More average and average + should be awarded
movingon replied to movingon's topic in BBO Tournament Directors Forum
Thanks, Art... but, yes, I do this. And I bid and play as fast as I can to catch up when there has been slow bid and play (sometimes to my detriment), but I don't recall the last average plus that I received due to an unfinished board. (One of the veteran directors, however, has asked my partner or me to let him know if we are not able to finish the round after he has observed opps painfully slow play. I do appreciate that.) Perhaps it would be better to slow down, oneself, and just not start that third board. (But, somehow, this doesn't seem right. But it also doesn't seem right to have the third board adjusted to the worst possible result when this does happen.) Don't get me wrong. On the whole, BBO ACBL directors are really very good and can be trusted to do what is right and fair. I have had few complaints over the years. -
This post may be "duplicative" as I see that Fred started a terrific thread here entitled "Using Gib when adjusting scores," but I have been wanting to write on a related subject for some time now. (In fact, the Gib thread shed some light on this subject for me.) Three times lately, in ACBL speedball tournaments my partnerships have been awarded the worst possible result on hands when in all three cases our opponents were slow throughout the 3 boards because of poor connections, AND these results were clearly not certain. In one case, the opponents were weak players and were awarded a game making contract that required a trump smothering play. Our result was near the bottom of the field. In the second instance, the director assumed best defense which didn't look all that clear to me. In the most recent incident, the field was making 5 spades and we were awarded 4 spades because, according to the director, "the best line of play would result in making 4". I stuck around after the game, arguing my point with the director for some time. I had earlier called about the slow play of the defender (again a poor connection) and told him how I would have played the hand resulting in making 5 (after the fact, of course, so probably meaningless). I believe our result was a 28% or something like that. Eventually, however, either being convinced by my argument or just being tired of my whining, the director adjusted the result to average. That was more acceptable, especially after being initially awarded a 28% but I knew that if I had been given just 10 more seconds I would have made 5. I am thinking that some boards should just not be adjusted. I am also thinking that if some boards cannot be adjusted and a pair has been particularly slow throughout the round that an average plus should be considered. Noreen (movingon)

I noted that an 18 board tournament was advertized about a week ago, but I have not seen any since. I hope that BBO gives more of these a chance! I am interested, for sure.

I see that I can get on the web-based site. I have not used that before. Perhaps it is time to try it out.

Is anyone else having problems getting to the main BBO site? I played a game this morning, but as of the last hour, the "Logging in. Please Wait" bar sits and hangs on my computer.

We don't play Ogust, by the way, but I know that some people do. I probably should have bid, but I didn't expect an Ace (or an outside King, actually) in partner's hand, and I didn't like my 3 clubs, the fact that the opener was behind my Kings, and the fact that we were red. Should I have bid--either immediately or after the opener bid 3 clubs over my partner's jump overcall? This is imps. [hv=pc=n&s=saq2hkj82dk98c872]133|100[/hv]

My right hand opponent opens 1♣! (precision) I bid 1♥ LHO bids 1♥ Partner does not accept the bid. How should the director rule and what laws do you reference in making this ruling? Thanks. Noreen (movingon)

white against red 7 spades to the J109xxxx 6 clubs to the AJ10xxx Do you pass, or open 1, 2, 3, or 4 spades?

good. The director said to score it up as was and that he would look at the hand after the game. He did adjust to 3 hts down 2. I don't think there was a conversation with either of the opponents. In any case, I was satisfied that we received the score we deserved (and considerably much better than the 0 that was initially recorded)!

I like 2nt. That says it all in one shot, I think. Partner can pass or bid on.

At the local club, the third to last round, I am playing a 3 heart contract. In the middle of the hand, I inquire of my right hand opponent if their partnership is playing standard or upside down count. She responds, "standard." I find out shortly after that my left-hand opp had three in the suit and not the expected 2. As a result I go down three in a contract that most of the field is in down 2. I say to my right hand opponent, "Then you weren't play standard count?" She says, "Well, I play standard count." (note the emphasis on the "I".) Her partner speaks up and says, "I thought we agreed when we started to play both upside down count and attitude." She says, "I have upside down attitude and standard count on my card." I look at her card, and I see that she does. I ask to look at LHO's card and he also has upside down attitude and standard count marked. This pair has already played 20 hands, and they are both flight A players. How would you rule as the director?

ok, thanks... In the older version, which I am presently using, you can click on any of the robot's bids and there will be an explanation. (I guess i don't need those explanations for "standard" bidding.)

Using the new web version, playing Robot tournaments... Nothing pops up when I click on the robot partner's bids. Is anyone having the same difficulty?

He didn't make a pentaly double. He bid the opponent's suit at the 4 level and got doubled!
-
As opponent, if we are only 3 or 4 tricks into the hand, i will tell the opp what has been played. I don't know if I am allowed to tell my new partner the same.. but I would think I would be able to.

Is it forcing?

I do like the idea though of a double or redouble over an opp's bid after partner has shown 5 spades as denying 3 or 4 card support with extra values... might have to adopt that view with my partners.
-
I agree that if partner's 1 spade bid promises 5 that I do not need to give a support double or redouble with only 3 but rather can just bid 3spades.. My decision will partly depend on whether I want to give my left hand opponent an opportunity to take another bid.

ok. Thanks!
