SIR,what is the definition of "EXTRAS"?.If opener has HQJ10 ,that's also an undisclosed "'EXTRAS".
-
Sirs, pardon me as I saw this problem post too late and the hand was already exposed.I was thinking of the very hand with partner I.e.Kxxx xx x AKQxxx,To bid a confident grand as per the biding given Ishall need tha SQ also with the opener and if he has not then there is no way one can find out If has DQ .I f he does not have that too then one shall be forced to play in 6 NT as the bidding has already gone beyond 6C.Opener has already denied the heart King and DK Hence a bid of 5NT ,when using the Spiral shall enquire about the SQ.When Opener bids6C to deny it then its the end and will go Pass Pass Pass.

Its not easy to find a foolproof solution.I would have followed the line which has been already posted by "rhm" This play will be successfull in most of the "LIKELY"distributions of the trump suit.

Stay Low on Misfits
msjennifer replied to Tramticket's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Sir ,As other posters have pointed out your partner should have led a trump. However,I feel that 2C was the limit of your partners hand and if I was in his/her seat I certainly would have kept quiet after that.Alas your side achieved a very good result as the opponents arrived on speaking terms. -
Sir,I shall open 1D.Given the responders hand I shall reply 1S to the opening bid of 1D.
-
Sir,Use the SPIRAL. You want to know specifically about club king. Now 5D will be sign off.5H WILL ASK ABOUT DQ,5S asks about SK, 5NT asks about HK and 6C asks for CK,So bid 6C if partner does not have it he will bid the next step 6D and if he has it he will respond 6H .For more details please refer George Rosenkranz THE SPIRAL on GOOGLE search.(If you do not like this method then just bid 5NT and hope for the best). In the present case when he denies CK you can pass his 6D bid.And if he bids 6H you can bid 7NT.There is perhaps no way to find out if he has AKQJx of S but not the CK.A spade break of 4/3 and one can discard all 4 club losers and score 7NT as you will be playing the hand with 6D,5S,and the H and C aces.

A bid of 2S now and 3S later means one is pushing them to 4H .
-
Sir,since the topic has been raised it looks like they do play Acol.In England one comes across a large number of Seniors who still play ACOL.However as you say it appears only a handful of players( at high level)play ACOL.
-
2D shows a strong enough support for partners overcall.2/3 S will show weak raises.3D is not indicated as it may help opponents more than partner.3/4 H are very questionable. For an unfamiliar partner I shall bid 3S.
-
Sir,the way is there.1C-1NT-2NT shows the Club suit and it is not an "invitational" bid. 1C-1NT-2C is staymanish and responder bids 2D with 4 Hearts, bids 2H with 4 carder spades and both show 8-10 HCP.2NT reply shows no 4 card major or a five card minor and 8-10 HCP.A 3C reply shows 4 card club suit and another 4 card suit with 11-13 HCP,3D REPLY shows D AND H,3H shows H AND S,3S reply showsS AND D and 11-13 ,and a reply of 3NT shows a 5carder club suit and 11-13 HCP with any 3325 pattern. After an 8-10 hand is shown openers 3C is a relay and responder shows an outside 4 card suit by bidding it and else bids 3NT.SIR,there is more to all this if one wishes to know .Personally I do not like Meckstroths Precision using GOKHALE transfers as it is far too complicated.

Sir,this problem is faced in all systems in which there is a prepared opening bid'.This applies to all natural systems where 1C which can be 2+ cards in clubs. The same problem is faced when using strong club system whether Blue Club,Roman Club,Leghorn Diamond, various so called Precision systems, where 1D is a prepared bid.Any system (leave alone the conventions and gadgets) which can correctly bid 85% or more of all hands is, in my personal opinion,,an excellent system.Therein lies the charm and excitement in Bridge. One has to describe ones hand as correctly as possible and not deviate in the slightest from the principles of whichever system one is playing. It is futile to think that "if partner holds this and that then one will miss a game or slam".The partner is there very much alive to convey his hand.Hence one must not IMAGINE things irrationally. The less imagined the better.
-
With due respect to HELENE T,I am sorry but I have not come across any strong club system that allows a 4 card Major suit opening that is commonly played today.I am told by my colleague in India that some Bombay players played such-a system known as Bombay Club.Perhaps and perhaps only ,as I don't know,Roman Club might be the one.
-
Sir,we DO NOT PLAY OLD PRECISION just as we do not play Gorens Standard system.Playing Super Precision we will arrive in 6 Clubs very easily .Yes,I know we will get a bottom when playing at MP. and lose a paltry 2/3 IMP.when playing an IMP event.Sir,as regards your second question ,we show clubs and it is a support asking bid.The responders bid will show Kxx support .Controls ask will be answered showing 3 controls and since we have to give up a trick to the missing Ace we will prefer to bid 6C.( and Sir,pardon me but does not one bid a 50% slam?).

Sir.thanks a lot. with respect and regards.Miss Jennifer Jones

Sir,as an exercise we dealt the remaining 39 cards many a times and found that partner almost always had 5+ HCP and the only occasion he did not have them the opponents always came in as it was easy to do so at 1 level.IN short.we never missed any thing.According to the options provided this 21 HCP hands sits only in 1c opening which does indicate a 4+ club suit.Any other bid will mean upgrading the hand or misrepresenting it as a balanced one which I personally feel is not. When playing PRECISION we do not have problem as the 1C opening is forcing for 1 round .

opening 4 of a major 1sr 2nd seat
msjennifer replied to dickiegera's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I am quoting the simple way taught us .The answer is as follows. 1) Open 4C as transfer to hearts and 4D as transfer to spades .The requirements are 10/9/8 WINNERS respectively for unfavourable/equal/favourable vulnerabilities. If the responder visualises /wants to investigate slam possibilities he bids 4D/4H the next step bid to ask for outside Ace.The further bidding has to be developed by the players. We follow cue bids method. Note :the 4C/D bids always have an ace outside the solid trump suit. 2)Open 4H/S when the hand has 9/8/7 WINNERS for the three vulnerabilities as described under 1).The hand CAN, but not necessarily have an outside Ace./King. This method may not be palatable for each and everybody.I do know any book written specifically on this topic. -
If HCP is the sole criterion then 1C is the correct opening followed by 2NT as GF. One has to show the long club suit and as per the options given the only correct bid is 1C.
-
As a matter of fact ,although there is a Qxx support and 13 HCP there are 8 losers and there are no ruffing values allso. The game can be there if S has 6 or less losers. He has not opened 1NT and so if he has a normal 5332 hand and 7 losers 4S may not make.Playing Precision a response of 1NT is .one round forcing followed by 3S the next round.Playing Standard we bid 2D and follow with 2/3/4 S depending on openers rebid.I can not for sure say what will be the bidding by a pair which plays gadget like Gazzilli. In the present South hand there are four losers and the slam will duly be reached. This apart one has to play with the field and so a bid of 2NT by N is quite acceptable as with 13 HCP every other pair is almost certain to bid some game.

An easy single dummy problem similar to GEORGE S COFFINS UNBLOCKING as described in one of his masterpieces "FROM A TO Z"

Multi Level Confusion
msjennifer replied to FelicityR's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I saw the post too late. However, there is nothing wrong to express my thoughts before knowing what partners hand was. This hand is a rather unusual hand which is not easy to find a solution for without prior understanding.I was in full agreement with Felicity albeit with a little reservation. Not playing Lebensohl it remains only a pure guessing game which I try to avoid as far as possible. If over the 2Sxx it would be harder to imagine partners hand had he bid 3H.However after the Club bid I would bid only 5C rather than taking a stab in the dark. as it were. since I don't know what a bid of 4S would be construed as. (there are just 3 losers as played in clubs) .As far as defence to multi is concerned the beginners may read an article written by Eric Crowhurst in our British Briidge Magazine in the June and July 1982 issues under the heading Modern Acol Bidding,Countering The Multi.Therein he has given a development for the NORMALLY occurring hands for the players in 2nd,4th and 6th seat ,and certainly worth giving a thought even today after 36years. -

msjennifer replied to pescetom's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Sir,we shall bid 1D-4H showing an 8 carder suit headed by the Ace and two of the four top honors.Since opener has only three QUICK tricks he will PASS.YES and someday we might lose when partner produces Axxx-K-QJxxx-AQx -
