  1. I know it says in the system notes that they "sometimes show count" but what does that mean? When do they not show count? The statement has no heuristic meaning at all. OTOH, I have the impression that GIB plays high encourage. So if it discards a high honour it implies that leading that suit might result in a trick. But I don't know how to formally test this idea.
  2. If you start a teaching table there is a free option to communicate by "voice". The quality was not great when I tried it in the past but I may have been unlucky. Zoom/Skype is easier.
  3. The first time I heard the term "fictional narrative" as an alternative to saying bullshit was when She didn't get very far. I'm not sure why the term is now "false narrative" except that it has an appealing assonance.
  4. AFAIK Corporations don't have "income" in the same way that individuals do. WaPo (your example is an entity 'owned by shareholders'. Money flows into the WaPo corporation and money flows out - in all kinds of ways. What they report on their balance sheet is things like: EBIT. Earnings before interest and tax. After they 'write-down' the cost of various things (like postal sorting machines if you let a maniac amok in your mail delivery service) they are left with a sum of money that they might pay a proportion of to government. Or maybe not. It only resolves into income when it gets into the hands of someone who can dispose of it by purchasing an unnecessary commodity known as "consumer discretionary" - i.e. something we won't die without (Google search says: goods and services that are considered non-essential by consumers, but desirable if their available income is sufficient to purchase them.). Discretionary income would definitely include the WaPo, the NYT, BBO$. Anything produced by Murdoch - Fox news, The Simpsons etc falls into the discretionary category as do cigarettes and alcohol. TV, cigarettes and alcohol are neurotoxins that will harm you (and others). If the company sets aside an amount of money termed "profit" the people that own the company (Board of Directors representing the major shareholders) might take some of that money from the corporate bank account, pay the government the going tax rate in the Jurisdiction they are domiciled, and give the rest to you, the shareholder. Sometimes they don't pay the tax in which case the shareholder has to at the personal tax rate (franked, partially franked and not franked at all). In any event, the money paid to the government as tax then distributes the taxed money amongst its employees. What do the employees do with this largesse? They buy the WaPo, Fox news, smoke cigarettes and red wine. When they do this they pay local taxes to state governments who give it to their employees to.... Sometimes the government will create a 'stockpile' in case of emergency. The US stockpile includes ventilators, PPE and sperm oil. What happens in China? Apparently there are 3 types of plastic waste. Some of the waste can be recycled but a large amount (plastic bags and other small bits) cannot. The US would ship this garbage in massive bales to China where it was recycled for a tiny profit. Unfortunately the recycling process made the workers sick. In China - like Australia - sick people are the responsibility of everyone (aka government). The Chinese government realised that even though the company was making a profit they then made a loss because the government was picking up the tab for looking after the sick citizens. In the USA being sick is a "personal responsibility" because you have "freedom" and can "say anything you want", carry guns and stuff like that. So in the USA - and Australia for that matter - conservatism means that if you can make a profit the waste sickness and pestilence caused by your actions is fine thank you very much. What riles people like Bernie and me is that the owner of the WaPo is spending his discretionary money on a giant penis-shaped tube while the people that make the money for him are getting as sick as cats and never get to ride in the phallus.
  5. It's hard to think of a vessel sufficiently empty to represent Mr T. McArthur Wheeler comes to mind.
  6. Pilowsky just copied what Nige1 did but he still can't work out how to show a hand so that NS are visible and EW are hidden but the cards from EW still appear when you use the 'next' and 'previous' buttons. The format [hv=full link]300|300| - your words here - [/hv] Is what I always use. The above is: The format {hv='full link'}300|300| - your words here - {/hv} But with square brackets instead of curly braces. [hv=d=n&v=0&b=1&a=1cppp]133|100| - Also works with the Spade Diagram button on the forum.[/hv] {hv=d=n&v=0&b=1&a=1cppp}133|100| - Also works with the Spade Diagram button on the forum.{/hv}
  7. A simple way to discover the masterpoint history of a group of players (Only applies to points earned on BBO) is to look up the username in the database (https://www.bridgebase.com/points/index.php) Since this can be a bit tedious you can also collect the results for a group of people simultaneously by using a google sheets spreadsheet and for each player you are interested in put this formula into a cell: =IMPORTHTML("https://www.bridgebase.com/points/index.php?u=username","table",2) Change username to the username - obviously. Substituting '2' for '1' returns the persons username, and points needed to reach the next rank increment.
  8. [hv=pc=n&s=sj7hj752dt854cq86&w=sqt3h983daq32ck72&n=sk982hkqt6dj7c543&e=sa654ha4dk96cajt9&d=s&v=0&b=11&a=ppp1np3nppp]399|300| This hand was dealt on a boat called Canberra somewhere near Norway before 2006 (the timestamp on the video) The ♥2 was led and Forrester made 8 tricks. If you want to see how he did it you can watch it .Where did he go wrong?[/hv]
  9. There seems to be a bit of misunderstanding about the term "herd immunity". The original idea was based on the metaphor of gazelles grazing on grass. Gather together in a group and most of you will survive when a lion attacks. Unfortunately, in the case of an airborne virus a better metaphor is the ball of fish that get gobbled by a shiver of sharks. In the end they all get eaten. Countries like Australia where health care is completely free have a specific problem of limited health resources that are divided according to need not wealth. This means that if some of the fish decide not to wear shark-proof mesh because they know better, then they will be more likely to get savaged by the virus. They will then consume resources that may otherwise be used by the mesh-wearing fish that suffer a heart attack or fractured fin. This is real problem because there are now about 5000 people in hospital in Australia which is about 10% of all public hospital beds. These people are disproportionately unvaccinated. They are gluing up the works and blocking so-called "elective surgery". Elective surgery is not liposuction or tummy tucks. Elective surgery is anything that can be put off for a week or more - including some cancer treatments. Ok, chew gum, wear lycra or watch television - I don't care; but if you want to enjoy the hospitals and roads everyone contributes to get vaccinated and wear a seat-belt.
  10. Just out of interest for us non-experts, what is it about this hand that would lead you to upgrade it out of the 15-17 range?
  11. In the end you are playing to see if you can do better than you did last time. That's the good thing about games - there's a 'next time'. Mistakes don't come back to haunt you. It doesn't really matter what others do.
  12. If you are having difficulty making hands you can prepare them with "playbridge.com" and import them. Here is a step-by-step explanation. After you set up a teaching table you can load up hands you have previously played using the "export to table" function.
  13. Are there any groups of people that compliment you on your play?
  14. First described by C Northcote Parkinson. If you have a few minutes and want something for nothing (an excellent price) you can read it here. He describes it as the Law of triviality. The smaller the amount of money the easier it is to understand. People find it easier to spend hours arguing about things that are of no consequence. Like sport. Or which method of interfering over a strong no trump is "the best".
  15. 42/39 = 7.7% FWIW In any event, the answer is obviously 42. To be fair, even robots have to eat and they don't get tips.
  16. [hv=https://www.bridgebase.com/tools/handviewer.html?lin=st%7C%7Cpn%7Cpilowsky,~~v3fakebot,~~v3fakebot,~~v3fakebot%7Cmd%7C3SQ4HKQ954DAQ9CA74,SA762HAJDJ87CKT93,SKT985H3DT52CQJ52,SJ3HT8762DK643C86%7Csv%7Co%7Crh%7C%7Cah%7CBoard%209%7Cmb%7CP%7Cmb%7CP%7Cmb%7CP%7Cmb%7Cp%7C|]300|300| I would count South for 17 and open 1NT and probably end up in 2S. If I did end up in 3NT I'm pretty sure I would mess it up but imagining this layout I would collect the ♣3 in hand then play the ♥K. Taking the return in hand I would next attack the spades (starting with the ♠Q). West will then have to be the gift that keeps on giving. [/hv]
  17. Elsewhere on the 52 Entertainment site it is stated that: There is a very slight possibility that this claim is a mild exaggeration. They also own Funbridge but probably have nothing to do with the Australian club Funbridge Australia - membership = 1.
  18. Not sure what that add-on might be but when I open it from my Pixel I get a shareable link: https://www.bridgebase.com/tools/handviewer.html?bbo=y&lin=pn%7Cpilowsky,number%20one,system_k_k,Millbank22%7Cst%7C%7Cmd%7C2S59H389KD36AC34TQ%2CS47TJAHJQD89QKC29%2CS236QH7TAD47JC5JK%2C%7Crh%7C%7Cah%7CBoard%204%7Csv%7Cb%7Cmb%7C1S%7Cmb%7Cp%7Cmb%7Cp%7Cmb%7Cp%7Cpc%7CHT%7Cpc%7CH2%7Cpc%7CH3%7Cpc%7CHQ%7Cpc%7CS4%7Cpc%7CS2%7Cpc%7CSK%7Cpc%7CS5%7Cpc%7CS8%7Cpc%7CS9%7Cpc%7CST%7Cpc%7CSQ%7Cpc%7CHA%7Cpc%7CH4%7Cpc%7CH8%7Cpc%7CHJ%7Cpc%7CH7%7Cpc%7CH6%7Cpc%7CH9%7Cpc%7CS7%7Cpc%7CC2%7Cpc%7CC5%7Cpc%7CCA%7Cpc%7CC3%7Cpc%7CD2%7Cpc%7CD3%7Cpc%7CDQ%7Cpc%7CD4%7Cpc%7CSA%7Cpc%7CS3%7Cpc%7CH5%7Cpc%7CHK%7Cpc%7CSJ%7Cpc%7CS6%7Cpc%7CD5%7Cpc%7CD6%7Cpc%7CC9%7Cpc%7CCJ%7Cpc%7CC6%7Cpc%7CC4%7Cpc%7CCK%7Cpc%7CC7%7Cpc%7CCT%7Cpc%7CD8%7Cpc%7CD7%7Cpc%7CDT%7Cpc%7CDA%7Cpc%7CD9%7Cpc%7CCQ%7Cpc%7CDK%7Cpc%7CDJ%7Cpc%7CC8%7C
  19. I disabled the Adblocker and went to advanced settings where I specifically allowed BBO.com to show redirects and popups. Chrome blocks these by default. If I inspect the link as you suggest I can see that the whole link is present in the inspector tab (in both C and FF) but cannot get it to show in chrome. Then I allowed all popups and redirects and I still get: https://www.bridgeba...6962-1643099400 So I opened firefox (which I think you are using) and get: https://www.bridgeba...pilowsky,number one,system_k_k,Millbank22|st||md|2S59H389KD36AC34TQ%2CS47TJAHJQD89QKC29%2CS236QH7TAD47JC5JK%2C|rh||ah|Board 4|sv|b|mb|1S|mb|p|mb|p|mb|p|pc|HT|pc|H2|pc|H3|pc|HQ|pc|S4|pc|S2|pc|SK|pc|S5|pc|S8|pc|S9|pc|ST|pc|SQ|pc|HA|pc|H4|pc|H8|pc|HJ|pc|H7|pc|H6|pc|H9|pc|S7|pc|C2|pc|C5|pc|CA|pc|C3|pc|D2|pc|D3|pc|DQ|pc|D4|pc|SA|pc|S3|pc|H5|pc|HK|pc|SJ|pc|S6|pc|D5|pc|D6|pc|C9|pc|CJ|pc|C6|pc|C4|pc|CK|pc|C7|pc|CT|pc|D8|pc|D7|pc|DT|pc|DA|pc|D9|pc|CQ|pc|DK|pc|DJ|pc|C8| Suggesting this is a Chrome issue. This may be a problem since although I quite like Firefox, most people don't prefer it. https://www.google.c...ar+browser+2021 Browser____________StatCounter October _____2021Wikimedia October 2021 Chrome_________________64.67%_________________52.5% Safari___________________19.06%_________________23.9% Edge____________________4.10%___________________3.0% Firefox___________________3.66%___________________4.4%
  20. So I went to the database and found a hand I wanted to review. I clicked on the movie link and it opened a new tab in my Chrome browser on MacOS. It looked like this: https://www.bridgeba...962-1643099400 Instead of the promised full file. Interestingly if you click on the link pasted here it auto-adds a "." to the end of the link and no cards appear. I added the same link under the word "this" and it works fine. What did I do wrong (apart from the bidding and play of course).
  21. In order to become delirious because of a lack of oxygen supply to the cortex it is first necessary to have one. So no.
  22. A lot of people with hypoxia (including those lucky enough to get an oxygen mask) become somewhat delirious and "rip off their masks".
  23. This conversation highlights the problem when the health of the population is an individual problem and not a human right. Yes, the vaccine is free in America, but what happens if you have a side-effect and need to go to the Doctor? In America any interaction with the health-"care" system brings with it the risk of incurring a debt. Wages in the USA are low. A visit to the doctor might cost more than 10% of your weekly earnings. And that's if nothing happens apart from a chat. Treatment of hypertension is another area where the sufferer is typically symptom free (until they have a heart attack or stroke). The cost of medication is several hundred dollars/year. Add on other disorders and all those people living on an income below the median quickly find it hard to weigh up the pro's and cons of paying. Surprisingly, the bulk of the population are not retired (or active) mathematicians that play Bridge. They find it hard to juggle these costs and risks and keep food on the table.
  24. Well that explains it. I always wondered if there was a limit on the number of free tournaments I was allowed to win before other people started to complain.
  25. The price of a short robot tournament now vastly exceeds the cost of renting a robot. So unless you really value BBO points from best hand tourneys or you have some cash you want to get rid of, these tournaments are rapidly losing their appeal. Particularly since their main use (for me anyway) is declarer practice. My favourite part of the message was: I wasn't sure if I should test the image or rate it as a test - of what? And there are no stars to click on so that's a problem.
