Why I am giving up on BBO
pilowsky replied to hrothgar's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
So, what is it that you do with the wine or the 'pint' to the hand records in order to examine them? Doesn't it make a mess of the keyboard? -
If everyone has a computer or other device with them there are several options. Apart from team matches which are free to set up group challenges can be easily done, but it sounds like you want something more complicated.

Here is a presentation I made that explains how to do it. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1v9p-Nk8eQmKmJCLzkJeXFGyiTfjnY3vO0bdT_h6x3R8/edit?usp=sharing Paul has made a youtube presentation that you can google. Hope that helps.

Thanks for that Mike great problem, - I'm looking forward to the answer - it's got me stumped. the layout I came up with looks like this: [hv=pc=n&s=saqt8hk752dk86c75&w=sj74ha6d2caqjt982&n=sk62h9843dj74c643&e=s953hqjtdaqt953ck&d=s&v=0&b=11&a=1c2cp2dp2np3nppp]399|300[/hv] But, this layout is no good, because if South leads back the ♥K, then West just collects it in hand, runs off the ♣ in hand ditching all the♦ and then makes the contract with the remaining ♥ in dummy. So I must have something wrong. Answers my other question about what 2 ♣ over 1♣ means when 1♣ is a short♣. Thanks for that.

As usual, nice to chat. -
Hi welcome to the Forum - I had exactly the same problem about 8 months ago. Stick with it; the Forum and BBO are both great places but do take a bit of getting used to. The Forum: It's divided into several sections where you can browse around and search and read stuff on any topic If you like something you can upvote it - all social media works this way. Some of it is rubbish - most of my posts are . In fact, you can find a "forum" on just about anything on the web - BBO also has a Facebook page, and there is 'bridgewinners" which is very serious and many other 'static' resources. BBO: BBO has lots of secrets and tricks - it's like an adventure in itself trying to figure out how to work it - just like Bridge. Keep reading the Forum and clicking buttons. Regarding your specific question, if a Star doesn't want kibbitzers, perhaps they haven't got dressed yet and don't want you to see them in their pj's. You can always watch Vugraph. Another trick is to 'follow' stars. then you will see when they come online and you can kibbitz. have fun.

I see what you mean - I really like the maps in our world in data that describes the size of countries in terms of their population, or in terms of the difficulty in getting around and so on. There are lots of different ways of thinking about it. Brits think that their country is huge. They were amazed when I took a day trip from London to Birmingham. For me, this was just a commute. Back in Australia, my Boss once took a flight from Sydney to Paris for a Board meeting, took a quick stroll around the Tuilleries then came home 24 hours later. Numerator/denominator - it's all a matter of perspective. Good work with google though. -

Try taking a poll - see how far you get. -
Cool - I haven't heard the term .exe since about 1987. I suppose that's when 'app' arrived and TSR. So then yesterday, I get a hand with these cards South: ♠KJ973 ♥KQ8 ♦K7 ♣A53 The first time I put it on the Teaching table this is what happens: https://tinyurl.com/yx9k9x73 Every other time (I tried "at least" 5 more times with a 30-second pause between one try and a break of a different hand between the last try and this is the result: https://tinyurl.com/y5wzgy62 Guess what happened in the online tournament? GIB does something completely different and I got to play the hand as South: https://tinyurl.com/y3xwo9hr So, my question is this. Is GIB changing its system card randomly? I don't mind GIB changing the order in which it plays it's cards randomly, but the bidding?

Now there is a screenshot that's going to become a meme on the internet for why women do not want to go back to that club - Adam. -

Mind you, here's one I just played that I'd be happy for you to examine . Sometimes the robots can be really kind - from an ACBL IMP's tourney = +7.6. -
If you want to create .lin files use playbridge.com

Since you like cricket, I'll put it this way, since the bid is 3♠ I'm betting West is weak with 7♠. I can count 7 tricks in my hand with a ♠ stopper. I would rather hit it for 6 and hope for 2 tricks from my partner, than play with a straight bat and double - especially since my partner might fumble the catch in the outfield. So 3NT for me. Hopefully, it doesn't hit a child in the stands who'll end up on the paediatric ward.

I grew up in Sheffield - surely the weather would be pretty tempting as well... -
Well, some people can get by with just 9 cards, but for you, sure 13 .

All jokes aside, there are many reasons people play bridge and many ways of enjoying it. Just as there are many reasons for writing on the Forum. No particular reason or approach is better or worse than another. Britain is a country about the size of Manhattan - so to speak. Bill Bryson writes lovingly of his experiences of walking into an English pub and asking for directions. He had to leave 30 minutes later "with his ears bleeding" while the drinkers argued about the fastest way to get to Leeds. Australia has the population of Manhattan in a continent the size of the United States. My home club is Stepbridge, tournaments often start with greetings about the weather from thousands of kilometres away: Hobart to Cairns, Sydney to Perth, with a bit of Singapore and Amsterdam thrown in sometimes. I like playing behind 'screens'. It is different, Vive la difference. -
If you want to abuse GIB's use of Cappelletti, here's how I do it . I'm ashamed of myself, but IMP's is IMP's.

Get Skype or Facebook - and a cup of coffee. I'm happy to yell at you about diamonds from wherever you are in the world . NPP you blithering idiot -
I just played in an ACBL online challenge format tournament. One of the other players was ranked in the top ten of online players. I used the traveller with a side by side trick by trick comparison with two tabs open on my browser to compare my bidding and play. I also look to see how others do. I use as many available tools that I can find. The best lessons I get are from the travellers. Then comes the helpful comments on the Forum...

It's funny you should say that.

No. You qualify for the same free period that everyone else gets. But as a bonus, you can have a 12 board session with me .

I could not disagree more. I will never go back to the 'Club'. In the age of chat/Skype etc BBO, Stepbridge and others have proven that Bridge and all of the other mind sports really are video games - best undertaken from the comfort of your own home. Not only is it more comfortable, better for the environment, cheaper and safer it is also much more entertaining. Also, there is more to Bridge than remembering systems and rules. I am learning all sorts of stuff because I can open quickly open another tab on my browser and absorb a 'crash course' on just about anything in between rounds. And I get to do some laundry, make my own coffee, shout at my partner, play loud music (rarely), have a poodle on my lap: it's Nirvana I will keep applying gentle pressure to BBO in the hope that I can get them to gradually improve their interface and what is offered - there is a lot that is opaque and hard to use. The alternative is not for me. I better go, my regular US partner will be online soon.
