Here's what happened

I agree, the problem East always faces is that they don't know what West has. The expectation when they double is that action will follow. If it does not then disaster surely will. My point is that if you are compelling your partner to act then surely you should shoulder the burden yourself, or pass. There is a tide in the affairs of man, taken at the flood, which leads on to greatness. omitted (or passed in this case) leads to a lot of moaning in the pub afterwards. Or at least I think that's how it goes.
-
That was the point of my comment above. since you absolutely can't afford a pass by your partner, then either bid 2♠ which is what GIB does or pass which is what others do. Why does it matter whether or not it's over 2♥ or 1NT? isn't the effect the same? I've started using this approach routinely - it's paying dividends so far. Yes, IRL, as well as with robots.

Further hint. Stepbridge is the biggest Club in Australia now, this is the 1 pm open. There were 22 Tables and it was Swiss. Although I have played with Skillful partner a few times before we haven't yet settled on a system. Amongst the people that play on Stepbridge, there are really good players such as Hugh Grosvenor and Tania Lloyd (maybe as good as Mike!) and then there's me, and even people not as good as me - maybe. Anyway, three people reached the best spot. One person reached the next best spot, one person ran out of time and everyone else reached the wrong spot.

yeah everyone just wants to win! -
After playing IMP's for weeks - BBO and ACBL I headed back to my home Club - Stepbridge in Adelaide and teamed up with my partner who is an extremely tolerant and skilful player. Here's the bidding and my hand with some of the recent discussion about overcalls ringing in your ears what action would you take. You can imagine my surprise when North opened the bidding. NS vul. Matchpoints. [hv=pc=n&e=s754hkqdakcakqjt6&d=n&v=n&b=5&a=1s]133|200[/hv] Edit: My skilled partner was sitting West , the dopey one is me in the East seat!

Opening a weak 2 is as I suggested elsewhere a bit like 1NT upside down where the weak long hand speaks first. The East hand looks just like the sort of hand that GIB would bid 2[sapdes], Cappelletti, with "♠ and a minor". I read somewhere that 1NT is "the ultimate preempt" - why not defend against it in the same way? Here is a possible layout. [hv=pc=n&s=sa73hq732dj5432cq&w=sqjt8h4dk876ca432&n=s64hkjt865da9cj97&e=sk952ha9dqtckt865&d=n&v=e&b=9&a=2h2s3h4sppp]399|300[/hv] Here's the PBN. Here's the LIN. Turns out that at this vulnerability 4♠ makes, but 5♥ is optimal!, so I guess it all depends on the field.

Aha! but not in Prime area . I discovered it by accident a few days ago. It's there but not advertised. Seems to be a feature of BBO that quite a lot of things are available but you have to search for them - apparently, that's considered to be part of the fun!

How about pomposity? I live in the real world where real things happen to real people. I don't tolerate rudeness in a social setting either. OTOH there is no need to force everyone to wear a top hat black tie and tails just to have a game of cards. Nobodies dying. This is not the operating theatre. Relax.

we're moving a little off peacet here folks

I was thinking about Presidents being cross with protesters and sending in armed forces to clear them away. The only other time I know of this happening was during another depression in the term of another ill-thought of Republican President: Herbert Hoover. This story is sort of personal for me. Patton was incredibly popular by the end of WWII. A swashbuckling figure. He even rode a horse and invented a sword! If I had been around at the time I would have been concerned that Patton might run for President. His grip on things psychiatric was not great - he was well-known for being as empathetic as a potato. Unfortunately for him, he was injured in a car accident at the end of the war and taken to a hospital in Heidelberg. At the same time, Gilbert Phillips a pugilistic, physiologist and neurosurgeon from Sydney who was working at Oxford discovering for the first time that sympathetic nerves have a respiratory modulation to their activity was rushed to his side. Phillips was an astonishing man he founded a wine society that still bears his name. There is a plaque on the Falcon Street gates to North Sydney Boys High School that I admire frequently. He could do nothing for Patton. Phillips accomplished much in a short life that ended in his fifties as a result of that scourge of Australia: melanoma. I care because I developed a scientific career around the neuroscience of breathing and blood pressure. Here is the excerpt from Wikipedia. "In July 1932, Patton (still a Major) was executive officer of the 3rd Cavalry, which was ordered to Washington by Army Chief of Staff General Douglas MacArthur. Patton took command of the 600 troops of the 3rd Cavalry, and on July 28, MacArthur ordered Patton's troops to advance on protesting veterans known as the "Bonus Army" with tear gas and bayonets. Patton was dissatisfied with MacArthur's conduct, as he recognized the legitimacy of the veterans' complaints and had himself earlier refused to issue the order to employ armed force to disperse the veterans. Patton later stated that, though he found the duty "most distasteful", he also felt that putting the marchers down prevented an insurrection and saved lives and property. He personally led the 3rd Cavalry down Pennsylvania Avenue, dispersing the protesters.[86][87] Patton also encountered his former orderly as one of the marchers and forcibly ordered him away, fearing such a meeting might make the headlines.[88]"

This appeared in the messages in the BBO splash screen. Could it be part of the problem? Alert: Don’t upgrade to iOS14 yet! by Diana | Posted on September 19, 2020We have just discovered that the latest iOS14 operating system for Apple devices causes some serious usability problems affecting almost all the lists and scrolling screens on the BBO apps and on the web version. Symptoms are: User cannot scroll. Example of lists they cannot navigate: list of results in Historylist of virtual clubsall lists of tournamentsWe’ll do our best to find a workaround as soon as possible. Meanwhile please hold off on updating your OS. We’ll post another announcement when the problem is solved. Thank you for your understanding. Feedback and comments welcome at support@bridgebase.com.

Natural redouble
pilowsky replied to DavidKok's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I used to play a system where after opener bid 1♥ or 1♠ and opps doubled, then redouble was a forced relay. As in 2♣ pass 2♦ forced relay. Saying nothing about my hand at all. If the Opps were willing to pass out 1♥ or 1♠ redoubled, we were happy to take our chances. In the Club, this did happen occasionally. The point was that opener must never bid. They don't know what responder actually has. It could be just enough to make 1♠/♥XX or it could be more. It's a better score than being in game and easier to make. If opps are going to double, they better mean business. -
This time I make a mess on the practice table

Thanks! took me a while - again... -
"rest in peace" implies that you want the person who has died to rest peacefully. For this to happen, there must be an 'existence' after death in which this rest can take place. In other words an afterlife. Instead, Most Jews wish the relatives a 'long life' My Moslem colleagues tell me that they do the same. This phrase is succour for the living. Americans - as I understand it - express 'sorrow for your loss'. I'm sure it's just a cultural thing. It's not a common phrase in Australia. I suspect that most people have little direct experience of death. Fewer are actually responsible for peoples lives. The extent to which the burden of responsibility for another persons life weighs on a person varies tremendously.

The 'My Scrapped Bidding Inventions' thread
pilowsky replied to nullve's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
Outstanding idea. Coming from a research background I immediately wanted to tinker with the system. Combined with my inability to understand bidding, remember the cards and my terrible declarer play this pretty much guaranteed lousy results. OTOH, I really liked the concept of preempts: telling your partner EXACTLY what you have with your first bid and at the same time annoying the opposition, "Approach" systems are based on this idea. Precision improves it by sharpening the ranges. So, I present "Clarity" where everything has a defined range. Pass: either "5-10 HCP; 44/xx may contain a 5 card minor; no 5 card major" or as an overcaller "0-5HCP 4xxx" 2♣: "0-5 HCP; any shape" OR "15-19 HCP extreme shape not GF" All 1 level bids are 11-13 exactly All 1NT are 14-18 4xxx All 2NT are 19-22 any shape All 3NT and above are premptive All 2 level bids are preemptive. No transfers are needed in Clarity because you already know what each other has immediately. But you can still have them if you want. This system works quite well with GIB. -
I am not arguing. You have created a 'straw man' and you keep hitting it. talk to the wall I'm not interested.

You are correct and incorrect simultaneously! I used RIP in the headline because I thought it would match RBG's 'notorious RBG' moniker, and because I thought it would appeal to the broadest audience. My family came from the same area of Eastern Europe as RBG. My father used to say that he was OK with Christianity and the other new-fangled religions as long as they didn't bother us. My mother, when I asked her (I was 11 at the time) said she was an existential humanist. We never celebrated any religious holidays. Jews (and Moslems) would wish You 'a long life', perhaps 'bis Hundert Zwanzig'. Because that's how long Moses lived - apparently. My partner wished me Shana Tova - sweet year. The bad news arrived on Board 10 in the BIL - it was a Kennedy assassination moment. Time froze. Opps opened 1NT I passed West bid 2♥ - then someone announced to the tournament that Justice Ginsberg had died. Everything stopped for about 15 seconds. Pass Pass Pass Many Jews do believe in God in the way that other religions do. I don't that's just me. I posted the prayer in an earlier post. The mourning period lasts exactly 1 year. But before that, you are part of her family and religious sit Shiva for a moment and think about her life. Otherwise, you might want to read and recite the on youtube. That's what I did.

You will not get any argument from me - I only play MP's when there's nothing else going. Who wants to get attacked by lunatics in cheap motel rooms anyway? Your response misses the point completely. The information is there. Some people would find it interesting and helpful. Why not let them have it? What's the problem? It's silly not to? It's just data. It has absolutely nothing to do with Bridge at all. People can do whatever they want with the information. Who are you to be the arbiter of what information people can or cannot have. Especially if the software has already calculated it. That's just being obdurate.

I think that if you set up a teaching table then that would work. Also, on a teaching table, there is a 'voice' facility so that you can chat to each other.

Here's how I see it: I think West is the one that was a bit verschmickled. 1NT: 14-18 balanced - this seems to be the modern 1NT opening. 2♥: Cappelletti ♥ and a minor Double of ♥: transfer to ♠ 2♠: Aha! I've got ♠ 3♣: the suit I'd prefer to ♠ since I was a bit light for my 1NT anyway 3♦: the minor I mentioned earlier. 3♠: West must have misunderstood what was happening. 5♦: Oh boy this going to be great. Pass: I wish West would shut up. Double: Gotcha Pass: Hmmm Pass: WTF Pass: should I redouble...nah.
-
Well, now it's a hypothetical question since that's not an action that GIB would take, and I've already seen the solution. If I was playing FTF I would do something different. I thought for a long time about doubling, GIB has a history of passing doubles even at the 2 level. About as trustworthy as a politician.
