Can someone explain to me what opponents mean when they announce that they play "Ace--even; King--Odd" ? Thanks!

overcalling 1 spade with 3 spades?
movingon replied to movingon's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
:) cute.. thanks... That is basically how I would have viewed the bid, as asking for a spade stopper. this is what she wrote back to me today(and, incidentally, evidently it wasn't her partner that made the overcall but rather the opps): "Opps did this against us and their explanation was Super Michaels........ I said Michaels already shows a strong (or weak) hand so why jump. They said it showed equivalent of a two opener with Hearts & at least one minor and and a singleton or void in Spades. I wonder how often that hand comes up. Margaret liked it, I did not. I said I would rather use it looking for 3nt." Interesting -
Thanks... I am still using the old version of BBO. Perhaps this will be a way I can ease myself into the web version. :)

Not long ago, I read that BBO was going to offer 25 cent quick tournaments featuring 8 boards that a player has not yet played in previous tournaments. This could be played anytime. How do I find and register to these mini-tournies? Thanks. Noreen(movingon)

scarcity of the 12 board mp robot tournaments?
movingon replied to movingon's topic in BBO Tournaments Discussion
I expect that the introduction of the "classic" mp tournaments (those which allow the robots to play the hands they declare) have cut into the number of non-classic mp robot tournaments that I like so well. -
scarcity of the 12 board mp robot tournaments?
movingon posted a topic in BBO Tournaments Discussion
I very much like the 12 board mp tournaments (not the classic tournaments that allow the robots to play the hands they declare). I think the winners of the 12 board mp tournaments generally win because of skill--less so with the imp tournaments and the classic mp tournaments. But these tournaments seem to be offered less often now. I had hoped to play a couple of tournaments this morning but found none! What is the deal? Noreen p.s. I would play the 18 board tournaments which this morning were offered twice in my time zone, but hardly anyone plays those!!! -
Thank you. ok, so what if the singletons in the east and west hands were swapped? What if the rho had the stiff club and the lho had the stiff spade? Can you make 5 spades without giving up on trying for 6? I know you could lead up to the q of diamonds at trick 2 or 3 (after pulling 1 spade), but this loses the possibility of 6.

Yes... that works--opps can take their club ruff and that is it...
-
You will find that your lho has a stiff club

After the second heart was ruffed, everyone followed to a spade.

It was mps and no one was vulnerable. Why the question is how to play it for making 5, I don't know!
-
sorry all... I just noticed that further down the page of the email I received was another statement accompanied by a question. So I guess we now have a play question. N/S play 4S. Opps take A of hearts and then lead K of Hearts, both honors in West hand. What is the best play to make 5 Spades?
-
good advice about posting just the hand in question.... will do that in the future...
-
I have asked the person who sent this hand to me those questions. I believe it is mp but I do not know the vulnerability. will post that when I find out.

KQ76 3 Q7 AJ10762 AJ985 Q6 A1086 K6 West opens 1 Heart, North overcalls 2 Clubs, East bids 4H........What is South's bid?

Such rudeness I don't understand. I was curious as to how others would respond. I did not know why my friend sent the hand out or what the result at the table could be. My friend sent the hand out to a number of us and the results were extremely varied. I had intended to share the recommendations made here but those were wildly varied too (and many of these recommendations are based an specific partnership understandings). I still sthink 4nt keycard blackwood is as good a bid as any. Partnership will be playing this in either 5 or 6 hearts. It will be a long time before I post another hand here, for sure. By the way, my friend indicated that she found this hand on Bridge Baron and it recommended a splinter.

This hand was sent to me and I had chosen the 4nt response--find out right away if partner has 3 keycards. The partner's hand was sent to me this morning: The other hand was: xx, AKxxx, AQx, xxx Spades split 2/2 so makes 7 without a club lead and 6 with a club lead.

Partner opens 1 heart. What do you bid with this holding? AK10xxxx 109xx J x

More average and average + should be awarded

Thanks for your response. But it was my LHO who needs to drop his K from his KJ in order to set me. -

I had another one of those, opps with bad connection (this one from Poland) leaving me with less than 1 minute to play a hand and the director assumes best defense and puts me down 1 on an adjustment. I am in 3nt. Opponent, after jump overcalling 2 hearts on my left, leads a heart. The doubleton Q is on board. I play it and his partner takes the Ace and returns a heart. I play low (I hold the King with 2 others. In retrospect, I should have taken the 2nd heart, hoping the jump overcaller had 6 hearts but I am trying to play fast in the 30 seconds I have left). In any case, my rho switches to a club. I have 5 to the Ace and play the Ace when time is up. This Ace has not yet registered. Ok lho has doubleton Kj of clubs. If he dumps his King under my Ace the hand gets set. If he doesn't I will make the hand. Is it fair to assume best defense here? Again, opps have left me no time to play the hand. I even said to the director while waiting for my lho to make the opening lead that is not forthcoming that with less than a minute left I didn't really want to play this hand! Why not? precisely because I have been burned by best defense assumed in the past! I asked for an adjustment but none came, of course. We had a fine game going by the way. This last board was worth 15%. Got that off my chest, anyway! Noreen -
Good! I would think ACBL would approve the change as well. I played an ACBL robot tourney today in which the robot slaughtered two hands. Thus two results were definitely not a result of my skills but poor luck.
