It's amaze me how no one here, (almost as it was in the Israeli forum) see this as I did. When there is such a hesitation, the director must link between the hesitation and a certain logical alternative in order to consider it. Here however 5S after hearing that partner has 4 key cards, is by itself (with or without hesitation) giving the following message: 1.Although we only miss 0 or 1 key card which is usually a must bid slam after rkcb, i still after checking the odds of the slam think that its not good and settle for 5S. I don't know of any hand that will ask for key cards and even though missing only 1 key card will not considering bidding the slam. So 5S gave by itself the message I considered slam, and the hesitation didn't therefore give any additional information. There is no link between the 6S logical alternative and the hesitation.

I think the interesting question should be what to bid with a defensive minimum hand without a trump stack. say A10XXX K9X AJX 10X should double show this hand, or double should serious defense ? if double shows great defense then can we pass with the example hand allowing partner to express his opinion on the partnership ODR ?

pass is forcing here.

The Misadventures of Rex and Jay--#5746

pass as first hand, but unlike what was posted before me, just as easy pass as third hand. -
what do these bids show
WGF_Flame replied to WGF_Flame's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Let me clear a point, If the opponents were bidding spades, I had much less question, but since they have bid Hearts, we have many doubts. 1. should 4NT be possible with the spade suit ? wouldn't this hand rather bid 4S ? 2.5H - since its still below 5S, wouldn't it make sense to play it as some invitational spade hand ? -

What is the meaning of this 1-2-3 stop ? -

advance after 2level ovrcall

We didn't discussed this in details but we agreed to play rubensohl here from 2NT up which might give a good solution to this problem. -
This is not forcing.

You as south holds Q76 10763 AKQJ9 K Norse open the bidding with 1♠ (oponents pass all the way) You bid 2♦ and norse rebid 2♥ What do you bid now and why ? I'll show norse's hand and the actual bidding at the 2 tables later.

Why won't they play the last trump?
WGF_Flame replied to lenze's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
You have high expectations of your students. I know ppl who play 30 years and wouldnt know to play the last trump here. -
70% for south and 15% for north. 15% bad luck. north hand can and as other said should bid more but not easy. on the other hand with south hand its easier. try to build hands for north with enough points and ull see that with nearly all of them 3sp is safe and there is a good chance for 4sp with good north hand.

I am not saying there is no point in playing 4d as forcing, sure there is a point to it and u have just explained it very well, still imo it is more vital as an invitational bid. one more resson to play this as invitational is that its a bad abit to give different meaning to more or less same bids, by this i mean that it is not a good idea to play that 3c 3d p 4d will be forcing while 2h 3d p 4d to be invitational, and also to give different interpertations to scoring type (mp/imp) and to vul . this will make it much harder on your memory , so even if i fould it a bit better (which i dont) in a specific case to play 4d forcing that still not a good resson to load more information on my memory. The memory statment is general not about this specific case. Simple is not Stupid.

I am not sure at all that 3nt here is better then 3d. but just in case put the A of clubs in spades instead. Even put the club ace in spade suit and you have not club stopper, with this hand 3N is still a much better bid in long run. Yes, you may lose 13 tricks. But as 3N is the most likely game and with such a strong hand without major suit, you should try to bid 3N. This decision is somewhat related to the vul., though. As when Opp are green, 3C can be very broke suit, but when they are red, 3C can be akqxxx. You are wrong. Bidding 3nt here would be a mistake. 3D is not a weak bid and there is a good chance that p with a stoper will bid 3nt himself which then will be played from the right side and make.

that hand was just an example of a strong hand, maybe i shoudlnt have given examples cause it take u out of the point, which is there is a large range of hands which will overcall 3d here, the space is very limited and in this situation i prefer to use this space to check for game rather then have more more tool for slam bidding. therefore 4d imo should be an invitation to game rather then forcing.

I disagee with the most here. (including better players then i) 3D has a long range of hands. Id bid 3D with XX AXX AKQXX AXXX and maybe stronger hands. but also with XX XXX AKQXXXX XX and maybe weaker hands. for this resson i dont think 4d should not be forcing, i would pass 4d with a minimum hand cue bid with a stronger hand. there is an easy 4c to show stronger hands.

If you only look at this suit, its 2 to 1 for playing small (not the 10) [and thats my play] But its good to be aware of one thing that eat the gap between those two line's precentage. Lets say the bidding went 1nt 3nt , west leading a 4 card suit, this suppose to be his best suit, now there is a better chance that QJxx will be a best suit then J9XX or Q9XX , this resson is even stronger if we are talking about a minor suit, or we have other ressons to suspect the leader having other good leading options.

I know this dilema of playing for training from other games i played, and as it is here, it felt out of place, because we were there playing not working, but i think its a good thing and the initial feeling is just because its still new. at the end it will make better teachers and better players.

why didnt u bid 5h to ask for the Q of spade ?
-
Unless u play good/bad 2nt here , which mean that 3cl is good, you should bid 3d instead of 3club.
-
2/1 GF - ur 2nt is ovious and 3sp is oviosly GF showing 6 card suit. syac - i would still bid 2nt, because i dont like the hand too much, 5-2 spades and 4-3 hearts, still with half a point more u would have to find another bid because 2nt isnt forcing, probebly 3cl 4th suit forcing. i spades show 6 spades, i dont think it is forcing here, but u still have to bid 4sp. (dont think of biding 3nt if u want to keep playing with this partner a club lead will come and it might be nasty.

Hehe, Free, even you put a gun at my head I wont open it:) 1sp is good using zar points. I would be happy to open it , but wouldnt if it would make p unhappy. Actually, by ZAR points this is a 25 point hand, not a 26 point hand. So it would be a point shy by ZAR standards. with Zar point you open 25 zar points with spades.

Not exactly. 2h doesnt promiss 5 card hearts . the different between D and 2h is that D is more defensive oriented while 2h is more offensive oriented, yes for that resson 2h will have 5 hearts many times, and double will never have 5 hearts. also when u double you give p the option to leave this double with a suitable hand, this mean u should try not to double if leaving it would be a disaster. also double leave the option to p to bid 2d. this is the "normal" way to play it, but doesnt have to be the best.
