  1. That's why it makes sense. When people are starting out at duplicate Bridge they do not understand the difference between the two scoring methods. Expert players like yourself may have forgotten this. But it is a problem for many people. This idea would help people to see that there is a radical difference in the scoring between IMP's and MP's Obviously not a problem for world experts.
  2. RONF it says on the GIB system notes - and it sure is annoying. This hand just came up at Matchpoints here is the bidding and the South hand. for 100% (only 2 other people playing in this tourney) what's your call? The opps and partner are GIB. I wish I was religious. Then I would at least have the comfort of knowing that certain people would end up in a certain place for all the terrible things they've done.
  4. The Forum is full of strange but not really 'hostile' people. Almost nobody that writes here works for BBO, so you sort of take what you can get. Many of the writers fall into the following categories: First-time posters with a question that they first sent to support@bbo and were directed to the Forum, where they expected (wrongly) a sort of help-desk full of BBO employees.Jaded long-time writers who have seen it all before and make snarky remarks but don't mean to hurt your feelings.Tournament Directors annoyed about players.Players annoyed about tournament Directors.Experts annoyed about newbiesNewbies annoyed about ExpertsIntermediates trying to learn about Bridge.People that think that the interface could be improved who are offering suggestions - these are silently logged by a mysterious entity who quietly works on them in a back-room somewhere. Me.Administrators who remove rude comments. Your question would be easier to answer if you provided a little bit more information. Where in the BBO platform are you playing? What system are you using Phone tablet computer, browser etc? It's a bit like going to the Doctor and saying I feel sick give me antibiotics. The Doctor doesn't know where to start. Let's begin again, shall we? What exactly is your problem Bob? Maybe then someone can help.
  5. Brian, You're not the Messiah you're just a .... PS welcome to the Forum Bob
  6. I like trying to be clever so I chose a small ♥. I picked the ♥6 to try and disguise its origin. I have one lousy honour, South doesn't like North's Hearts. If he thinks I have three he might put up the Ace from ATxxx. Leaving one more trick for my partner to find. If we don't get squeezed by the ♣'s.
  7. Very helpful I did mean closer to 'game-going' values 3♦ =4♠ and 10-12 HCP" as implied by the Bergen comment. To account for the title of the thread etc I provided an extreme lower range. 3NT also means choice of game.
  8. Well, thank you. Don't look then. I would like to know. I think it would be interesting, informative and helpful.
  9. Sounds like an open and shut case to me.
  10. Interesting, I have been playing in online ACBL tourneys so this is exactly what I was after.
  11. I prefer the scoring method that gives me the best result: obviously. Since we are in the computer age, is it possible, at the end of a tournament for the results to be reported in both IMP's and MP's - just for interest sake. Clearly not a top priority but if it's not a huge hassle to implement it might be fun.
  12. As someone who spends most (but not all) of their time playing with GIB I can say that before you start messing with its system it's a good idea to understand what it does do inside out. The first thing I did was join Prime so that I could hammer out boards to see how GIB responds. The next thing I did was to see how GIB responds to subtle variations in HCP range and shape. So the system I use with GIB is a bit different to the system in the system notes but it gets me to makeable contracts often. My next problem is making them more often. Some of the things will translate into what is referred to as "real Bridge" by some of the people that make posts here. Many of these people are excellent real-life Bridge players who don't tell us about their experiences with GIB. Although I'm sure they are pretty good at that too.
  13. This is a particular problem for 'concrete' thinkers. Something that there is no shortage of in Bridge and Chess players where everything is often just Black and White - so to speak. The best player in the room can often have great difficulty in understanding nuances. In medical school, interviews were introduced to try to enrol more good students that had 'tolerance of ambiguity' and 'empathy' as well as the ability to solve difficult puzzles. The people that can do the super clever stuff are still in high demand, but they tend to gravitate to areas of medicine where interpersonal skills are less in demand. Horses for courses. Trump is a businessman. He works in real estate. Interpersonal skills are a negative asset in that field. I just read Fear (Woodward's 1st book) the most astonishing part is the shame-faced ease with which Trump lies to fit any required position. Nothing matters at all - just the sale. Hitler had a deeper respect for the people than Trump on that basis.

  15. 1♠ "I have 5 ♠ and 10 - 22 HCP 2♥ "I have 4-7♥ and 4-18 HCP 3 ♦ this where it gets tricky - for some players this could mean BERGEN! "I have 4card ♠ support etc and forgot about the interference thing", or it could mean "I have a lot of ♦". Definitely means "I have >6 HCP" or half a dozen other things. 3 ♥ "I have either no hearts or the Ace of Hearts or whatever, anyway don't worry about hearts. I have a strong hand we're off to the races" pass "well, I put my cards on the table I have 5-6♥ and 8-10 HCP that's it for me" 3NT "up to you" pass "I'm staying out of this" 4♦ "don't like 3NT" pass "make up your mind guys" I'm voting for 4♠ and if it's wrong, North can correct it to 5♦. I would say that most humans are worse than robots.

  17. I have a good memory. There are lots of possible words in many different languages with all kinds of nuances. People are slighted by the slightest things. Not being accepted for a Bridge game is not the same thing as having your offer of marriage rejected. An abundance of politeness is not required. Any word is fine a simple no would suffice IMO. But then it would have to be a question of Nein, nyet, non, etc I'm not being nasty I just think that at a time when there so many things to be concerned about, this one isn't one of them. On a suffering scale of 1-100, how much suffering is being caused by the problem is the metric that I apply. If it's less than 10% I have absolutely no interest. Other people may, out of an excess of empathy view matters differently. I reject that viewpoint. There's an idea, offer a variety of alternative words - how about a short essay, or a pictogram, or a lagniappe?
  18. 1NT 15-17 may contain 5CM:- roughly speaking this was the system I was originally shown, but it's not what GIB uses and there are many others. 2♣ > 8HCP at least 1 4cm 2NT! - transfer to ♦ - at least 6 2♠! - transfer to ♣ - at least 6 And the usual other stuff. The GIB method is a bit different.
  19. So, something very odd happened to me a moment ago. I played in another ACBL tournament and I came in 7th. And I got masterpoints! (can't complain about that). Here's what it said at the end of board 12. "But Mr Wang, wait a minute that makes no sense!" I expostulated. I came in 7th out of 9 people that puts me (swift mental calculation) below the 30th percentile. "That's right", he said. "How did you work that out so quickly - you must be a very stable genius - or something". Or something my internal monologue agreed. I can tell from your name that English isn't your first language. You see he explained, the word rank can have more than one meaning. Oh, I said, a light beginning to dawn. Yes, he said, it can mean rank as in 1st, 2nd or 3rd, or it could mean your score is just rank. I see. Now I understand. English is a funny language.<br style="font-family: arial, verdana, tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">
  20. I'll give you the bidding and lead with North and South. Result hidden below - I messed up and went off 2, working it out afterwards. East passed, I rated my hand as 17 using the Pilowsky calculator. Turns out KR gives it 16.8. So I'm optimistic. I venture into the ring with a delicate 1♣. West astonishes me with 2NT 'unusual etc'. My partner; the bewildering North robot bids 3♣ - "competitive raise" 4+♣ yeah right. East supports West - at least one of the robots is facing in the right direction. I decide to show partner what I'm made of; 3S "5+♣;4+♠; 21-HCP; 19-22 total points" This bid is about 80% true - pretty good. West puts up the white flag. North goes for broke 4NT. 5♥: 100% true. 6♣ by North. And West BANGS down his A♦: can you make it? [hv=pc=n&s=sakt6hq2d5ca98732&n=s42ha73d9874ck654&d=e&v=n&b=2&a=p1c2n3c3h3sp4np5hp6cppdpprppp]399|300[/hv] here's the whole hand
  21. I've started a special thread for these hands: https://www.bridgeba...06#entry1007106 Did you know that sometimes Steve Jobs would man the help desk at Apple and some lucky customer would get a free replacement laptop when they called with a problem? Perhaps BBO has the same deal.
  22. I had the album! Long after I lost the record player. Lehrer is the German word for teacher/educator. Like Art Garfunkel, He was a mathematician - at Harvard - where he fought fiercely and did new math, wearing his lead BVD's - so says Werner von Braun while doing the Vatican rag.
  23. Speaking of squeezes. I just played my regular daily (every other day or so) Challenge against a Star. ...and lost 8 IMP's to 30. A moral victory of sorts, he beat me 3/2 with 3 ties. The brilliancy prize goes to TheOtherGuy for this amazing squeeze against the (not advanced) robots. Here's the link. Watch how an Expert connives to conjure an overtrick out of thin air: a thing of beauty. Only to be watched if stoned. Don't say you weren't warned. ♠10 led. The bidding alone was worth the price of admission compared to what happened at my table.
