Opening Bid makes 13 IMP difference
mikl_plkcc replied to jh51's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Playing standard methods, North is at the upper end of limit raise, South is far above the upper end of one-level opening. Therefore, South should immediately start investigating slam hearing the limit raise. However, things get messed up if opponents compete, therefore, I prefer the 2♣ opening. Actually, my biggest objection to open 1♠ is something like #10, that can easily miss a game when opened 1♠. Therefore, if I think that a sub-minimum responder can get us a game, I open 2♣, to prevent the deal from passing out. (I also like to open 2♣ with a big offensive hand with no defensive values, i.e. only one trick short of game contained in my own hand, but without any defensive values in all the other suits.) -
How to improve bidding
mikl_plkcc replied to pablo2110's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
No matter what the tools are, bidding minor suit slams are very difficult (no space!!) such that I just bid it holding 33 points and hope it makes. However, with major suits, I can just easily cuebid when a game-force is created at the 3-level, if just a perfect hand is needed for slam, so there is no difficulty to me. Actually, slams are too rare so that you don't need to even care about them in MPs! -
4504 reverse?
mikl_plkcc replied to jillybean's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I would have reversed, since 2♣ is non-forcing. -
How do I get to these slams (if I can)?
mikl_plkcc replied to hirowla's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
In my natural system documented at http://bridge.wikia.com/wiki/User%3AMiklcct/systems/natural_system My system is based on 15-17 NT and 4-way transfers, however, the following auctions are modified to a 12-14 NT and 3-way transfers to match the top post: MODIFIED ON 23RD JUNE: DUMP BLACKWOOD AND USE 4NT AS TRUMP CUE MOST OF THE FOLLOWINGS WON'T WORK IF VOIDWOOD IS IN USE! Hand 1 - Dealer is South [hv=pc=n&s=saq96haq95dj72ct5&n=s2hk7dak643cak976]133|200[/hv] 1NT (12-14) - 3♠ (5-5 minors short in spades, GF) 4♦ (agreeing the trump suit, responder with 17 HCPs + 3 DPs can now start cuebidding) - 4NT (trump A cue, denies hearts and spades 1st round controls) 5♦ (I worry about the clubs) Due to the lack of bidding space, South cannot tell North about his hearts and spades, and North cannot tell South about his clubs, therefore, slam cannot be bid safely (However, it may worth the risk continue cuebidding the slam hoping the opponents cannot cash the ♣AK since we have more than 33 points in total) Hand 2 - Dealer is North [hv=pc=n&s=s63haj876dq5cak93&n=sak9hqdakj984cj82]133|200[/hv] 1♦ - 1♥ 3♦ (suggests 6 of the suit, 19+, GF) - 4♥ (advance cue-bid) 4♠ - 5♣ (denies diamond ace) 5♥ (second round control) - 6♣ 7♦ (everything is here!) Hand 3 - Dealer is South [hv=pc=n&s=s7hq7632d5cakqj53&n=saqj98hakjdq63c86]133|200[/hv] 1♣ - 1♠ 2♥ (a reverse!, suggests 5 clubs and 4 hearts) - 3♦ (4SF, to game) 3♥ (suggests 6 clubs and 5 hearts, can't play 3NT due to lack of diamond stopper) - 4♠ (advance cuebid) 5♣ (cuebid, denies hearts A) - 5♥ (I worry about the diamonds, so let's sign off) South cannot continue bidding since he cannot know the trump A and K, a diamond trick and a heart trick can easily get lost. -
No way, the preempt worked. West was sure that 5♠ goes down but he has no method to find that whether 6♥ makes. By the way, the first double was bad, but it does not affect the further preempt. East's hand suggests that 4♠ makes, therefore, he may just bid 5♥ as a sacrifice. 4♠ is either weak or strong, and is to play. P.S. I missed the vulnerability, 5♥ is to make.

Gambling 7NT?

I leaded the queen and the slam made. Should I lead the 7 instead? Using complicated systems, you get to bid games and slams with more than 80% accuracy in uncontested auctions, and even make slams that nobody else can bid, but give away so much information that you can't hope the opponents to get a wrong defence and make a percentage game (at IMPs), or get an overtrick that nobody else can (at MPs) and also you lose so many natural bids that signing off at 1 or 2-level while finding a 5-3 fit is nearly impossible. All these conventions like Jacoby 2NT, Bergen raises, checkback Stayman, etc., either take up possible useful jump responses or make simple things complicated (like losing the natural 2NT response), which give away information to opponents. Using simple systems, you just bid games and slams by your first impression and simple hand evaluation using HCPs and distributional points, which results in only 45% of the games made (at IMPs) or 50% of the games made (at MPs), but you just give so little information away that the opponents need to guess which suit to lead, and once they get the wrong lead, you can make otherwise unmakeable games or get an overtrick at makeable games. You just use natural bids all the way through, even after interference, you just continue with all your natural bids to the number of trumps you hold in total. You also don't risk the opener pushing you to game when you respond with 0 HCPs, using natural weak jump shifts. Which way of bidding do you prefer?

Thanks, I've put it in the file and now it pop up a Konqueror window and works.
-
Although 2♦ only shows 5 ♦s, I am hoping partner to rebid 2♠ again and find the fit.
-
In standard bidding, north should bid 3♥. (opener 18 points and responder 13 points = slam interest) However, I think a method which 2♥ = 12-17 points (with distribution) and 3♥ = 18-20 points GF is also playable. In this case, north would bid 2♥, south would then raise to 4♥ immediately. If north has a great hand and bid 3♥, south would start cuebidding at the 4-level.
-
As West, I would offer my 4-card ♥ suit, as raising ♠ with a doubleton certainly leads to a disaster.
-
2♦ certainly: 6-card ♦ suit, hope to find a ♦ fit. NT is not safe: no ♣ stopper and they have 50% chance to find the correct lead.

Pre-emptive Raise versus Limit Raise
mikl_plkcc replied to 32519's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I like to use simple sequences to do simple things, i.e. I hate bidding another suit first and then show support later when I know that game is certain. When I bid 45% games, it is extremely important not to leak any information to the opponents when it does no help to our game. About my previous "stressed" 2♥ raise, if responder actually has 4-card support, he would raise to 3 himself upon interference, and opener knows responder has 4 trumps. If responder passes and opener raises to 3, that means opener has 6 trumps. -
I'm now currently running Debian Wheezy 64-bit, but I get a white area in the window when I click the "Help me find a game!" button.

4th Seat Opening Bid
mikl_plkcc replied to johnu's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
1♣ is terrible. The opponents are very likely to enter the auction and find their major suit game. 3♣ and 4♣ are not good either. Partner will raise according to trump length, not general strength. I have 9.5 tricks already, I just hope that partner can give one to two side suit tricks and make the 5♣. At the first or second seat, I would open this 1♣ and bid constructively; at the third seat, this is a definite 5♣. -
An absolute pass for me. I'd like them going down 3 or 4 if 1♠ becomes the final contract.

Pre-emptive Raise versus Limit Raise
mikl_plkcc replied to 32519's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I don't like Jacoby 2NT because it takes away the 10-12 invitational to 3NT bid. Also, I don't like Jacoby 2NT because it shows much more information to the opponents (like the shortness) even when there is no slam interest, and slams are very rare. The more information given to the opponents, the more chance they can find the correct defence to make games go down. -
Which suit to transfer to?
mikl_plkcc replied to Quartic's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I would transfer to ♦s first (though I like to play 3♣ as a transfer to 3♦ over 1NT), then bid ♥s, offering a choice of game. I personally hates any kinds of artificial 2NT response to 1NT unless one never invite. I need an invitation available. In the past, I left all 3-level responses to 1NT undefined (except 3♣ transfer to 3♦), now, I think of a usage of 3♥ and 3♠, indicating game-forcing minor 2-suiters and shortness in the named major suit. -
Why don't opener bids 2NT if he doesn't have more to say? 1♠ - 2♥ (5+ ♥) Shouldn't a hand unable to bid at the 3-level bid 2NT? Partner would easily raise the 2♠ to 4♠ holding 2♠s only, which is a disaster! (a 2/1 response denies support)

I installed wine and got the Windows client running, but it is very slow playing cards. It stops responding even when watching vugraphs. The most thing that I dislike the Windows client is the inability to display E-W cards vertically, thus taking a LOT of my 1280*1024 screen, covering N-S cards.
