3C. I dont mind a heavy 2C from time to time but here we have 6 controls and KQT9 of clubs that is more than enough to compensate for the stiff S ace and so-so hearts.
-
I mainly think they are resulting big time. I think the same for those that overcall 1Nt at Imps.
-
This was already discussed, and for me its an obvious 2H. Switch the major around and ill still bid 2S (unless we play that 1S is forcing) I dont care about any argument about made up suit or disturbing the shape you can take a time machine to a long gone era and see that JS and reverse can be done on 2 card fragment. 1D-----1S 2H here 2H is your cheapest forcing bid so its an efficient way to show the strong 3 card raise hand & strong hand without a club stopper. Also sooner or later its going to be fun to be able to show the stiff in clubs wich a artificial 2Nt or a super phony 3C will never be able to do. http://forums.bridgebase.com/index.php?sho...20jumshift&st=0

No its not my decision its in the initial post. Its also common sense that you try to legalize something in the midchart before even thinking in the GCC. For the rest of your post there is no argument as why a director will bug you about an opening bid wich require no new defense and that is 95% similar to an already allowed conventions. My experience tell me opponents and directors will let it slide the same way a policeman will allow some speeding. If you say that driving 2MPH over the speed limit is illegal there is nothing to say against it, but anybody who think that way should deserve that every car in front of him run 5MPH under the speeding limit for a couple of months . After that theyll notice that there is a difference between laws and real life. He also deserve that his accountant declare every revenues for the income tax.

Those who think theyll reached game here are just resulting or playing the bad cop. They psyched and it worked end of story. If your not able to stand that your going to get robbed from time to time then you have a big problem.
-
First of all we are talking midchart. 2ndly read http://web2.acbl.org/defensedatabase/2g.htm and please enlight me in telling what is the crucial difference between 5H +4/5m vs 5H+5os. Note that the suggested defense for 2H as showing both major include that 2S should be natural. http://web2.acbl.org/defensedatabase/2c.htm Anyway i would be F%$# ashamed of myself (and you should be too) if id call the director to complain that the 2H bidder may also have a 5 card spades suit. Get real, its not like you are willingly strecthing the rule to get an unfair advantage.
-
Dont worry about it, print the defense for the Dutch 2s and no director will bug you on this. As long as the suit bid is natural or that it cannot be an unknown suit you are ok.
-
I think its a close call, and i can live with both 5H and pass. I think 5 seconds is a normal tempo for an unusual bidding sequence. IMO bidding in tempo include some leeway for tough and unusual bidding wich is clearly the case here, bidding 5 over 4 or X or not decision are always tricky. The sad fact here is that the slow double clearly suggest pulling and if everybody agree there was a tempo break then you have no choice to put 4Sx making.
-
Making a negative double is also possible.

I have a hard times understanding why people are willing to play 1D as super nebulous to make sure their 2C have 6 clubs. I know its allow them to have an extra Nt range but still....
-
Its a quirk but here it is. MP red vs White. Kxx Kxxxx Ax Kxx VS x AJx KQJxxx xxx 1H-----(pass)------2D-----(2S) pass---(3S)--------4H-----(4S) X You were red vs W. 4Sx making 4 and 5Hx (however im not sure how they manage to X) down 2/3 were bad but fairly common results, -420 is a pretty good score for NS. West didnt have a hand good enough to overcall 3S so if a sleepy south made just a limit raise 3H/4H would have won the jackpot. This is thinking in a box, the big picture is the score you expect if it goes. 1H------3H (good limit) ??????? VS the score you expect if it goes 1H------2C (GF) ????? Its like opening 1M with a hand strong enough to open 2C, you expect that even if stopping short of game might be dreadful the upside of opening 1M vs the downside of opening 2C are compensating.

4D, WTP. If partner hold 2 or 3 of the magic cards we will the good slam. Holding only 1 of slam is marginal.
-
2S, except 3rd seat FAV (ill open 3S) If you open 2S R/W its because you are clueless about vulnerability.
-
Because you will show a 3 card raise with strenght in S and shortness in clubs. What more do you want ?
-
I dont make offshape double, or crappy overcall and we are sound in balancing seat and still we dont miss a lot of game. We are sometimes out of the bidding in partscore battles but the upside of lead directing & penalty doubles compensate for most of the missed games/partscore. Even if we give a hand strong enough where everybody agree that its strong enough to take action, people would be surprised of how small the equity difference is between passing vs bidding. Passing is a very underrated bid. Imo its a psychological glitch that biased people toward acting instead of not acting. That is why poker pro are able to make a living.
-
easy pass. If you are not good enough to suggest a 4S save by bidding 3S the round earlier you are surely not strong enough to hope to make 3S.
-
Even if 2S is forcing this is a near perfect hand to double
-
If LHO has already passed I agree that its not likely they ll reach 4S and i would bid 2C. But LHO hasnt bid yet. If Im showing a good limit raise and partner pass then its quite likely LHO has a hand to overcall 2S anyway. If the hand is a double fit than the chance they reach 4S seems pretty high if i respond 2C and if the hand isnt a double fit than my hand is probably just worth a good limit raise. You are naive thinking that 4Sx isnt a good possibility here, where i live opps are quick to get the S in and they are quick to bid 4S over 4H. I think the chance that 2C backfire is greater than the chance that 3H goes all pass and we make 4 or the chance that 2C will lead to a good slam that is unbidable after a 3H response. I agree 3H is a small underbid, but 2C as a fair chance of inconvience too.
-
Quantitative doesnt really make no sense because partner hand may be unbalanced and wide-ranging. So by default its RKC.

What i dont like about precision and my solution to it. 1C for 16+, lead that you dont open 1C often enough. (I strongly suggest to play 15+) 1D-- That show only 2. (You can play that 1D show 4 and is unbalanced and im pretty sure its the way to go) The 15-21 pts hands with D. I find that it akward to open those 1C. (I open them 1D, IMO much better to have 1D as 11-21 than 11-15) the 18-19 balanced hand. (I open 1 club and rebid 2D to show this balanced hand, partner will be able to signoff in 2D,2S,3C wich is a lot better than if i rebid 2Nt.) The 2D opening. I think roman is a lot inferior to the weak 2s. (the 4414 hand is opened 1H,1S or 1Nt depending on the quality of the suits.) The 5C+4M hands (My solution to this is that the old school responses are obsolete. With a proper structures of responses 2C isnt a big problem.) Opponents interferring over 1C. (We open 1C with GF hands or 15-17 with a 5M or 16+ clubs or balanced, so that 18-22 with 5M we open them 1M.) This lead to less problem for intervention, but the cost is no LOB. NT range (we play wide ranging Nt with structure that is geared for invitationnal hands. White we play 10-14 and 1C-1Nt is 15-18, 1C-2D is 19-20 ,1C--2H is 21-22 etc. Red its 12-15/16-19/20-21/22-23 etc.
-
I dont really like 2C because it might lead partner to double 4S. 4Sx+1 would not surprise me on this deal. I think i like the direct 3H bid. If it goes all pass, than maybe 3H +1,+2 is better than 4S going down.
-
1D-----1H 3H-----4C 4D-----4H 4S-----6H 3H is of course correct. 15 pts and a void is nice but its not enough to force to game. 4C show a C but denies a S controls so... here we have 2 style. Denials With a dead minimum hand or without S control we bid 4H. With non minimum but lacking a D control we bid 4D With both D and S control we KC or bid 4S+. 2nd style With a minimum but with a D and a S control we would 4D. With a minimum without a D control or any hand without S control we bid 4H. With a max but without a D control we bid 4S. With both control and a max we kc or bid at the 5 level. In both style 4D and pulling over 4H can be used for exclusion.
-
Agree 100% overcalling is pointless. Change the vul and i still think 1H is pointless but now 2H is a possibility.
-
Maybe im wrong but if you dont play good bad then 3D is forcing but not game forcing. 3D can be 15 pts and 5-5 if so maybe 3S/4D arent forcing. Maybe some do play that 3D isnt forcing in wich case im not sure what is forcing and want isnt. Anyaway over the board im pretty sure i would have bid 3H.

Defence to Precision 1D
benlessard replied to thebiker's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
12-15 doesnt seem enough for wanting to get in. I would play 14-16 for a balanced X
