Aversion against trump leads?
pilowsky replied to helene_t's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
This example is what I summarised as "struggle to find a fit" - Bird and Anthias write: "when responder opts to stop in the openers second suit". I imagine this is quite common playing forcing 1NT in 2/1 e.g. 1♣ - 1NT - 2♦ - Px3 -
Aversion against trump leads?

Bird and Anthias have some specific advice including: When your side suits contain honours. When they struggle to find a fit. When they reach 4M after a Stayman sequence and your side suits all have honours. But not when they use a gadget to reach a sound game contract. I have the impression that GIB really likes to lead a singleton trump if the distribution looks like 4441. Which fits with 3. above. Most of the time the simulations oppose a trump lead. Is the reason to try to get the play to come back to your hand if declarer is likely to be much stronger than dummy? I have encountered players - ranging from strong GM level to weaker than me (yes I know - HTB) - that seem to do it very commonly. -

That seems to be the best conclusion to draw. A quick simulation suggests that 4S is right here 40-70% of the time depending on information that would be obtained with better methods/solid agreements. -

Apologies for that. I post my robot shenanigans in the robot section. When I'm playing Bridge I post in the human section. I was "2S" on this hand. This hand came from one of the free tournaments on BBO (MP) playing a fairly simple strong NT system with a regular (-ish) partner. -

To find out where you stand (politically) on the Australian spectrum try vote compass. It appears that the Australian conservatives have moved more to the right since last time. For orientation (approximately): Morrison=Trump Albanese=Biden Bandt=Stein

It came out in August 2021 and has been viewed 156 times and liked (up until now) by nobody. It features some people that appear to know what they're talking about.

I'm with you here - television is a neurotoxin. I don't know what a safe dose is but I bet it's smaller than an award ceremony where they pat each other on the back/face/arse.

Are you able to reproduce a single coherent paragraph that Trump said (even a single sentence would be a start) that was not read from a teleprompter (presumably written by a stooge - I think there were more than 3)? In all the interviews I saw where he had to speak without assistance (my favourite is the dark shadows interview with Laura Ingraham) it all sounded like word salad. etc etc. Fine policy-making indeed.

There's a character limit of about 250. eg " 2/1, lorem ipsum lorem ipsum lorem ipsum orem ipsum lorem ipsum lorem ipsum lorem ipsum lorem ipsum lorem ipsum orem ipsum lorem ipsum lorem ipsum lorem ipsum lorem ipsum lorem ipsum orem ipsum lorem ipsum lorem ipsum lorem ipsum lorem ipsum lorem ipsum" - is about the maximum. Also you may need to remember to click "Save changes" at the bottom of the profile area after you make a change (obviously...).

Best team at the world championships
pilowsky replied to jammen's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Is the seniors section 'open' or do women have a separate competition so the men have a chance to win something? -
One possibility is that you have accidentally muted the BBO site. This can be done(undone) in chrome by right-clicking and then clicking the 'mute site' ('unmute site') option that appears when you right click on the tab. If this is what's happened you might see a little microphone symbol with a line through it on the tab. Or: the volume is turned down you suddenly went deaf and didn't notice you have plugged in earphones and forgotten etc etc

I try to glance at as many different news feeds as possible - even Newsmax. How else am I to try and understand what other world views are?

Your link doesn't work. And your comment bears no relation to the current debate about salt intake. Or was it just an attempt at humour? In any event a quick search reveals this from Eric Topol's twitter feed: "Salt substitute really worked well to reduce major cardiovascular events in a large randomized trial conducted in China @NEJM today #ESCCongress2021 https://nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2105675?query=featured_home". So you seem to be reprocessing a comment that Topol made about a study conducted using data from China that was based on information from 600 rural villages. Suggesting that if you are a rural villager in China and have a very large salt intake (and where the rate of smoking is much higher) then maybe...

Heart failure is a much more dangerous disease than most cancers. The outcome from the day of first diagnosis is still abysmal. In 2019 it was reported in the BMJ that "Survival rates in patients with heart failure were 75.9% (95% confidence interval 75.5% to 76.3%) at one year, 45.5% (45.1 to 46.0) at five years, 24.5% (23.9 to 25.0) at 10 years, and 12.7% (11.9 to 13.5) at 15 years. Table 3 shows survival rates by age and sex. Women had worse short term and long term outcomes than men (one year survival 74.5% v 77.2% (P<0.001) and 15 year survival 11.0% v 14.1% (P<0.001)). Age at diagnosis was a significant determinant of subsequent survival." The reason that a reduction in dietary salt is recommended for the whole population is that it is associated with an increased risk of high blood pressure. Persistent high blood pressure causes target organ damage (blood vessels, heart, kidney brain etc) that may in turn lead to heart failure. By the time you have heart failure the benefit of not eating salty bacon is considerably attenuated. It's worth noting that a high-salt diet is generally associated with a high-fat, high-sugar diet. Do the food mall experiment: where do you see the candidates for heart failure - at the salad bar or at Ray Kroc's cafe? Plucking a single association (or comment from Topol) without understanding the full context is like opening 4NT and wondering why partner doesn't respond with 5H - 2 key cards and no queen.

In a study titled "Effect of Early Treatment with Ivermectin among Patients with Covid-19" by Reis G. et al (30 Mar 2022) in the NEJM the authors find nothing. Must be great to do a study where you set up a null hypothesis, find null and still get a paper in the New England Journal of Medicine. On the plus side the treatment arm didn't cause any harm. Of course, the authors did note (consonant with the delusional state of ivermectin proponents) that: I suspect that when they politely say 'paramedical' they are not meaning to include paramedics but are thinking of parapsychologists etc. This is the problem with alternative medicine in general, it's exactly that, an alternative to medicine. For reasons that aren't clear, the authors didn't include a "prayer arm" in the study. I suppose that'll be the subject of the next grant - following on from Francis Galton's work.

If you start a rumour that Putin is diabetic they'll start sending him hydroxychloroquine.

I understand that some players believe that differences in time before a bid is made conveys special information about a bid. How does this affect the principle of filling in the alert prior to making the bid? FWIW - kibitzing the game over the past few days I've seen multiple alerts with no description.

Hard to argue with Eric Topol since he's married to smerriman!

These are bogus team matches that are set up by someone who just uses the sub pool to fill seats. The so-called director (who typically never does any actual directing) just keeps banging on the sub button until all seats are filled or everyone quits in frustration. I'm sure there are genuine team matches where a sub is coming in because of a genuine problem. Genuine team matches where a group of eight people want to play a game in a team format are not the problem.
