  1. It happened to me twice today. And simultaneously to the person I was chatting to in London (UK) at the time. I have excellent internet. Regarding the inability of BBO to replicate something, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. Or in this case, absence of absence may not be evidence of presence.
  2. To do that open the folder where the hand you want is and click on it to open it. Then click on the three white bars>> export>> to table. This export to table option is available for hands in your history as well but only when on a bidding/teaching table.
  3. For some reason "tractor factory" sat with me as an earworm over the last 45 years. It only popped up again on youtube very recently and hasn't had the airing it deserved. According to the notes under the song it came from a group of Adelaide arty types in the 1970's (which explains why it had airplay there when I was a teenager). Here's one of their references. Hope you enjoyed it.
  4. It didn't work well for the indigenous people of Canada, the USA, Mexico, Brazil, Australia etc etc etc. It sort of worked out for people in Vietnam, New Zealand, India, the Phillipines and South Africa. The complexity in Ukraine includes the fact that there is essentially a "Russian half" on the East side of the river and another group on the West side of the river. Neither side really wants to go back to Soviet-era black-and-white television production quotas. There's a 1 minute intro before the song - skip over it.
  5. I think that's another issue. Both ideas are possible. I'm not a virologist but it would obviously be a good thing if they could find an antigen on the virus that was static and could not change without losing virulence. I do have experience in making antibodies. It's very hard. There are so many problems here. 1) there might be a protein (called the antigen - antigens can have multiple epitopes which are the individual sites antibodies bind to) that is unique and doesn't change but is not on the outside of the virus. The protein must be exposed to the host to be an 'epitope' if it isn't it's called a 'cryptotope' (or cryptope) this means that antibodies made against it can't see it in the virus and therefore don't work. This is a really common problem when making antibodies. 2) some proteins are incredibly hard to make antibodies to - some are impossible - don't get me started. 3) even if you find a protein that is a good candidate it has to be really really antigenic to be useful for immunising a whole population because it needs to make >99.99% of subjects immune to be effective. Most of the time when making antibodies in the lab. a 2/3 success rate is acceptable. This will not cut it in immunisation programs. 4) Not all antibodies are the same. You have to have an antigen that provokes a really good response resulting in neutralising antibodies in nearly everyone. I can see why they went for the spike protein. It sits on the outside and looks like the bristles of a brush. Clearly the most likely target. Another approach is to make a drug that blocks the enzyme that the virus uses to turn the cellular machinery into a virus factory - like molnuprivar which blocks the RNA dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp). Of course this is not good as a prophylactic and can't replace vaccination.
  6. It's a fair point - I'll cop to that. In any event, I think we can say that this diseases caused by coronaviruses are now endemic in the human population and will continue to provide new challenges and mutations in the years to come. Yes, influenza viruses are the same type of virus as the devastating of 1918. This virus has been around for centuries and occasionally mutates to a more virulent strain. It doesn't help that there are so many more humans around and that they are much older and insist on travelling around so much when phone calls and zoom/skype are readily available, but I suppose I used to be one of them. Hopefully the RNA vaccine approach will make it more likely that we can have polyvalent vaccines in the future that allow a single shot that targets multiple viruses (as discussed in detail with some nice diagrams here).

In a spasm of sobriety I decided to attempt to bid (what I thought was) normally and opened a cautious 1♦. My partner (this is best hand IMP's btw) responded with a genteel 1♥. I pushed on with an orthodox 2NT and the robot bid Gerber. The first time I've seen Gerber from GIB outside a NT opening. After providing the appropriate response I find myself in 6NT. Pass, pass... and... West, with the AK of diamonds, acutely aware of the danger that I might escape to 7♥ if he slides in a double decides to pass. Once the north robot gets the bit between his teeth there appears to be no stopping him. At the other table south attempted to apply the brakes by bidding 4♠. Nothing doing - North went to 6NT still undoubled and we both ended up with 6NT-1. [/hv]
  8. If players have to start marking their level of decency on their cards; directing is going to become very problematic down here in the cheap seats!
  9. Agree, but the specific new problem is that when my services are no longer needed and I'm removed from my seat I find myself logged out as well. When playing in the casual area being 'removed' doesn't cause a logout. As P. Seeger might say: Sag mir wo die spielers sind? Booted out mit der bots?
  10. Is this what Rodwell (p 169 of 'the files') refers to as "middling"? He gives examples of leading 9 from K9x [hv=pc=n&s=st53hdc&w=skj96hdc&n=sq74hdc&e=sa82hdc]399|300[/hv][hv=pc=n&s=shdt752c&w=shdaq83c&n=shdj4c&e=shdk96c]399|300[/hv] If the person leading holds 4 cards he calls it the "Reese play"
  11. OK. I just opened BBO on my Mac desktop using Firefox. It works the same as Chrome. If you export >> handviewer link >> then click on the URL (https://tinyurl.com/......) that appears, it opens the link in a new tab. If you go back and find another hand to look at but Right click on the URL you get a menu that lets you do various other things including "Open Link in New Tab". If you do it that way the other hand will stay open in the original tab.
  12. I've been doing a bit of subbing recently and find that if my services are no longer required and the Director removes me when the original player returns, I am kicked out of BBO entirely. And have to log in again. At which point I get a message saying something like "the director will return you blah blah". I know that no one's dying and I can just log back in but it seems a bit mean. Why not just return the sub to the main interface?
  13. When I do what OP describes the second deal replaces the first deal in the tab that was opened (as you say). Unless I right click on the link and select 'open in new tab'. Then I get both. In either case it never fails to work the second time - which seems to be what is described in the post. Same thing happens when I use the app on my phone.
  14. What are you using? Phone/tablet/laptop/desktop? Mac/PC/other? Which browser? chrome/edge/safari etc etc.
  15. Yes people do things that are the Bridge equivalent of walking into traffic without looking both ways. Politicians (and the general public) think that events that have a 1% chance of happening every year (major pandemics for example) are not worth preparing for. And it is annoying when people do things we think are foolish and irresponsible because you and I never make mistakes, take unnecessary risks, lack sufficient knowledge, get distracted by (e.g. Russian invaders) etc etc. But to coin a word I think FONK (fear of not knowing) what partner will understand by your bid/lead is the biggest issue. The 2/1 system that "everyone is playing" includes the following minor transfer system: 1NT (15-17 2-5 HSCD) - with no interference the following applies: 2NT means? 3C means? 2S means? How about 1D - pass - 2H? What about Lebensohl? What does the lead of a K against a 4S contract usually mean? Setting aside the question of the proportion of players that have made an effort to read the GIB 2/1 system notes (which is the 2/1 that is meant when they say "everyone plays 2/1"), what would you be willing (in an individual) to bid over 1NT with the following: ♠ AKxxx ♥ AQxxx ♦ xx ♣ x
  16. Not a high bar. Most people have a fingernail.
  17. Not going quite as well as the "Operators" hoped.
  18. It says 2/1 but good luck with that. It's exactly the same as any other individual. Everyone does exactly the same thing in their own unique way.
  19. On other gaming sites this is handled by allowing one of the players to set the game to "no undo".
  20. Click on the 'details' tab for the tourney before you register. The rewards tourney allow for the opportunity to generate vast wealth beyond the wildest dreams of Avarice.
  21. Most of the Fab's are in Taiwan and South Korea. Which is why it was unsurprising that Biden spent time in the SOTU speaking glowingly about a new foundry in the USA. His speech was all about pulling up the drawbridges and circling the wagons.
  22. Speaking at the Oxford Union a few days ago after the start of Putin's invasion.
  23. The lecture from 2015 is extraordinarily prescient. He points out that the insistence by the USA at a meeting in Bucharest in 2008 that Ukraine and Georgia should become NATO members is the root cause of this conflict.
  24. Nothing has changed. John J Mearsheimer is a rock star.
