  1. Yeah, even I think I was smoking something when I Xed 3♥ (Guess I'm still on it if I can't keep my mouth shut :))
  2. North is cold turkey, South had one too many pan-galactic garble blasters. I mean, what use is a void splinter here anyway when, if they really want to, they can double cue diamonds?
  3. It has to be something like this, pretty much down to the exact shape, since partner hasn't said anything about their hand yet. We don't know if they have a 4243 11 count or a 5071 18 count. I actually would never bid it for this reason, since it's a crime to waste 3 levels of bidding when we know pretty much nothing about partner's hand, but if I did I guess this is what it would mean. Edit: I guess RKC for ♥ is useful when we have 8 solid hearts, but I'm not really sure when else it's useful, and I feel like the balanced 17 count comes up more often than the huge hand with hearts.
  4. My partner and I would like a host for today around 5 PM US east coast time on today, the 22nd, though if it's a little later (up through maybe 7) that is fine as well. Thanks!
  5. I have some fondness for 4♦, since partner couldn't rebid NT some suit is wide open. It sucks but I hate everything from 3♥ to 3NT. The only other bid I would consider is 4♣, but ew. Please do not pass, it can be hazardous to your health!
  6. I would like to have opponents who pass like that every time because I'm fairly sure I would score a 90% on those hands.
  7. [hv=d=w&v=n&n=s109873hqj75da8cqj&s=sakh1062dk9764ck106]133|200|Scoring: IMP (P)-P-(P)-1♦ (P)-1♠-(P)-2♦ (P)-2♥-(P)-2NT AP[/hv] Yes, I would rebid 1NT with south's hand, but this is what happened at the table. Lead is ♣9, ducked by RHO. What's the best suit to attack (and how would you explain it to an intermediate player)? (Adv+ feel free to hide answers, but I'm looking at this somewhat from a "how to explain this" sort of view)
  8. I dunno about 6-5 but 6-4 is possible, and I'm convinced that one of our black suits is in bad shape, so I like 4♦, and let partner guess as to what to do ;P At least if he's 6-4 he has a good hand, and if he IS 6-5 we have a 10 card fit.
  9. Worst game since AUGUST 2008 (2 years!!!): 46.56% ... goddammit
  10. Then South has 6 spades  I don't know if a club switch is needed unless partner has the K. Maybe E could be 2533, so xx, AKJxx, AKx, Q10x
  11. Also a hand like xxx, AKJx, AK10, Q10x would also require a club switch. Maybe that's not a X though, even if it does have 4 hearts.
  12. You can chat to kibitzers, which will do the job, right?
  13. No real idea, but lead trumps against grands? Probably need to lead something to break communications, but I don't know which minor it is :/
  14. Once the play starts you can see each card as it is played, so the use of screens doesn't obfuscate partner's tempo. If South plays a fast ♠2 when he has a singleton club and a slow ♠2 when he doesn't, that conveys UI. The UI constrains North's actions. That applies with screens or without, and it applies both in the Spingold final and at your local club. E-W play a club system so E's X didn't promise hearts, I don't think. Only semi-positive values. So if North (hypothetically speaking) figured out declarer was exactly 2434 and knew that a switch elsewhere wouldn't give away the contract, then is he no longer obligated to switch to a club here? Or is it still required? Sorry if this seems obvious to a lot of people, this isn't something I think I've ever encountered (or if I have the problem didn't occur to me at the time) so I'm just trying to make sure I understand it.
  15. Easy pass cause either we're already way ahead (3NT or 5m is the right contract) or we're in the same place as everyone else and we're better at defense.
  16. http://www.bridgebase.com/tools/handviewer...ch.php?id=14893 and hand #47 in the open room for the reference point here. I was watching this last night where both tables reached 5♥, but it got through in the open room by an "ethical misdefense," so to speak. Larry Cohen was commentating and argued that after South played a SLOW ♠2 (suit preference) to trick 1, North HAD to ethically switch to the ♣A and another club, because any other play would seem unethical due to the hesitation. Of course this is what happened and the contract was let through. Was LC just playing favorites since his ex-partner was sitting E/W or is this actually nearly required? It would seem to me that any action taken at trick 1 should be allowed to take as little or as much time as needed without reprecussions, but then again I've never even played bridge behind screens before, let alone at the level of the match in discussion. Not to mention it's completely unclear to me to reason out that the club switch is wrong on the auction. I think I could get the North play to trick 1 right, but that's about as far as I go :(
  17. Yeah, I think this is just ELC, especially since the 1NT bidder tends to have length in the minors. That having been said, I don't understand spades then. Might be nice to have a bid here that asks you to pick your longer major (though I would think that would be 2♣).
  18. My suit is too good for 2♦ so it's 1 or 3.
  19. 1. [hv=d=n&v=n&s=sq9hqj53dakqjca82]133|100|Scoring: MP P-(P)-1♦-(2♣) P-(P)-?[/hv] P, X, 2♥, or 2NT? 2. [hv=d=n&v=n&s=sq9hqj53dakqjca82]133|100|Scoring: MP P-(P)-1♦-(2♣) P-(P)-?[/hv] 2♣ was Michaels. Sorry if you don't agree :) a ) what is 2NT by partner? b ) what does X mean by you here? c ) what is your bid? 3. [hv=d=n&v=n&s=sq9hqj53dakqjca82]133|100|Scoring: MP P-(P)-1♦-(2♣) P-(P)-?[/hv]
  20. I personally love the splinter so long as this is the kind of hand it promises. With a bunch of outside junk responder could just raise to 3♠ and wait. When opener has a big unlimited hand, a splinter showing basically that feature and nothing else suits me perfectly. I would bid 4♥ on xxxx, x, xxxx, xxxx with up to a random Q somewhere since I think that's a much more common hand then having 3 or 4 lesser honors outside. That still leaves it to North's judgment and some luck here though, since say, Q10xx, -, xxxx, xxxxx, as JLOGIC said, is much better.
  21. Ya okay, the auction at our table went: 1NT-P-2H-P P-2S-X-P 3H-AP but it should have instead gone 1NT-P-2H-AP if they never bid after a NT opening.
  22. Good thing N read 4♥ as a splinter so that he can ruff his heart losers! ... wait (In all seriousness, if 4♥ tends to not show much in the minors then North knows to sign off since he likely has no way of getting rid of all 3 of his minor suit losers. Then again, something good could have happened, like some minor diamond honors or a 5th spade so I think there's at least a little bad luck involved)
  23. This hand was a really tough one. We got to a decent spot (4♠) on this auction: 1♠-2♣ 2♠-3♦ 3NT-4♠ I decided that since partner couldn't bid hearts or raise a minor he had to have 6 spades and with the marked heart lead 3NT wouldn't be a good contract. Did anyone else have the same first 4 bids, and what did you do after that if you got to the ♦ slam?
