Balancing when playing with a robot is dangerous [hv=pc=n&s=s76hk3d983cakqj93&d=e&v=n&b=2&a=p1c1ddp2c2dpp]133|200[/hv] Even vulnerable I think most of us will bid 3♣. 2♣=5+♣, 11-15 HCP, 12+ total points And now 3♣ is defined as 6+♣, 15- HCP and 17+ total points Now partner has the following hand [hv=pc=n&n=sq942haq82dt76c62]133|100[/hv] and bids 3♦ showing 7+ HCP and 8 total points. I bid 3N just hoping for the best and went down 6 vulnerable - ouch Now in the replay (It was a robot challenge) my opponent did even worse [hv=url=https://www.bridgebase.com/tools/handviewer.html?bbo=y&lin=pn%7CHuman%2CRobot%2CRobot%2CRobot%7Cst%7C%7Cmd%7C4S76HK3D983CAKQJ93%2CSKT3HJ6DAKQ542CT5%2CSQ942HAQ82DT76C62%2CSAJ85HT9754DJC874%7Csv%7CN%7Cah%7CBoard%202%7Cmb%7CP%7Cmb%7C1C%7Can%7CMinor%20suit%20opening%20--%203%2B%20%21C%3B%2011-21%20HCP%3B%2012-22%20total%20points%7Cmb%7C1D%7Can%7COne-level%20overcall%20--%205%2B%20%21D%3B%208-17%20HCP%3B%209-19%20total%20points%7Cmb%7CD%7Can%7CNegative%20double%20--%204%2B%20%21H%3B%204%2B%20%21S%3B%205%2B%20HCP%3B%206%2B%20total%20points%7Cmb%7CP%7Cmb%7C2C%7Can%7C5%2B%20%21C%3B%203-%20%21H%3B%203-%20%21S%3B%2011-15%20HCP%3B%2012%2B%20total%20points%7Cmb%7C2D%7Can%7C6%2B%20%21D%3B%2017-%20HCP%3B%2012-19%20total%20points%7Cmb%7CP%7Cmb%7CP%7Cmb%7C3C%7Can%7C6%2B%20%21C%3B%203-%20%21H%3B%203-%20%21S%3B%2015-%20HCP%3B%2017%2B%20total%20points%7Cmb%7CP%7Cmb%7C3D%7Can%7C4%2B%20%21H%3B%204%2B%20%21S%3B%207%2B%20HCP%3B%208%20total%20points%3B%20forcing%20to%203N%7Cmb%7CP%7Cmb%7C3H%7Can%7C6%2B%20%21C%3B%203%20%21H%3B%203-%20%21S%3B%2015-%20HCP%3B%2017%2B%20total%20points%3B%20forcing%20to%203N%7Cmb%7CP%7Cmb%7C4H%7Can%7C5%2B%20%21H%3B%204%2B%20%21S%3B%207%2B%20HCP%3B%208%20total%20points%7Cmb%7CP%7Cmb%7C5C%7Can%7CCue%20bid%20--%206%2B%20%21C%3B%203%20%21H%3B%201-3%20%21S%3B%2015-%20HCP%3B%20%21CA%3B%20no%20%21SA%3B%2017%2B%20total%20points%3B%20forcing%7Cmb%7CP%7Cmb%7C5H%7Can%7C2%2B%20%21D%3B%205%2B%20%21H%3B%204%2B%20%21S%3B%208%2B%20HCP%3B%20no%20%21DAK%3B%208-%20total%20points%7Cmb%7CP%7Cmb%7CP%7Cmb%7CP%7Cpc%7CDK%7Cpc%7CD6%7Cpc%7CDJ%7Cpc%7CD3%7Cpc%7CDA%7Cpc%7CD7%7Cpc%7CC4%7Cpc%7CD8%7Cpc%7CDQ%7Cpc%7CDT%7Cpc%7CC8%7Cpc%7CD9%7Cpc%7CC5%7Cpc%7CC2%7Cpc%7CC7%7Cpc%7CCA%7Cpc%7CHK%7Cpc%7CH6%7Cpc%7CH2%7Cpc%7CH7%7Cpc%7CH3%7Cpc%7CHJ%7Cpc%7CH8%7Cpc%7CHT%7Cpc%7CCT%7Cpc%7CC6%7Cpc%7CH9%7Cpc%7CC3%7Cpc%7CS5%7Cpc%7CS6%7Cpc%7CSK%7Cpc%7CS2%7Cpc%7CD4%7Cpc%7CHQ%7Cpc%7CS8%7Cpc%7CS7%7Cpc%7CHA%7Cpc%7CH5%7Cpc%7CC9%7Cpc%7CD5%7Cpc%7CS4%7Cpc%7CSJ%7Cpc%7CCJ%7Cpc%7CS3%7Cpc%7CH4%7Cpc%7CCQ%7Cpc%7CD2%7Cpc%7CS9%7Cpc%7CSA%7Cpc%7CCK%7Cpc%7CST%7Cpc%7CSQ%7C]399|300[/hv] Only way out is 4♣ I think that in this sequence North should have at least (9)10 HCP / Total points to GF

-
Difficult for me to find the actual board, but I remember the bot bidding 4♥ instead of 3N with ♥KTxxx in the same situation, as I was thinking it was a nice (and correct bid) But I must go thru the boards I have played the last 3 weeks :-)
-
Hole in the system or just a bad tooltip?
thorvald replied to thorvald's topic in GIB Robot Discussion
Yes, I think it is a fine rule that a direct cuebid is showing support, but never after a bid in a new suit. Then a cuebid should be asking for more information, probably with focus on stoppers -
[hv=pc=n&n=s5haq853dj85cqt72&d=w&v=b&b=4&a=pp2s2n3s]133|200[/hv] Here the bot decided to bid 3N, but on other occations I have seen the bot bid 4♥ on the same type of hand (ie 5♥431) I wonder if the initial pass might make a difference
-
Without ♠A or K, how could West have a T/O double of 1♣? So is the bot trusting opponents bidding more than partners?
-
[hv=pc=n&s=saq7hkt653dq97ca5&d=n&v=0&b=1&a=1c1d1hp1np]133|200[/hv] Now it would be interesting to show a 5+♥ with forcing values, or in some way check if opener has a 3-card support, but the bids shows the following 2♣=Retreat from NT 2♦=5+♣ and 4+♥, forcing to 3N 2♥=Retreat from NT 2♠=4+♠, 5+♥, forcing to 3N 2N=4♥, 11-12 HCP 3♣=5+♣, 4+♥ 3♦=2-suited bar bid, 6+♦, 4♥ 3♥=6+♥, invitational 3♠=Same as 2♠ :-) 3N=4+♥, 17- HCP the 2♦ is strange and 3♦ just looks odd, but it seems that I should either show 5+♣ or 4+♠. Lets try with 2♠ as opener has denied 4♠ That got us to the normal 4♥

When simulation the West hand on this deal [hv=url=https://www.bridgebase.com/tools/handviewer.html?bbo=y&lin=pn%7CRobot%2CRobot%2CRobot%2CRobot%7Cst%7C%7Cmd%7C1sakj6hat83dqj6cq5%2Cs985hq52da974c876%2Csq3hkj7dkt2cak943%2Cst742h964d853cjt2%7Crh%7C%7Cah%7Cboard%203%7Csv%7Ce%7Cmb%7C1n%7Can%7Cnotrump%20opener.%20could%20have%205m.%20--%202-5%20%21c%3B%202-5%20%21d%3B%202-5%20%21h%3B%202-5%20%21s%3B%2015-17%20hcp%3B%2018-%20total%20points%7Cmb%7Cp%7Cmb%7C4n%7Can%7Cquantitative%20invite%20to%206nt%20--%202-5%20%21c%3B%202-5%20%21d%3B%202-4%20%21h%3B%202-4%20%21s%3B%2016-17%20hcp%7Cmb%7Cp%7Cmb%7C6n%7Can%7C2-5%20%21c%3B%202-5%20%21d%3B%202-5%20%21h%3B%202-5%20%21s%3B%2017%20hcp%3B%2018-%20total%20points%7Cmb%7Cp%7Cmb%7Cp%7Cmb%7Cp%7Cpc%7Cda%7Cpc%7Cd2%7Cpc%7Cd3%7Cpc%7Cd6%7Cpc%7Ch5%7Cpc%7Ch7%7Cpc%7Ch9%7Cpc%7Cht%7Cpc%7Cs6%7Cpc%7Cs5%7Cpc%7Csq%7Cpc%7Cs7%7Cpc%7Cc9%7Cpc%7Cc2%7Cpc%7Ccq%7Cpc%7Cc6%7Cpc%7Ch8%7Cpc%7Ch2%7Cpc%7Chk%7Cpc%7Ch6%7Cpc%7Cs3%7Cpc%7Cs4%7Cpc%7Csa%7Cpc%7Cs9%7Cpc%7Cc5%7Cpc%7Cc8%7Cpc%7Cca%7Cpc%7Ccj%7Cpc%7Cdt%7Cpc%7Cd5%7Cpc%7Cdq%7Cpc%7Cd9%7Cpc%7Cdj%7Cpc%7Cd7%7Cpc%7Cdk%7Cpc%7Cd8%7Cpc%7Cck%7Cpc%7Cct%7Cpc%7Ch3%7Cpc%7Cc7%7Cpc%7Cc4%7Cpc%7Cs2%7Cpc%7Csk%7Cpc%7Cs8%7Cpc%7Cc3%7Cpc%7Ch4%7Cpc%7Csj%7Cpc%7Cd4%7Cpc%7Chj%7Cpc%7Cst%7Cpc%7Cha%7Cpc%7Chq%7C]399|300[/hv] I know that using double dummy analysis declarer will always find ♥Q, so this might be one of the situations where all plays are losing, so it really doesn't matter. But still I suspect there are som rules about how to select a random card :-) Switching ♣Q and J and the ♥-shift might be giving away the contract

Opponents cannot play undoubled below 2N
thorvald replied to thorvald's topic in GIB Robot Discussion
Seems there should be added rules for what to do after a penalty double, and they run :-) I wonder if raising it a level (from 2♣ to 3♣) also will confuse the robots -
I think 3N should more be described as slaminvitational with 6+♣ and HCP is not right to use when there 6+ card suits involved Poll I think the hand lack controls for making an invitation, but introducing a better way of counting, when slammish is probably never gonna happen :-)

Now when simulating this I assume the bot places 5♠ in south, but I have seen the Robots frequently overcall on 4-card majors (But haven't found the rule for doing it), so how is the actual simulation done?

How can it be right to keep xx in clubs
thorvald replied to thorvald's topic in GIB Robot Discussion
Yes, it would be a great improvement to stop simulation in the 4-card ending. It would be possible to calculate all combinations, and then select a discard among the ones where it would matter. On the actual hand the reasoning that south should have 25+ HCP is flawed as soon as North has shown 7+♥ but that is probably to difficult to implement -
In this sequence GIB bid 5♥ Poll As you can see from my comment in the poll: The interesting problem is that 4th suit forcing can either be A: A hand with 5♥s - but wouldn't that hand just bid 4♥ now? B: A doubt showing 3N, then 4♣ would problably be our bid C: A hand to strong for 3N directly after 2♣. Then we just want to play 3N. What are the rules GIB is following?

I have seen this in multiple situations, where the Bot passes the second T/O Double. Looking at the explanation for the second T/O, it looks like often there is just added an Ace (4 hcp), and that could be right, if at the same time the max no of cards in the suit is reduced by 1, then the simulation by North might be more correct
-
Have you decrypted the rules? I have had a look at your sample, but it is difficult to relate that rule to the 3♣ bid
-
Yes, 2N is not Lebensohl, but just a transfer to ♣. I agree, that North is showing a slam try and that is also what the explanation shows. I am just having difficulties find all the promised values (13-15 HCP) on the hand. Now the entire story behind the hand is it was played in a Robot challenge. I was playing against a player, that I know will often open 1N on off-beat hands like [hv=pc=n&s=sahaj76djt954ckj9]133|100[/hv] so I also opened 1N After 3N I decided that West probably had ♠, so ♣ would play better. I should probably have bid 5♣ over 4N, but as usual I was a bit optimistic. Result 3 down Now back at my opponent, that as expected opened 1N, but decided that 3N was better than 5/6♣ The result: [hv=url=https://www.bridgebase.com/tools/handviewer.html?bbo=y&lin=pn%7CHuman%2CRobot%2CRobot%2CRobot%7Cst%7C%7Cmd%7C4SAHAJ76DJT954CKJ9%2CSQJT95432HK9D3CA3%2CSKHQT4DK76CQ76542%2CS876H8532DAQ82CT8%7Csv%7CN%7Cah%7CBoard%202%7Cmb%7CP%7Cmb%7C1N%7Can%7Cnotrump%20opener.%20Could%20have%205M.%20--%202-5%20%21C%3B%202-5%20%21D%3B%202-5%20%21H%3B%202-5%20%21S%3B%2015-17%20HCP%3B%2018-%20total%20points%7Cmb%7C2C%21%7Can%7CCappelletti%20-%20single%20suited%20--%2014-%20HCP%3B%2010%2B%20total%20points%7Cmb%7C2N%21%7Can%7CMinor%20transfer%20--%206%2B%20%21C%7Cmb%7CP%7Cmb%7C3C%7Can%7CTransfer%20completed%20--%202-5%20%21C%3B%202-5%20%21D%3B%202-5%20%21H%3B%202-5%20%21S%3B%2015-17%20HCP%3B%2018-%20total%20points%7Cmb%7CP%7Cmb%7C3N%7Can%7C6%2B%20%21C%3B%2013-15%20HCP%7Cmb%7CP%7Cmb%7CP%7Cmb%7CP%7Cpc%7CSQ%7Cpc%7CSK%7Cpc%7CS6%7Cpc%7CSA%7Cpc%7CCJ%7Cpc%7CCA%7Cpc%7CC2%7Cpc%7CC8%7Cpc%7CSJ%7Cpc%7CH4%7Cpc%7CS8%7Cpc%7CD4%7Cpc%7CS9%7Cpc%7CHT%7Cpc%7CS7%7Cpc%7CD5%7Cpc%7CST%7Cpc%7CHQ%7Cpc%7CH5%7Cpc%7CH6%7Cpc%7CS5%7Cpc%7CD6%7Cpc%7CH2%7Cpc%7CH7%7Cpc%7CS4%7Cpc%7CC4%7Cpc%7CH8%7Cpc%7CHJ%7Cpc%7CS2%7Cpc%7CD7%7Cpc%7CH3%7Cpc%7CCK%7Cpc%7CS3%7Cpc%7CDK%7Cpc%7CCT%7Cpc%7CD9%7Cpc%7CD3%7Cpc%7CC5%7Cpc%7CDA%7Cpc%7CDT%7Cpc%7CDQ%7Cpc%7CDJ%7Cpc%7CC3%7Cpc%7CC6%7Cpc%7CD8%7Cpc%7CC9%7Cpc%7CHK%7Cpc%7CC7%7Cpc%7CD2%7Cpc%7CHA%7Cpc%7CH9%7Cpc%7CCQ%7C]400|400[/hv] On the run of the ♠s declarer got pseudo squeezed so the result was 8 down :-)

I think this deal illustrates one of the problems with bot bidding, simply the lack of reasoning in the bidding. All need to be defined [hv=url=https://www.bridgebase.com/tools/handviewer.html?lin=st||pn|Thorvald,~~M28291,~~M28289,~~M28290|md|2SKJ8HK3DK83CAQJT3,S3HATDAQ9752CK876,SAQT96HQ62DJ64C95,S7542HJ98754DTC42|sv|o|rh||ah|Board%208|mb|1D|an|Minor%20suit%20opening%20--%203+%20!D;%2011-21%20HCP;%2012-22%20total%20points%20|mb|1S|an|One-level%20overcall%20--%205+%20!S;%208-17%20HCP;%209-19%20total%20points%20|mb|P|mb|2D!|an|Good%20support%20in%20S%20--%203+%20!S;%2010+%20total%20points|mb|D|an|11-21%20HCP;%20rebiddable%20!D;%20!DKQ;%2012-22%20total%20points%20|mb|P|mb|P|mb|3N!|an|5-%20!H;%203-5%20!S;%2017-24%20HCP;%20likely%20stop%20in%20!D|mb|P|mb|4S|an|5+%20!S;%208-17%20HCP;%209-19%20total%20points%20|mb|P|mb|P|mb|P|pc|DT|pc|D3|pc|DQ|pc|D4|pc|DA|pc|D6|pc|C4|pc|DK|pc|D7|pc|DJ|pc|S5|pc|D8|pc|H5|pc|H3|pc|HA|pc|H2|pc|S3|pc|S6|pc|S7|pc|S8|pc|SK|pc|C8|pc|SA|pc|S4|pc|SQ|pc|S2|pc|SJ|pc|D2|pc|C9|pc|C2|pc|C3|pc|CK|pc|C6|pc|C5|pc|H4|pc|CT|mc|8|]399|300[/hv] 3N can only be a suggestion to play and with a normal 5332 (and even a stopping value in ♦) there is absolutely no reason to bid 4♠ My guess is that after showing a 3-card-support we can never stop in 3N (Might be the same reason after 1Ma-3N, where the bot almost always remove to 4Ma) Traveller A direct bid of 3N or bidding 2♣ followed by 3N is the key here, but how can we know 3N is the right contract :-)
-
I just checked the hand against a 2N-opening, and now the bot will bid 4♦ (5+♦, 11-20 total points) after the 3♦-response, so it could be a generic rule overriding the 2N system
-
[hv=pc=n&n=s53haq43dqt7643ck&d=e&v=e&b=6&a=p2cd2dp2np3cp3dp7dppp]133|200[/hv] The explanation to 7♦ is 6+♦ and 13+ total points Now I assume that the bot knows we have a ♦-fit, so it can add 1 point for the doubleton ♠, and 3 points for singleton ♣, but then there shuold be deducted some for the singleton ♣. Now the other bots just cashed the ♣A, making me think there should be some kind of ace checking before bidding a grand with 36+ total points

As far as I know BBO owns the GIB-software and is maintaining it - well at least they have released a new version back in 2018.
