1h-p-2nt, what do SAYC partners actually mean?
Mr. Dodgy replied to MomoTheDog's topic in Natural Bidding Discussion
As I see it, according to the ACBL SAYC booklet, 1M-2NT is a forcing raise. But then, 1m-2NT is 13-15 and almost NO-ONE actually plays it that way (10/11 is far more common). Without making a specific agreement, you're just guessing. I'd probably ASSUME something like 10/11 balanced is the norm. It's wrong, but it's the norm. -
Does this apply to both FD and 'old style' CCs? I think it would have been nice for this new feature to have been somehow advertised, either via the news popup or here on the forums (forgive me if it was, I rarely read the news popup, but I think it would be good to have some easily accessible link, like the help button, to a webpage with a news archive). It confused me when I first encountered it, it will likely perplex others as well. Nevertheless, I like it, now that I know what is going on.

Pass

yep, I've often thought this would be neat, particularly when kibitzing

Whose bidding is worse...

Oh I like this auction (transfer+shortness) very much, I'll be pointing my RL partner at this thread to be sure :( My comment is based up on remarks from other players along the lines of "transfers to minors are only really useful with weak hands". Is it that this sort of slam-invitational hand is the exception, or are there others, or are the aforementioned players completely mistaken?
-
not sure if it's standard (or even a good method), but I agree with ya Wayne, I'd (like to) play responder's rebids here as showing shortness/weakness - so I'd try 3♠ instead of 3♥. Some may disagree with transferring on this hand, but I don't see many other good options.

I thought EKCB only applied if the '5y' bid is a jump (or if 'y' is a suit which opponents have shown), but missed a slam after a misundertanding in this auction recently... (assume 'y' is lower-ranking than 'x' for the purpose of this poll please) Thanks, Justin.

:D Thanks K! http://www.qldbridge.com/titles/display.php?code=grprsd http://www.qldbridge.com/titles/display.php?code=qnovpr The next state title up for grabs is the Individual, on the 16th December - I'll keep you posted here LOL. I'm in a bit of a quandary, actually...I'm increasingly unsure whether I should consider myself 'Intermediate' or 'Advanced'? BBO guidelines state: "Comparable in skill to most other members" is a rather vague term. I doubt that most other members can claim to be the current holder of 2 State titles (even at a 'restricted' level), yet in general I find the tournaments on BBO quite tough. But can I really say that I am "consistently successful in clubs or minor tournaments"? FWIW we also won the C-grade teams title at the Coffs Harbour SuperCongress a few months ago, and one or two other decent results in the last 9 months or so. Please weigh in. Personal impressions of my standard from those who have played with/against me are welcomed.

2♠ even if I was playing Multi :)

I must be sick; If I bid anything it might be 3♠, but then too rich for me. Pass.

I'm sure you do, and I understand BrBr to be a very good product with great capabilities for analysing hand data. I'd love to have it :) I have my own myhands database, and can perform any of the functions I have listed (and more) using it. It's no great achievement, and I'm sure it would not be very difficult to add some small extra filters, etc. into the online version.
-
I believe myhands could be jazzed up in many quite simple ways - sort/filter by scoring, score, partner, contract, declarer, tricks (needed, won, amount over/under), whether we were on defense or offence...

I can make 'notes' on my own profile. Not sure what to use this function for yet. Reminders? stop playing bridge and eat stop watching bridge and sleep stop reading forums and do laundry

The final pass is weak, opener can be expected to have 2+ tricks and South might get 3 or more, can't pass. otoh, I would have been very tempted to open 4♥

Strong Jump Shifts are less common these days but if you're playing them then 2♠ 1st round is good. Now I'd just blast Blackwood or bid 4♣ (if that's nat+strong)
-
I think you are GF'd already. I'd bid 4♠

There is a previous thread discussing this - but I could never get it to work

competitive auction2
Mr. Dodgy replied to jillybean's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
1. 2♠. ditto jlall 2. 2♦ then ?♠s, but I play a kinda funny overcall structure. 3. indeed depends on methods, my preference is Penalty Double.
