  1. Ah, okay, I missed covering the 8 with the J, thanks guys. I think my partner figured that out when I discussed it with him but I didn't quite get what he meant. I just thought it was a neat suit blocking/keeping off lead problem, as wyman said. Two more questions on the hand though. The auction at the table: (1♦)-2♣-(P)-2♥ (P)-2♠-(P)-4♥-AP 1♦ was a 2+ suit, playing 10-12 NT. [hv=s=sk108haq8dk1086ck102]133|100|[/hv] What do you lead vs. 4♥? 2nd question (refer to diagram in original post): Do you rate to make the right play at trick 1 against any spade lead single dummy (3/5 leads)? I think I'd fail against the K and 10 but succeed against the 8. Better yet, if it starts ♠8, 3, ?, are you gonna find the play of the 9 as East?
  2. [hv=d=w&v=n&n=sj763hda74caj7654&w=sk108haq8dk1086ck102&e=sq954h752dj932c93&s=sa2hkj109643dq5cq8]399|300|Scoring: MP Contract: 4♥ by S [/hv] Play or defend? Pretty sure the best lead is the 8♠ but I get all confused from there.
  3. I guess the two options I narrowed it down to were to have west lead a spade and to let partner play it. If west leads a spade I get a lead into my K... ... but if I let partner play it then they don't have complete count on the hand at trick 1 and their defense may be a lot harder. Partner's hand is virtually unknown save the fact they have around opening values and 4+ hearts.

You can choose to (I think): Accept and let partner play Have LHO lead a spade Have LHO lead a non-spade etc, I forget if there are any other options. Thoughts?
  6. X of a splinter suggests a sacrifice? Or is that not a common treatment? X for me cause that's what I'd play.
  7. I said: 1) [hv=d=w&v=n&s=skhakj98xd9xcj10xx]133|100|Scoring: IMP (1NT, 15-17)-P-(2♥ xfer)-? [/hv] 2) Playing SAYC, partner is a beginner, but would understand/be made to understand 3♣ as a limit raise [hv=d=w&v=n&s=skhakj98xd9xcj10xx]133|100|Scoring: IMP (1NT, 15-17)-P-(2♥ xfer)-? [/hv]
  8. 37. Weeeaksauce. Only one pair I'm upset I missed though, others I could have just randomly guessed at :P Mini-spoiler, maybe don't read if you haven't done the quiz yet: it never occurred to me to just start typing in conventions I know, I would have gotten 4 more
  9. agree, despite it being somewhat odd to try for slam after making a non-forcing? bid. Completely fine with the preempt, 1♥, 3♥, and pass are lame.
  10. [hv=d=n&v=n&s=s3hak10862d85cj872]133|100|Scoring: IMP Opps silent: 1♣-1♥ 1♠-?[/hv] You haven't agreed XYZ or anything and haven't discussed whether 1♠ is unbalanced or not. Follow-up question, related but not specific to this hand: If the auction goes 1C-1H-1S-3H-3NT-?, what kind of hand does 4C by responder show here?
  11. A friend and I have been working on this goofy (possibly terrible) club system that is fully ACBL GCC legal except it uses a modified KI over 1♥ (and of course we may want to use it sometime). The relevant structure is as follows: 1♥: 10-14, exactly 4 hearts, unbalanced, longer second suit unless 4x1. .....1♠: 0-3 spades, f1rd ..........1NT: 5+ spades unless 4414 or 4441 ..........2♣: 5+ clubs unless 1444 ..........2♦: 5+ diamonds ..........Higher bids forms of maxes .....1NT: 4+ spades, f1rd ..........Natural responses Simply switching 1♠ and 1NT responses is kinda ugly since we'll miss 5-3 spade fits pretty often (in case you were wondering, 1♠ openers are also EXACTLY 4 spades). Also, I don't think having 1♠ responses being 3+ in length is GCC legal? Anyway, I'm not sure if anyone has run into this problem before or if there are any suggestions for it.
  12. Opponents silent: 1♥-1♠ 2♠-? 1) If 1♥ shows 5+, and 2♠ promises 4 card support, would you ever play in 3NT? 2) As responder, you hold: AKQxx, A, Kxx, 10xxx. What do you bid next in the above sequence?
  13. X is just extras, he could be 3532 in the worst case (if you'd bid 2♣ on that shape and not open 1NT ala what helene said). It's tempting to pass and try for something like heart, heart ruff, club, heart ruff, and later score the ♠A and something else, but that seems like we're putting all our eggs in one basket and playing for a specific (though relatively likely) layout, not to mention we really want -2. 3♣.
  14. 2NT on the first and 3♦ on the second, I'm allowed to have mins for my bids as long as I have my bids.
  15. [hv=d=s&v=b&s=s73hdaq109ckj108653]133|100|Scoring: IMP 2♣*-(4♣**)-P-(6♥) ? * 2♣ = 10-14, 5+♣s, no 4 card major ** undiscussed[/hv] a ) agree with 2♣ opening? 1♣ would have been 15+ unbal or 20-21 or 24+ bal, higher ♣ bids preemptive. b ) what now? If you pass or X, what do you lead? Opponents are good (though goofy) junior players and it's pretty late at night.

  17. No interference from the opponents: 1♦-1♠ 2♦-2♥ My partner and I have had a lot of discussion about this auction recently, trying to decide exactly how we want to handle it. Just wanted to see if anyone had a strong preference on what 2♥ should promise in terms of strength and hand type. Comments welcome. If this has come up before, thread links are welcome. We play big club, but input on any style welcome.
  18. No. Never say never. [hv=d=s&v=e&n=sxxxhkj9xdkxxckxx&w=shaqxxxxxxdqjtxxc&e=skqjtxxhdxcqjxxxx&s=saxxxhtda9xxcatxx]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] It is possible that this is the layout. Whether North should double 4♥ is a matter of partnership agreement. Now, I was not there. And I am not saying that this is the actual hand. But it is possible. That is a super gross double. Here's the actual hand. I personally agree with N's X, just bad luck that I found the pass for -790? I don't know how often I should expect 4♥ to make but I don't think it's that often. Then again, gotta ask if it's worth taking out insurance with 4♠ (making here) [hv=d=s&v=e&n=sxxxhkj9xdkxxckxx&w=shaqxxxxxxdqjtxxc&e=skqjtxxhdxcqjxxxx&s=saxxxhtda9xxcatxx]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv]
  19. [hv=d=s&v=e&s=saxxxh10da9xxca10xx]133|100|Scoring: IMP 1♦-(4♥)-X-(P) ?[/hv] Would it make a difference at MP? Edit for additional info: If it makes any difference, LHO is a junior but one you haven't played against all that much and doesn't seem super wild, and partner is a true expert.
  20. I'd bid 2C before X (but would still bid 5/6C depending on my mood) (re-edit: or 3NT online)
  21. matmat's ratio would be N/A since i've never seen him play.
  22. [hv=d=e&v=n&s=sqjhdaj109xxckq10xx]133|100|Scoring: IMP (3♥)-?[/hv] Opponents have managed 20 VP through 4 matches (7 boards each) in a 8 team bracketed RR and have already butchered a cold game earlier in this match.
  23. how do you know what NT range they play? :) Ya this wasn't in our NT range, only conceivable opening systematically was 2♣. And I guess I should have meant on the first one, 3NT or 4S? Pass wasn't an option with partner's usual hand type.
  24. [hv=d=s&s=saxhqxxdqxckqj109x]133|100|Scoring: IMP Opps silent: 2♣-3♠-? 2♣=6+, limited to 15 3♠=inv 6+ suit[/hv] [hv=d=s&s=saxhqxxdqxckqj109x]133|100|Scoring: IMP Opps silent: 2♣-3♠-? 2♣=6+, limited to 15 3♠=inv 6+ suit[/hv] First one is probably WTP and I'm just resulting, but I'm curious about style on the 2nd one.
  25. [hv=d=n&v=n&s=shkxxdaxcaqj98xxx]133|100|Scoring: IMP P-(1♥)-?[/hv] What are you bidding?
