3♣, we could have reasonable play for slam opposite a balanced hand weaker than partner's minimum, therefore we have to try opposite partner's actual range.
-
I don't like North's final call. I'm not crazy about the forcing pass either, but I mind it much less than North's 6♦ bid. 80-20 maybe?

short club/diamond

In a Precision (0+) context: I play 1♦-(1M)-2m as 5+ nonforcing. It's nice to have a way to bid limited hands with a 5+card minor and without 4 in the other major. Note that 2♦ is no different than 2♣, it isn't a "raise" I also play 1♦-(1M)-3♣ as a less-than-inv xx45+ hand. It's a hand that would make a weak or constructive jump raise of whatever minor partner would have opened in Standard. 1♦-(1M)-2M is therefore a nebulous inv+ bid. It means you couldn't bid 2NT/3NT and also couldn't double or bid the other major. Haven't had any problems with this sequence. -
What was the other hand? there's a thread in "interesting bridge hands" by the same name x J ATxxx AKJxxx
-
My point was that we've already shown extras because we didn't bid 3NT over 3♦ and we cuebid twice. I think it's a minimum hand given the context. If I was given this and the companion hand as an ATB problem I would have put 100% blame on partner.
-
You shouldn't post the companion hand as well at the same time if you want unbiased responses. I'll say what I said in that thread -- partner has cuebid twice when he could have bid notrump, therefore he has a good hand. That makes this hand worth RKC over 4♥, without a doubt (I actually would have bid RKC over 3♠)
-
I'd bid 5♦. I've already cuebid twice (admittedly in an unusual order) when I could have bid notrump at some point, so partner knows I have extras and the major aces. I don't want to get to a slam off the ♦AK if partner has something like xx Kx T9xx AKQJx
-
i vote pass also - if partner can't balance then we probably don't belong in the auction
-
Maybe the hardest bidding problem I have had ...
Apollo81 replied to Cascade's topic in Expert-Class Bridge
What if partner picks SIX SPADES? KQ9765432, xx, K, x Me, when I have no realistic solution I simply try to go plus - I bid 6C. You can always correct to 7♣. I agree with trying to go plus in principle, but it's just too likely partner has the ♦K here imo..... -
I'll accept the presumed invitation (I don't think it's very close). If partner intended it as a preempt then my hand is also fine for a continuation of the preempt. Also I would have bid 3♣ at my previous turn.

Responding to a Balancing DBL
Apollo81 replied to jmcw's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I have to say I would bid 4♥ at the table. Maybe it is a bad bid, but I bet game is cold on a number of hands where partner would pass a 3♥ bid. -
agree, I prefer 1N with such bad diamonds
-
I'd just overcall 1♥. Hopefully partner can raise to a high level, and LHO will be in for a surprise if he leads clubs! I suspect this is from the Diamond vs Nickell match going on today, but I haven't looked.
-
3♦. Not really an underbid since partner's a passed hand, LHO isn't, and we're red on white.
-
I would just bid 3NT. If my range was 15-17 then I could be talked into a NF 3♦ bid.
-
Pass, but I would double if one of my clubs was a spade.
-
The Law supports a pass. There are 16-17 total tricks.

I don't think the ♠J is so obvious a lead here. It blows a trick if declarer has AQT, and is extremely likely to blow one if partner has AQxxx and declarer has KTx. Furthermore, there's the possibility of what happened on the actual deal. Now I'm not saying I wouldn't have led the ♠J (guess we'll never know since this wasn't posted as a problem), but at least consider that perhaps it might be better to lead something that the notrumper isn't prepared for.

How many eternal ones?

If opener's pass shows spades, then I would bid 3♠. -
Doubling partner...
Apollo81 replied to Hanoi5's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Partner has certainly made at least one penalty double and we have a king and 2 trumps more than we promised. That makes it a clear pass in my book. -
To Balance or not to Balance
Apollo81 replied to jmcw's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I would double and would not have even considered any other action. -
There is almost 0 chance that they will compete 4 over 3 on this hand. The most likely results if you bid 3♠ are: - no one can make anything at the 3-level - one side can make 8 tricks and the other side can make 9 tricks

Correct Correct

http://online.bridgebase.com/myhands/index.php Now that I've looked it up, your partner should have bid 3♥ over 2♥ showing a limit raise or better. At the very least he should have doubled 5♥.
