It also means they can use the components that make the cars so posh for their (hopefully) dwindling stock of war machines. I keep seeing reports that Putin is A) on corticosteroids - eg prednisolone, and B) sick with cancer (which would fit with certain types of chemotherapy that includes (A)). A well-known and very common side-effect of treatment with steroids is rage - amongst a whole bunch of other psychiatric symptoms.

They clearly indicate that in Bridge circles the use of the term Q widely is understood as cue/control. I have never heard of a 4 level bid of a suit that most people would reasonably understand to mean I have the queen (and by inference denying the ???). Mind you I haven't been playing bridge very long. I'm looking for an expressive förk. here but (n)ortning comes to mind.

There are 'definitive' bridge publications? Q is commonly used as shorthand for cue. You can find it here by Ana Roth on the WYB (world youth bridge) site in a discussion of Lebensohl. Edit - A quick google search turns up an article where Barry Harper distinguishes between Q and Cue - not sure if this is idiosyncratic or defined as standard. And from Canada And from John Adams in Spokane USA - on Bridgewinners:

Q for cue is standard.

What does this double mean?
pilowsky replied to pilowsky's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Yes, I showed declarer's hand because it seemed that the double represents a problem for declarer. The full hand is shown in the video (see link in OP). The person presenting the hand was firm in his belief that a ♥ lead was called for. -
"I saw a poll"! There's a reason the silent majority don't have much to say.

Uniform width of cards in Hand Diagram
pilowsky replied to m5m3a's topic in Suggestions for the Software
The strange part about it is that in order to create a deal the simplest way to do it is to create a range - [A|K|Q|J|T|9|8|7|6|5|4|3|2]. And then use a shuffle function. It takes additional work to substitute a '10' for a 'T'. Linus 10orvalds wouldn't approve. -
Publications are starting to emerge that aim to measure the impact of the COVID pandemic. Here are the findings of a group called "COVID-19 Excess Mortality Collaborators" published in The Lancet (2022; 399:1513-36) a few weeks ago titled "Estimating excess mortality due to the COVID-19 pandemic: a systematic analysis of COVID-19-related mortality, 2020–21."

After the War of Northern aggression as the people in NC that I met called it, and after WWI and then after WWII and after the special military operations in Korea, Cuba, Viet Nam, Grenada, Iraq, Kuwait, Iran, Serbia, Bosnia etc etc everyone said that the situation is completely under control. It wasn't and it isn't. FWIW, I predict that: 1. The Soviets will take the Donbas, Finland, Sweden AND Switzerland will join NATO. 2. Europe will stop all imports of Soviet gas. 3. The Soviet economy will collapse (for the umpteenth time this century) reinforcing the grip of authoritarianism. 4. The US, UK and Australian media will continue to devote more time to sport and other important news such as (from this morning's news): will Ange Postecoglu will stay with Rangers (no), will Amber or Johnny win (who cares), will sperm donor survivors (yes you heard it right) be able to locate their "genetic father", who will win the Archibald prize. 5. Investment in research will continue to decrease as publication of unimportant non-science continues to rise. 6. More money will be spent on Twitter and pointless lawsuits in the USA than on preventing destruction of the climate.

Why can't I cancel a robot challenge?
pilowsky replied to EarlPurple's topic in General BBO Discussion
Just bid 7NT and concede every trick. It'll be over before you know it happened. The hands don't seem to get stored. It's just practice and nobody cares - unless you post it on the forum for all to enjoy. -
I used to support Remain - then I found the EU cookie law

why is someone with 2700+ bbo points in the 499ers?
pilowsky replied to underd0g's topic in BBO Support Forum
You can only spend them in the jurisdiction where they are earned. If you get 100 ABF points you might be able to afford a coffee. I'm saving up for a set of steak knives. -
How about a Daylong Just Defend tournament
pilowsky replied to EarlPurple's topic in BBO Tournaments Discussion
You can get this experience (for free) by going to the challenges section of the main menu and 'challenge a robot'. Uncheck the challenge that says "just declare". Choose matchpoints if you prefer. Set the number of boards (up to 16). As in the Zenith tournament, half the boards will be in defence (depending on how aggressive you are - which is also a valuable learning experience). Working out what the robots discards are is part of the fun. Signalling might work well for humans but working out (trying to anyway) where the cards are is also helpful. If you want to save a hand you will need to export the link and store it offline because the history is (for some inexplicable reason) not provided in the BBO myhands collection. -
I started counting all the false statements and inaccuracies but ran out of fingers. Nice use of the semicolon though; props for that.

After my optimistic 2S the auction described resulted. What should I lead? [/hv] The complete disaster:

why is someone with 2700+ bbo points in the 499ers?
pilowsky replied to underd0g's topic in BBO Support Forum
Because Knarf1 has: ACBL Virtual Clubs 53.37 American Contract Bridge League 68.27 But also has: Robot Duplicate - IMP 135.32Robot Duplicate - MP 245.33Robot Race 1843.04 According to many writers on this forum playing against robots is a pointless waste of time that has absolutely nothing to do with Bridge skill. This may be true, or maybe not. -
Bagel/Beagle? - yours for only $5 in the USA. Try Lost Valley of the Dinosaurs for a real challenge.

Just saw a message on BBO announcing the "April 2022 BBO points leaders". The next line says: "Congratulations to the top 30 BBO Point winners for March 2022". And then there's a list with the headline: "February BBO Points Race Winners". This is followed by a list of the usual suspects with individual names highlighted as links to a page that says: "Archives". On this list at position 7 is "7 Q Leo LaSota" But on the masterpoints page it says "1 Leo LaSota" with a star in the 'A' position (on both BBO and ACBL lists).

A comprehensive study on the demography of abortion was published last year in Lancet Glob Health (2020 Sep;8(9):e1152-e1161. doi: 10.1016/S2214-109X(20)30315-6. Epub 2020 Jul 22.). It's free to download. The authors "developed a model that simultaneously estimated incidence of unintended pregnancy and abortion within a Bayesian framework." The main findings were that: Unintended pregnancy and abortion by income, region, and the legal status of abortion: estimates from a comprehensive model for 1990-2019 Jonathan Bearak 1, Anna Popinchalk 2, Bela Ganatra 3, Ann-Beth Moller 3, Özge Tunçalp 3, Cynthia Beavin 2, Lorraine Kwok 2, Leontine Alkema 4 PMID: 32710833 Here's a link to the full text.

20 weeks is half way through the pregnancy. Neural tube defects can now be detected with modern ultrasound in the first trimester. In any event the question of when life begins is something that religious people feel very strongly about. At the moment of conception? At about 20 weeks? Or when the dog dies and the kids leave home? If it was me that was making the decision I wouldn't want Dr Strangelove from Texas telling me what to do.
