zasanya replied to Lord Molyb's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion

The holidays were over long ago. The fun a few days ago. Where is the moderator?

Almost everyone agrees double is not support double. Thank you all but now some more questions. 1) After 'take out/ value showing double' or pass what should S do? Jump to 4♥? 2) If S does jump to 4 ♥do you think NS can reach the reasonable slam? 3) I think it's a reasonable slam . Do you agree? -

the weak 2 strikes
zasanya replied to zasanya's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I must add here that most people play lebensohl after a weak 2 double. In the version that I and my P play 3♠ would deny a ♠ stopper and confirm 4 card of ♥and Game Force. So lebensohl was a liability here? -

I may add here that i bid a wimpy 3nt. The hand was played on 42 tables with players ranging from national stars to LOLs . On 4 other tables the hand was played in 3 NT 2 tables played in 4H one in 4NT and one 2 Sx. As far as I could ascertain 2 S was bid only on these tables.Only 2 pairs reached 7 diamonds. One of them was the pair playing on the last table in this swiss pairs event. Your comments much appreciated. -

On partnership bidding table you can set up various parameters for shape and combined hcp etc.You cannot do that with teaching table. So I vote for mr1303.

Leads against Notrump
zasanya replied to barmar's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
With apologies to David Bird Source: http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/index.php?app=forums&module=post§ion=post&do=reply_post&f=1&t=56698 Improve Your Opening Leads (Part 2) Originally published in the March & April 2009 issues of the ACBL Bridge Bulletin ......... There’s a story from the 1960s about an expert who published an article titled “Why third and fifth leads are better” in a major bridge magazine. It featured many examples of the problems with standard fourth-best leads and showed how they could be solved by leading third and fifth from length. The writer was regaled with praise from enlightened readers who said they had always known standard leads were inferior, and now they had proof. The following month, the expert published another article titled “Why fourth-best leads are better”. It offered the same number of examples and equally compelling evidence that third and fifth leads were confusing and ineffective. This story is probably a bridge “urban legend”, as the articles can’t be located, but it’s easy to understand how they could have been written. Many players will offer fervent arguments about the merits of their favorite lead conventions, but don’t believe anyone who claims one method is clearly superior to all others. Whatever leading scheme you choose, the only critical issues are that you and partner feel comfortable with it and have clear agreements about which card you’ll lead from all possible suit holdings. -
♥Q may not set up a trick but least likely to give away a trick.

1♣-1♥-2♥-3NT if responder is 4-3-3-3. Opener will convert if he has ruffing value. 1♣-1♠-2♠-3NT as above 1♦-1M-2M-as above 1NT-with 4-3-3-3 responder bids 3nt. Cant think of other auctions which meet conditions given in OP.

Lead was spade5.[/hv] This was the actual hand. I was North. My suggestion to P was to give 6-1-5-1 or 5-1-5-2 hand to rho so after spade lead he could win in dummy come to hand with H Ace and finesse club jack and discard diamonds on club AK.! Although the line works in the actual layout I can see much better lines have been suggested by others especially codo and mikeh. Thank you gentlemen. My other suggestion to partner was that in similar situations where opponents show a 2 suiter, double should mean strength in at least one of the suits shown by opponents. Since no one has suggested it, probably the idea doesn't have merit. Thank you all.

North South were playing 2/1 . Opening Lead was ♠ 5. Q. 1 Do you agree with opener's rebid of 3♥? If not then what do you suggest? Q. 2 Do you think N had enough to look for a slam? Q. 3 If you are declarer how will you play this hand in 5 ♥? Thanks in advance.

. If D.O.T shuts down the road, then we log on to BBO and play bridge or log onto BBF and laugh a lot !! Some of the responses by some of the posters on BBF suggest laughter? I think not. :P

2♦ for me . A question for those who always bid 1♠ with this or similar hands. Do you or your regular partner alert it?

Is it not possible to consider the quality of opposition while assigning some score as is done when calculating elo ratings?

East who believed that with 9+ hcp he must try to find a bid to balance, doubled. This allowed NS to have another bite at the cherry and they reached 4 Hearts making 2 overtricks. On the other table east passed so this was 7 imps for the team that did not balance. Questions 1) Is it correct to try to find a balancing bid with 9+ hcp? 2) If the answer to the above question is yes then Is this hand an exception for some reason? 3) If east decides to balance which bid is better dbl or 2♣? 4) An issue unrelated to balancing. Is South hand a 2 ♣ opener?

The most common usage seems to be michaels is a cue bid made at 2 level to show both majors or other major and minor while Western cue bid is a cue bid made at 3 level to ask for a stopper and shows a running minor. Refer http://www.bridgebum.com/western_cue_bid.php http://www.bridgebum.com/michaels_cuebid.php Other reference sites also support this contention.

He entered dummy with ♦ ace and played ♣ King and pitched a ♦ on the ♣. He then cashed the King of ♠ and played a low ♠ from the dummy and inserted the J. South had anticipated that declarer would play ♠ Ace and he was ready with ♠ 7 which he intended to play .He took the ♠ 7 brought it down towards table with the intention of playing it and then noticed Declarer had played Jack .The ♠ 7 was seen by all the other three players on the table South did not place ♠ 7 on the table. He took the card back and played the Queen of spades. At this time the director was called and the director ruled that since all the three players had seen the card, the small card must be played. The ruling was accepted and declarer went on to make 4H while the same contracted was defeated in the other table. I was declarer and South is a good friend .He has sent me an email .I quote "on going through the rules of WBF on exposed cards i found this When a card is exposed by one of defenders (law 50), by means of holding it in such a position that it can be plausibly seen by the offender's partner, in general, it becomes a penalty card. If exposed inadvertently, depending on its rank, it may be a minor (2-9) or a major (10-A) penalty card; however, any card may become a major penalty card if played out of turn. In any case, the penalty card must be played at first legal opportunity, which allows the declarer to organize his play to take advantage of the situation. However, the offender may play an honor of the same suit instead of the minor penalty card. There is no penalty whatsoever for the exposition of declarer's cards, provided it was played inadvertently (a card apparently played advertently may not be retracted except for the purpose of revoke correction). If a card is exposed during the auction (law 24), it may become a penalty card, and offender's partner may be forced to pass to the end of auction. I hope this clarifies the situation i.e even though my small spades which my partner had seen becomes a penalty card i can play an honor in the same suit which i did and was dissallowed.which according to this rule was a wrong ruling. Please advise. Warm regards Aniruddha

The most aggressive/ optimist lead is club. The most passive lead is heart .And the most effective lead is diamond . Strange isn't it?

Double without the other major?
zasanya replied to gwnn's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
If you value your partnership you should accept partner's suggestion. If I had such a partner I would tell him "I do not like the idea. I have been playing a double promises at least 3 cards in other suits and usually suggests 4 cards in the other major for so many years but I am willing to experiment in practice games." If the idea has merit it will yield reasonable results. If the results are bad I think I could convince my partner to drop it. Reminds me that my partner once told me that 1 NT overcall should be like a takeout double and show 3 cards in other 3 suits. He had downloaded some " overcall structure " from net. I agreed . The first time we used it we lost 1100 (NV ! ) . We decided to drop the idea . Ultimately whether the idea has merit or not will be decided by results.:D
