  1. At all white I'd bid 2♣ for sure. No strong opinion here.
  2. see the OP, replacing instances of "3m" with pass those are the cases i am curious about
  3. ....because if we can't show both at the 4-level then we might as well fail to bid one at the 3-level....
  4. Curious what this "field" would do on these cards in various auctions: x K AQxxx Kxxxxx all red MPs, RHO deals 1. (2♠)-? 2. (2♠)-3m-(3♠)-p-(p)-? 3. (2♠)-3m-(4♠)-p-(p)-? 4. (2♠)-3m-(3♠)-p-(4♠)-?
  5. Uh....lol There are so many replies I want to make, but since Justin already replied in a much nicer way than I would have, I'll just say how much your post made me think of this. http://proxy.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?...=simmons/021107 I give you a solid 98. Later Edit: No...No!!! Was Ken your world class partner?? http://forums.bridgebase.com/index.php?sho...=0entry116958 Ok you get a 100, no doubts about it! Yeah I agree that the UCR of this thread is pretty high.
  6. I would double then bid 3♠. I don't think I am good enough for a forcing 3♠ bid, and I am worried about partner passing (if I pass) when there is a double partscore swing. Partner is not very likely to pass the double for penalties, nor I am totally displeased if he does.
  7. Huh. You play that as ELC and not a powerhouse? Is that standard? You're confusing this auction with a double when the opps have opened the bidding. When you make a negative double you are denying the ability to bid directly, which is forcing. In 1♦-(3♣) a negative double may show a good hand with 4 card major(s) (since a direct bid would show 5) or a not-so-good hand like this one with a long major (since bidding directly is forcing and shows a good hand). The same applies to negative doubles at low levels. 1♦-(1♠)-X shows either 4 hearts with any strength (since 2♥ would show 5) or it could also be a bunch (5+) hearts with a bad hand (since 2♥ is forcing and shows a good hand).
  8. where did this come from? Didn't you say you played in the GNT's recently? yeah, a lot of people play in GNTs around this time of year though
  9. ♣A sounds good. Hoping to find partner with a singleton club and two other tricks. When partner surprises you by doubling (and I am surprised here since he couldn't move over 2♣ and the opps voluntarily bid 3♦) he usually has a singleton in your suit.
  10. ....because declarer can't beat your hearts unless he trumps them......

    Lead

I can't remember the last time I failed to lead a singleton against a game when I wasn't holding natural trump tricks.
  12. Double, then 4♥. It's very unlikely that partner will pass the double.
  13. If you bid 3NT you will get a diamond lead from LHO who made a takeout double of 1♣.
  14. Pass. 3NT looks like a fishing expedition.
  15. http://bridgeresults.blogspot.com/ For your entertainment. Hopefully the writing isn't too dull. For most of these I didn't have hand records.
  16. pull, duh that hand is better than the OP's and shorter in spades, so is an obvious 3 or 4h
  17. 3. Kxx Ax xx KJxxxx. Clubs are 3-1 and hearts are 4-2. How many tricks are you taking on defense? I know a reasonable number of people share my view about IMP partscore doubles. Note that partner can have the sQ too and they might still make it on normal breaks. Partner can have some other worse-for-defense shapes too where he might not bid 3♣ over 2♦ for various reasons, or things might break worse than normal. I even think folding this hand is not that far out in left field. I suppose the theme for the other two is that your assumptions about what bids might mean in these auctions seem a little different than mine. KQJ10x -- AKQxxx Ax (KQ) looks like a 5♠ bid to me, and 6♣ looks like it shows a trick. On the diamond hand I may technically be in the wrong about the requiredness of a 5♣ cue, but IMO the number of hands like you suggest (partner needs a second round club control and can't figure out whether I have one even though I opened) is smaller than the number of hands where my hand just doesn't provide enough for slam or the "solid" diamonds break badly.
  18. 5♥. Nothing else makes any sense to me.
  19. I think 3NT was a terrible bid. I'd have bid 3♠. North should know exactly what will happen to 3NT (they blow your stopper then opening bidder gets in with his entry)
  20. 1. Yes I agree with 3♠. I have the death holding in hearts and jump overcalls are NOT the same as preemptive openings at these colors. Lead a club. 2. 3♠ if partner is really WC. This should show a spade stopper and not promise heart support.
  21. 3♥ At unfavorable I would open 2♥.
