after strong NT is usually weak with shape. A NT opening is no guarantee for an uncontested auction. You hold 9 HCP a bit more than average, so you should be prepared to find opps weak. As to the quality of the bid: If it's worth a 2♥ opening, than you can overcall a 1NT opening with 2♥ too. -
If the dealer passes usually the other axis has the majority of points in 2/3 of the cases. So you need to score plus. If you have 10/11 HCP in 4th seat, you will often find your partner with 11 HCP and a flat hand. Contracts on 1/2 level can often be made with 18+ HCP, sometimes helped by opps unlucky lead. The number of spades you have is irrelevant, you should open with (10)11 HCP in 4th seat whenever you have a decent distribution.
-
If I pass, opps will easily bid something like 1M ... 2M and I have to enter with 3♦. If I pass and opps bid 1M .... 3M, than we are out of this game. If I have 6♦ maybe someone has 6M's. Would i like to hear 2M from opps or partner? Can i show my color over a 2M preempt? So I bid 3♦, partner will find 3NT if he's strong and stops the side suits. If opps have 4/6M they will have a hard time getting their act together after 3♦.

Politeness at the table
hotShot replied to ArcLight's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Well sometimes i don't see it, reject the claim and after the next cards are played, i get it and claim myself. Additional Note: My impression is that if you miss the "YES" button even by a pixel. this is taken as "No". -
