Went down over the weekend. Managed to get an autograph, and watched the exciting finale to the Round Robin. Well done to the Dutch for their organisation!

Unethical Defense to 1NT

Named after the country or Marvin? -
Did West have any other methods to show a strong single-suited major hand? What would X first then bidding a suit show?

BAM strategy?
Rossoneri replied to jillybean's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I agree, on most boards, it doesn't really make much of a difference. -
By David Bird, Master Point Press David Bird is a familiar figure in the bridge literature world. This book divides up endplays into different themes, and these are dealt with in individual chapters. Each chapter first goes through the technique, gives some examples from high-level play, and then ends off with a short quiz of 4 hands, with answers given after. Bird's style makes for easy reading even for a technical book. I personally like the way the book is structured, and the quizzes are short enough to keep most readers' attention, yet sufficient for one to test his/her understanding. The book should be suitable for intermediates up, even advanced players will find some of the later chapters helpful, and the earlier chapters a good revision of the basics. Rating: A

I forgot to add, you've got 2 USA 1's as well.

You've got Denmark twice in the Seniors Bowl, might want to change that!

It's that time of the year again. Following the good work of Paul and Gerben in previous years, here is this year's edition. (I've not seen anyone else starting the thread for this year's if there is, apologies!) Information about teams, draws can be found at http://www.ecatsbridge.com/Events/wbf/2011netherlands/default.asp As per the previous years: BERMUDA BOWL 4 losing quarter-finalists (3 points each) 2 losing semifinalists (6 points each) Runner-up (12 points) The winner (24 points) VENICE CUP 4 losing quarter-finalists (3 points each) 2 losing semifinalists (6 points each) Runner-up (12 points) The winner (24 points) SENIORS BOWL 4 losing quarter-finalists (2 points each) 2 losing semifinalists (4 points each) Runner-up (8 points) The winner (16 points) for a maximum of 160 points. Entry Deadline: 2359 UTC, Friday 30 September 2011 Each entry should contain 8 teams for each of the three competitions, namely the four losing quarter-finalists, two losing semifinalists, runner up and winners. You can only have a single entry, but you may change your choice at any time before the entry deadline. Each team will score the minimum of your placing for them and their final position, for example: if you pick a team as a losing quarter-finalist but they win the competition, then you get the points for a losing quarter-finalist if you pick a team as the winner but they lose in the final, then you get the points for the runner-up. Entries will be accepted in this thread, through PM or comments on my blog. 'Anonymous' entries will be rejected. All accepted entries will published on Google Docs. First Prize wins...er...bragging rights for the next 2 years :P Good luck!

Defining Doubles - I
Rossoneri replied to Phil's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Agree that it should be penalty. -
I do not see any reason why the 2NT call should be alert, neither do I see any UI being transmitted. Result stands.

What actually happened at the table: I bid 3♥ and this was raised to game by partner. The ♣A was led and dummy was: [hv=pc=n&s=sq86hj96da75c9752&n=sak94hakqdjt842cq&d=s&v=b&b=7&a=p3cdp3hp4hppp]266|200[/hv] West continued with the K, and I ruffed in dummy. J♦ led to the Q, A and 9. Now a second diamond to East's K, West following. East thought for a moment, and she eventually returned a ♥. Trumps broke 4-3, so I drew trumps and played off the established ♦, East could ruff in anytime she wished, but her hand only had ♠s left so I made my contract losing a trick each in ♦ and ♣ and a ♦ ruffed by East's fourth trump. Whew!

[hv=pc=n&s=sq86hj96da75c9752&d=s&v=b&b=7&a=p3cdp]133|200[/hv] Matchpoints. Your call.

I may be wrong, but until the correction period is over, the score should be adjusted to reflect the correct claim.

Bidding Sequence
Rossoneri replied to Toradin's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Game is not that likely but not completely out of the picture. 3♣ is more of I've got 3 card support pard, hope that helps your decision. X in this position is still interesting though. -
Bidding Sequence
Rossoneri replied to Toradin's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Agree with the bidding. There was a chance to X on the previous round, so I think X here should be penalty-oriented? 3♣ sounds like an option at this colours. -
You really want to know? Ok, 3 of them did.
-
Agreed, I can't quite see how this should not be changed to +400 unless S only noticed after the correction period is over.
-
I wasn't entirely convinced there was, but my colleagues thought so. I should also add that East told me yesterday that he thinks that they would have still ended up in 3SX either way.
-
Quite right. The ruling was made under the mistaken premise that NS had some agreement on the 2NT bid, but in light of the fact that they did not, that there was no meta-agreement as well, I have overturned my original ruling. (This is more of an FYI to everyone here, the concerned parties are well aware of this already.)

Ideally yes, but in a club game where there are playing directors there are usually practical limitations.
