  1. this is a totaly different auction because here you have to agree if you play splinters or fit-jumps! so pd could either forget about your agreement or don't know it (or you forget/don't know) for me this is like comparing 1NT-2♣ where 2cl is stayman and nobody forgets it to 1♠-2♣ and asking "could he have forgotten, that 2♣ is stayman?"
  3. yeah, love this. some days ago i have tried to make an excel sheet with all possible auctions that look like: (1x) - ? 1x - (something non pass) - ? (1x) - something, maybe pass - (something mb pass) - ? 1x - (something, mb pass) - something mb pass - (something, but no pass if pd passed) - ? all somethings were limited to 2NT and I found more than 1700 possible auctions. This one is even one level more, so I have to add those for my "partnership-understanding-in-competitive-bidding-test"
  4. May 12th to 16th we will have the 1st German Bridge Trophy in Bonn there are 4 tournaments: Invitational Teams (Open/Ladies) 12th-13th OPEN Pairs Tournament 13th OPEN Teams Tournament 14th-16th German Bridge Federation is happy to see lots very good players already in the list of participans (Team Lavazza, Team Gromov, Team Bessis and many others) There will be prices for many teams, 1st will be 5000€. Teams will be devided into several groups after the first rounds, so even weaker teams can win money in their group! But we are a little bit disappointed about the lack of entries of more teams, especially from our neighbour countries Netherlands, France and Poland etc. So if you are looking for a very good tournament in Central Europe, check out: http://www.german-bridge-trophy.de/ I would be happy to see some BBF'ers here!
  5. ich würde in einem deutschen Turnier und bei BBO alles alertieren, in einem internationalen F2F turnier nicht
  6. it depends, every federation has other rules how to pick their team, some run open trials open for everybody, some have some trials to creat a pool of candidates and pick 3 of them, some create a pool of players and play trials to get the 3 best and some just pick 3 pairs and send them... Often this way will be change in a federation from way A to B when the team selected via A was not successfull. When Italy this year will not gain a BB spot, lots of italians will ask "did Mrs. Lavazza really pick the best" and maybe we will see some Italian trials again. Then again Poland did not play that well in the last Championships. Their best pair, for several reasons, did not participate in the trials and they have started just selecting the team this time.
  7. pd's defense looks strange, leading away from kx into a j9xx suit... this is not his work, its opps work. Would have expected him to switch to dia and wait for a club and a spade trick... anyway showing count and then suipt pref in trumps would have even worked with this partner
  8. why should this be a eng/disc situation, all honors in this suit are clear to every player at the table including the dummy. Partner is not on lead anymore, if he ever gains the lead, he will have another singnal from me, this will be a suit preference. Then he will have the full count, because I give him the count singal and see that I have something in dias other than hearts. If I play the 8, pd will misjudge the whole layout by one card. Since he should have the Cl 10 as well for his defense, I won't think, that he will try to give me a ruff on a natural trick. At some point he will switch to dias anyway but I want to show him now how to handle the club suit, once he regains the lead, leads a dia to me and I return a club
  9. I play polish club with 2/1 and forcing NT and am happy about this. Also use Gazilli with most partners allowing 1M-1NT-3x to show 5-5 and beeing non forcing. There are enough hands in polish club that open 1M and are GF ip partner finds a constructive bid, so having a way to show strength fast is still nice in Polish club. Opener rebidding 2 clubs on 5332 after 1S-1NT also fits well into ploish bidding style to bid Clubs when no other bid is available => 2D/H shows 4+
  10. I heard, that they will add another pair, either Kwiecien-Jagniewski or Kalita-Kotorowicz but not sure about that
  11. Ole BERSET (Norway) player Boye BROGELAND (Norway) player Thomas CHARLSEN (Norway) player Bjorn Olav EKREN (Norway) player Thor Erik HOFTANISKA (Norway) player Odin SVENDSEN (Norway) player Christian WENNEROD (Norway) non-playing captain Kjell Gaute FYRUN (Norway) coach Can somebody explain me how this comes? Helgemo, Helness and other members of the teams that won WC and EC in recent years missing? --- Norberto BOCCHI (Italy) player Giorgio DUBOIN (Italy) player Lorenzo LAURIA (Italy) player Antonio SEMENTA (Italy) player Alfredo VERSACE (Italy) player Maria Teresa LAVAZZA (Italy) non-playing captain Massimo ORTENSI (Italy) coach playing as a team of 5 and dropping Nunes Fantoni again? If I remember correctly last time N-F were out, they nearly missed the Bermuda Bowl spots Anyway Italy will be a strong team this year, while I cant be sure about Norway... Sweden will have Fredin-Fallenius playing and Poland Balicki-Zmudzinski, thats some better news for the fans.
  12. I am missing a picture of [add your favorite player] that appears if you misplay an easy contract
  13. this seems to be an all-dad-fact B)
  14. how did you manage this? pls tell me
  15. my pd already accepted a gametry by not passing 1h - so i try the game now but investigate a spade fit before if he really can have 4 spades and 3 hearts - else i just bid 4h
  16. I think this hand is worth an ivite to 3♠ because most factors, that will pd make NOT bid game as: -4spades only -bad spades -not enough aces ... will make game go down, so this is one of those situations, where pd can make an usefull judgement and we don't need to throw the imps for bidding unmakable games but in general I agree to the main consens, that you should bash more often. say you have: Kxx xx xxx KQxxx and invite after 1nt, how will partner know, that 15 with Axx in in clubs is woth more than 17 with xx only? so he will not judge well and we strand in "bad" 2nt too often
  17. I just read an interview with Magnus Carlsen in a German magazine after beeing shocked, that a 19 year old boy is #1 in chess this year... translated: the skill level of me and Kasparov is relatvely equal, he is better in analysing variants and I have a better intution. later he told that his cooperation with Kasparov helped him a lot but now it is time to work more on his own, he doesnt need Kasparov's help so much anymore... so probably in chess its also not correct to say, that older stars are equal to modern stars? and Kasparov is not that old, while we cen expect this young Norwegian to improve...
  18. I would think that in football the players improved a lot, they run more, play more effective, shoot harder and more precisely. These days I see lots of goals from 20meters+, Robben seems to score one each week, can remember this back in the 90's (am too young to say about earlier) When I see historic matches from before, like 70's I nearly fall asleep by the low tempo in the game, watching Messi is like watching an other game. Goalkeepers nowadays need to be able to play as well because they are implemented by their team and defenders are much beeter football players now than before i would say.
  19. have to disappoint you: Meck-Rodwell are European Champions! (Menton 2003) ;) but they will not play open pairs together in Philly
  20. it was in EC 2004 and place 10 was the aim for the team to be allowed to play in olypiad in Istanbul again. 10 was relatively OK for Germany finishing 12-18 before, they made the 8th place, reached KO in Istanbul and since then the results improved from event to event, only small changes were made between the tournaments when one partnership divorced and one pair was replaced by another and finaly by Gromöller-Kirmse The Women team will be: Sabine and Daniela Pony Nehmert playing with our junior teammate Cristina Giampietro :) and Barbara Hackett - Annaig della Monata, who did well in the previous events. they have ben selected by the NPC who runs several online and f2f trainings regulary
  21. why didnt I resond 1 spade in my first round of bidding? we had this in another trhead. parter will raise this with a decent hand then I will raise to game, and with stronger ones we can explore the right game one level lower
  22. have same agreement, but there is no doubt, 44 majors you simply bid the bid, that shows 44 majors, stayman or whatever dia fit and values you bid 3Dia in doubt this is pure penalty based on good clubs. Doubler has some 15 points with 4 clubs, his partner ran out of the double with any 4333 and close to 0 points and I have 6 or 7 points with QJTx in clubs and probably a king or an ace in a major. am happy that partner will lead a trump as often as possible and that the hand will have no entry, so dummy will be endplayed all the time. Defense with all points in dummy and knowing pd has the rest will not be too difficult, expect to score plus even when 3nt is making
  23. Maybe it is, but I do not like your reason: If 2 Spade from doubler promises extras, you surely will bid 2 spade on Qxxx Jxxx Kxx Jx,because you know that partner with minimum values has a 4 card fit or at least a real good 31(45)- in both cases it must be right to compete in the pass out seat. I never understood the modern trend of bidding 1 spade with 0-10. I see no upsides but some difficult problems later. Maybe someone can explain the upsides to me? hope I don't take too much of your time... - playing the jump as "could be even 8 points and maybe only 4 cards spades" will also cause trouble, because in competition doubler cant be sure if there is a good fit or only this 4 card fit. Playing jumps real constructive you often assume 5 cards in spades - playing the jump as 4 cards and 8 points makes you need an invitational bid, so with 10 to 11 points and 4 cards or say good 9 and 5 card fit you need either to cuebid or jump to 3 level, this might be too high already - playing the cuebid only inviatational then causes LOTS of problems with forcing hands, after partners response to the cuebid, normaly 2!S you need to find a bit that confirms if you have 4, 5 spades, or if you only cuebided because of your points and maybe have no 4 spades and no real suit at all playing jumps as constructive and often 5 cards you have to bid 1s on many good hands, but as above mentioned, if 1s gets passed out you did not miss a game, else you get a 2nd bid to show your additional strength like a double in later bidding, this is by newer standards of course not penalty the fact with 4 and 5 card fit is more important on T/O doubles after 1m than after 1H, because a T/O X on 1 club more often includes only 3 card support for one specific major than x on 1 hearts that is very often based on 4 spades, so playing the old way, you get to play in 4-3 fits more often after a bidding like 1d - x- p - 2h all pass I think the modern concept of wide ranging responses to TO doubles fits well together with the modern style of doubling (some very light hands and some offshape hands often double) and bidding (your heavy bid rarely gets passed out)
  24. No. In Modern Acol (to the extent there is such a thing): - A 2/1 response does NOT promise a second bid, so that responder can pass after, for example, 1S - 2C - 2S - Playing strong NT, 1S - 2C - 2NT (showing a weak NT) is also not forcing. In old-fashioned Acol, 1S - 2C - 2NT was not forcing even if 2NT showed 15+, but many (although by no means all) Acol players play that as forcing. - However, most good players play opener's change of suit (not a reverse, not at the 3-level) as forcing for one round, so that 1S - 2D - 2H is forcing (for example). Responder can make a number of non-forcing bids over this: 2S shows a minimum 2/1 with no particular fit. Although it usually has a doubleton spade in 5-card major style, it could have a singleton on a very bad day. 2NT is invitational, about a good 10 to a poor 12 3H is invitational, with 4-card support 3D is invitational with a decent 6-card suit, also about 9-12 HCP 3S is invitational with 3-card suport (note in England this is NOT forcing) are you allowed to double your partner then to make a forcing call? or is there some forcing pass tha requires opps to balance and you can bid you good hands? or is there some rule, that responders in ACOL systems ALWAYS have 10 or 11 points? :) just checking my bidding box to see if there is a forcing bid available in that system, where the partnership could have 40 hcp devided in nealy all ways...
