I always set my cell phone on vibrate and several times I've felt it's vibrating when it is not.

Grasshopper - plan the play.
Hanoi5 replied to jillybean's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Nice extra detail by Inquiry. I think nothing can make it better now. -
3NT is a very bad bid. 1NT was already a bad bid. I should know 'cause I use to make them a lot. As long as you continue to play against this kind of opponents and getting these results you will continue to make the same mistakes.

Is this a forcing pass situation?
Hanoi5 replied to diana_eva's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I think you should have doubled. Your partner's 4♠ bid is a gambling bid, your redouble was also gambling, You wanted to get scientific at the last round of bidding. Did it go down 2 or 3? Edit: just clicked next, down 3. -
KQ were tight offside. I thought double-finessing twice was better, but maybe the double and lho sacrificing should push declarer towards Ace and another? I told North the redouble was 'creative'. I recommended showing a limit support via 2NT, but the hand looks like a mixed raise, doesn't it? How can that be shown?

-
Not tufting the first trick in dummy is quite a bad play (to say the least). The small trump in dummy doesn't have any other purpose and keeping the club ace is important if you get overruffed and in some other occasions.
-
70% to East. Why 1NT on a 5422? Why 3♣? And finally, why not 3NT over 3♠?
-
It's quite difficult, IMO. If partner has 3 aces we're probably looking at a slam, but what did RHO bid on? I might pass at this vulnerability, but if colors were reversed doubling or 5♥ are big possibilities.

It used to mean 72 boards here, but we're getting older and more scared.

Cardio exercises are very good, but it's not something you have to try at the playing site. You just have to start doing it every day and keep doing it at the playing site. When your body gets used to the exercise (I believe in about a month of doing it everyday) your stamina will be higher everytime you exercise. Food, of course, is important as you mentioned. Eating 'light' is a good idea, but also not drinking too much alcohol. Do you do siestas? Maybe you're missing things you're used to, you have to check on this, what if you have a pair playing (or you yourself play) during the time of day when they should be sleeping? Or maybe you just stay in the lobby or playing site discussing results when your body is telling you to get the rest you usually get at that time of the day... As it was also mentioned you have to let go of the boards played. Yes, putting up a hand or two on the forums is nice, but if you go over every result/detail at the playing site it takes 'mana', energy, resources from you. Finally, the amount of boards. What about playing teams/rubber matches AFTER tournaments in Spain? In Venezuela we do bridge 'marathons' three times a year, where 48 boards (two sessions) are played. The fact that you don't have it now doesn't mean that you can't create it.

Partner held: ♠Axx ♥xxx ♦JTxxx ♣Ax They have 8 tricks in spades, we have 9 in diamonds. I passed, but I wanted to check how bad it was with the spade singleton.

Although this app is in the Amazon app market I still canot download it for geographical reasons. Is there any way to be able to download the .app or .apk without going through one of the markets? Is the plan to have all fuctions available? Will I be able to bid hands with a partner? Has BB thought of having a BridgeMaster app?

Sorry, West did double.

12 tricks in Dublin
Hanoi5 replied to bidule5's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Wow! The first bridge book I read claimed 26 points were needed for a game. Here 26 HCP (and two voids) got most of the field to six! -

South will show a limit hand and get to game eventually. Or he might just get to game over your overcall. What would you do in each case?

if you want to see something really unnusual
Hanoi5 replied to Fluffy's topic in Interesting Bridge Hands
I'd pass. Trying to look like a guy who doesn't want to double. Maybe I should double 5 spades for the lead. -
High spade from the table, small one towards the Ace and a club up.

"you have no clue..."
Hanoi5 replied to jillybean's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Hi, welcome to the forum. -
I think the reason to pass (I'm not sure I would have followed that road myself) is: ♠Axx ♥Axx ♦AKQxxx ♣X (1♦)-??? We're in the same predicament, sort of. The difference is that diamonds are more likely to be a suit and 2♦ is not natural in most systems but I guess the essence is the same.

System Competence?
Hanoi5 replied to kenrexford's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Rules? I don't think there are rules. Probably common sense should push people towards changing the system or keeping it and studying it more. Maybe the Director could have a private talk with a pair telling the to either stop messing up or change the system or stop playing together, but there's nothing written about it in the laws that I know of.
