  1. Dhoni has proved himself as a great leader.Well done India .
  2. OK I got it The valiant knight can go on a suicide mission any which way he wants :) Let me post one . The Grandmaster walked into the chess club .Grandmaster disdainfully said, "I will take white. My first 4 moves are 1)f3 2)Kf2 3) Kg3 4)kh4 You as black may play whatever you want to.100 dollar bet." For once the grandmaster lost as black checkmated him on his 4th move. How?
  3. [hv=pc=n&n=sahat6dkj853c8743&d=n&v=b&b=13&a=1dp1hp2cp2sp3hp4cp]133|200[/hv] System 2/1 .By 2 ♣ rebid opener has shown 5/4 either way in minors 2♠ is FSF to Game .Your priority is to show 3 card support .So your P now knows you have 1-3-(5 4) shape and 12-17 hcp. Your cc includes minorwood and cue bids, Q.1) What is 4♣? cue bid or miorwood? Q.2) If responder had bid 3♠ instead of 4 ♣ is he still looking for a stopper or cue bidding for a ♥ contract? Q.3) In either of the cases can opener assume a 5-3 or better fit in ♥?
  4. Are you sure the problem is stated correctly? It seems to imply that a white knight a black knight and 2 black pawns have been captured. A very similar problem I had come across was "Two patzers were playing a game of chess. After black's 4th move , a white knight and a black knight had been captured, a black pawn was on d5 and all other pieces were on their original squares. What could have been the sequence of the moves?
  5. Seems to me that 1 is actually simpler .Make rules and stick to them.Beginner to advanced would do well to follow this IMO. If and when one reaches expert level and gets an expert partner rule 2 takes over.It is after all not so easy to work out whether a signal is needed or not.I recall reading somewhere that Belladonna and Garozzo never signaled except in hold up situations.
  6. While I think I can can work out what sort of hand should double (Short ♠ with a ♦honor?) I cant figure out what sort of hand should bid 5 spades.( no A K; 3+ spades with short ♣ or ♥? ) Could you help?
  7. I guess the number of people who open on clearcut passers is equal to the people who pass clearcut openers , if not more. Especially 3rd hand Many of us open on clearcut passers.
  8. 2♠ if thats forcing otherwise dbl if opener rebids ♣ then exclusion 5♦.The auction will depend on level of interference in diamonds.
  9. I think the OP is implying opener should have rebid ♦.As others have pointed out even with AQx in ♦ and xxx in ♣ it is correct to rebid 2♣ to a response of forcing NT.Length matters and with equal length, ♣is the proper rebid.
  10. When was beach volleyball invented?
  11. "I am looking to play this within the context of a rather old-fashioned precision. My 1C shows 16hcp+ therefore I am thinking that Opener needs to be 22hcp+ to make the slam try and will mostly be signing off in somekind of game: 3N/4H/4S/5C/5D rather than playing for slam. Likewise my unusual positive responder will need to take up the baton and move onto slam if he has more than his minimum 8hcp. I guess that would be easy enough he could Gerber over 3N and RKB 1430 over a suit and perhaps cuebid. Do you think this sounds viable? Your comments are much sought." If you play power precision scheme then 1♣ opener takes all the decisions .Sometimes with the same info different people would take different decisions. To illustrate the point here is an example.Yesterday i played in an imp pairs tournament where the following hand turned up.[hv=pc=n&s=sa852h6dk974cq852&n=sqjt97h85daqj8cak&d=n&v=0&b=1&a=1cp3dp3hp4cp6sppp]266|200[/hv] I was South 1♣=16+ 3♦=9+hcp 4-1-4-4 shape 3♥=asking controls 4♣=3 controls i.e. 1A+2K OR 3K After 3♦ N who has only 17 hcp asked for controls. The response told him P has 1A and 1K.So S could have 1) ♠AK or ♠k and ♥A in which case slam depends on ♦finesse or 2) ♠A and ♦K in which case slam depends on ♠finesse and a ♠ break not worse than 3-1 or 3) ♥A and ♦K in which case slam has no chance. My P decided to bid slam I wouldn't have. But then he is a colonel in the indian army and i am a school teacher. :)
  12. A king is considered 1 control, Ace is 2 controls .Thus to begin with there are 12 controls in the pack.If both hands are balanced you need 9 or more controls to make a slam feasible. If one of the hands is having a singleton then 8 should be sufficient. When Opener bids responders singleton the next step is 1 control second 2 controls and so on Thus if the bidding goes 1 Club-2S(club singleton)-3Clubs 3 Diamond is 1 king 3 Heart is 2 kings or 1 ace etc.The singleton king is not counted. If Opener makes a grand slam try by bidding responder's singleton (or if responder has shown 5 controls then by bidding singleton or cheapest NT) Then the responses are 0 Q : cheapest NT 1-2 : suit of cheapest queen (followup of stiff or cheapest NT ask for more queens.) 3 : bid your stiff. Singleton Q is not counted. If responder has 4-4-4-1 without a control then responder bids 1 Diamond even if having 9+ hcp. If you are serious about power precision then refer to http://www.bridgewithdan.com/systems/ If you are more serious take a look at Viking Club elucidated on same site.
  13. I suggest a simpler experiment .From the forum posters Lets select 4 excellent card players who have never played as partners and let them start with sayc without any further discussion .Let us select 2 pairs of volunteers who have often played together as partners and who believe they have a very good bidding system but whose card play is not in the same league as our excellent card players.Let them play a 32 deal match. The result could be interesting.
  14. Power precision suggests 2♥=1-4-4-4 2♠= 4-4-4-1 3♣=4-4-1-4 and 3♦=4-1-4-4 Now opener can bid responder's singleton to find number of controls and quickly decide whether a slam or grand slam are possible. If the number of controls add up to suggest a Grand, Opener can rebid the singleton or nearest NT to find out about Queens.
  15. You may add the systems given in the following books. 1) Power Precision ( By Alan Sontag) 2) Goren Precision (By Charles Goren ) 3) Viking Precision (BY Glenn Grotheim , Barry Rigal , Alan Sontag )
  16. I enjoyed and benefited from both the lessons. Most of Larry's lesson would be easily understood by most intermediates. The false carding motif in the second deal would be appreciated by 'advanced ' intermediates and above. Fred's lesson dealt with a more complex hand .I liked the interactive component of Fred's lesson where he gave the listener/viewer an opportunity to test himself. I eagerly look forward to the next installment.
  17. Hi Cardboy I am from Thane .I have the 3 books you mention .I run a bridge library where the membership is free but to ensure i get the book back i charge a deposit of Rs 500 per book.If you are interested email me. If you want to buy bridge books try Strand Book Stall . If you want to join a regular library which has a large collection of bridge books go to british council library, Nariman Point.Kanga Sports library ,Garware Club House ,Wankhede Stadium used to stock a fair collection of bridge books and used be open to Public .I do not know if it still functions.
  18. I bid 1 ♣.Partner can have maximum 12 hcp minimum 0 if both opponents are ultra conservative bidders or have miscounted.Since I am told P is an expert I discount the possibility that HE might have miscounted.
  19. I wrongly voted u r rt.The actually probability of precisely 2-4-2-5 seems to be 6.3% and the combined probability of other 7 events 93.7% .This is so because as cherdano points out the probabilities of all 8 events is is not same.If you make 8 slips and write out these combinations and pick up any one slip then your number would be rt because the probability of any one slip being picked up is same. But here all the events do not have same probability of occuring.
  20. [hv=pc=n&s=sq7hdakq4ckqt9843]133|100[/hv] West dealer .Bidding goes P-P-1♥-? Q.1 Do you dbl or bid 2♣ Q.2 Suppose your agreement with partner is dbl with any 15 + hcp hand which does not have stopper in rho's suit;so you dbl. p-p-1♥-dbl p-1♠(8 or less)-p-2♣ P-2♠-p-? You pass? Or bid 3♣ or any other bid?
  21. Thank you all for your replies We consider an 8-9 hcp as invitational and a 5-5-2-1 hand (M/m) with 8-9 hcp would rebid 2NT. If P prefers M then responder would take a shot at game. With 10+ and 5-5 (M/m) responder would show 2nd suit Cascade and gwnn have also hinted that there are better method/s available.Would be grateful if they could elaborate on the alternative method.
  22. [hv=pc=n&s=sajt5hq73dk63ckqt]133|100[/hv] You open 1NT P transfers to ♥and then bids 3NT.In your system you do not show a 4 card minor unless you have slam ambition. So P can be 5-4-3-1. Q.1 Will you prefer 3 NT or 4 Hearts with this particular hand? Q.2 Will you always bid the same way with any hand that has an 8 card fit in major but 4-3-3-3 pattern? Q.3 Will the method of scoring make a difference? (IMPs Mps or Total points ) Will be grateful if the reasoning behind your response is given.
  23. 2♥= ♥and another suit 5-5 less than opening Pass if playing with a p who does not play the above convention.
  24. Well said sir.I like this post.An honest fair opinion with a touch of good humor which everyone can appreciate.
