What is wrong with IE? I have never had a problem.

Justin, I am posting the link to D20's Conditions of Contest. I know they have been negotiated extensively the past several years with our open flight players and they seem pretty happy with the setup. Of course we don't have the depth of talent that D16 has. But looking at different CoC's might give you some perspective. Jo Anne http://acbld20.org/lbc/NA_Events/D20_GNT_CoC.pdf

I attended the recent Medford Regional and we used the BridgemateII machines which are nice and most people are happy with them once they use them for a few hands. But my wonderful surprise came the next morning at breakfast when I went to the District 20 website with my iPad to look at the results (which are posted late every night). The usual winners were there posted from ACBLscore, but now the travelers at the bottom include the actual hands, the players names, the actual contracts played and result, and the matchpoints. What an enhancement to tournament play. Also, kudos to the D20 webmaster for posting the results every night.

I was in a similar situation, being in 4th seat and I already had the jack out and ready to lay on the table when the call was changed. This was at a Sectional and the Director (a new one) allowed the change. Upon checking later with the DIC I was told the ruling was wrong. Actually the hand became quite a discussion in some director forum that they have. Not realizing that the 10 is not in sequence with the KQ is lack of concentration for which there should not be a remedy.

Chris, congratulations on your GNT win yesterday!!! Good luck in New Orleans! Jo Anne (Sorry off-topic) ;)

Have you seen Julie and Julia? A wonderful movie about cooking. I have two relatives who are brilliant chefs, graduates of culinary institututes, and neither of them can hold a job long because they are so "tempermental". Having to create recipes under someone else must be like having to paint under someone else's direction. I think there is a time and a place for "living to eat" and "eating to live". Like right now at a bridge tournament where in four days I am going to manage one really fine meal (last night) and the rest just whatever comes along, like tonight at the District board meeting. lol

Having been both a club owner and Unit president I have a few observations. First, the club and the Unit are separate entities, neither having jurisdiction over the other, unless the Unit happens to own the club. Second, a club owner/manager can ban a player without stated reason as long as there is no discrimination involved. ACBL must be notified of the ban and the player is still allowed to play in any Unit games that are held at that club. I can't imagine someone being banned or suspended without a stated reason. Usually there is a letter telling them they have been bad - causing people to quit the club, whatever. I also can't imagine banning or suspending someone just because one player turns in a list of grievances. However, when there is a problem player there is rarely just one person complaining. If everyone is happy with a certain player and only one person has a problem with them then there may be other issues at hand. The proper procedure, in a club, is, if you have not seen adequate action from the director go directly to the club manager. In a club, management is who makes the decisions about who does and does not play.

This is off topic but I once had a tournament director tell me he had to go out in the hall, stop laughing, and then come back and give a ruling at our table. We were playing natural overcalls against nt and I had two 2-card suits and bid one of them. Opponent wanted an adjustment because I had a double suited hand.

I resent the implication that anytime I have committed an infraction in bridge it was because I "could not be bothered to follow the rules". I have never intentionally committed an infraction in my life. (I am using (I) to include the average bridge player.)

Off-shape doubles are not alertable in ACBL, although there is a place to mark them on the convention card. 12hcp is not that light for a takeout double, I have seen a lot worse, no one is vul and his partner is a passed hand.

I think of threads as conversations, which I assume you carry on with people or groups of people. Conversations wander or progress. I don't think it is unusual at all. If you only talk to people in one word questions and answers then I guess you are right.

Or, maybe this scenario might come up, declarer is in his hand and knows his card is a loser so he calls for the card in dummy which is good, and the opponents don't notice. But then later they overhear declarer bragging to his partner about the coup he pulled off...... Or maybe they do notice, can Director ask declarer if it was done on purpose?

Misleading TD NAME ( ACBL ) cost me $
JoAnneM replied to klidescope's topic in BBO Tournament Directors Forum
If ACBL is mentioned - it is a sanctioned ACBL game. What was the problem with your money? These games are a bargain!!! -
"I refuse to show you my remaining cards!" - How d
JoAnneM replied to geller's topic in Laws and Rulings
Under Law 71.2 It seems that declarer doesn't have to know in advance that there might be a problem with the concession, it just states that a trick cannot be conceded that cannot be lost. It would seem that any declarer engaging in Active Ethics would want to check to make sure that the opponents did not have any sure tricks, and that the opponents are required to show their hands, if asked. CONCESSION CANCELED A concession must stand, once made, except that within the correction period established under Law 79C the Director shall cancel a concession: 1. if a player conceded a trick his side had, in fact, won; or 2. if a player has conceded a trick that could not be lost by any normal* play of the remaining cards. The board is rescored with such trick awarded to his side. -

He should be able to see the cards. He cannot accept any tricks that are not his, and he is entitled to see if anyone has revoked, although normally when declarer claims and it is accepted the opponents do not show their cards. Sometimes it happens that an opponent will concede and his partner has a trick. -
BBO is anonymous for the most part so trying to enforce any set rules for self-ranking is futile. Players can just change their names and be right back at it. My advice is to find a small circle of people you like to play with and let that circle grow by word of mouth. For new players to the site it might involve kibbitzing and getting to know some players first.

"Director, please" is the right call. Give club players the respect that they deserve by requiring them to play like sanctioned bridge players. Club players who venture to larger tournaments and who have played in a club that teaches the Laws are well prepared for tournament play, even if it is something as simple as how to call the Director.

I have learned (the hard way) that GIB does not recognise "double and bid". It is going to bid its suit that it "thinks" you have a fit in until it runs out of bidding space.

bergen or not bergen
JoAnneM replied to babalu1997's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Coming out of a club playing nothing but standard american, and into the online bridge atmosphere, bergen was the first thing I learned, and it absolutely turned me onto bridge again. I think it was learning that there was more to the game. This was many years ago (online bridge has been around twenty years now) and online bridge is still keeping me interested and learning. -
I think it is wrong for GIB to be "simulating" hands when it should be following a bidding convention. This sort of thing has happened to me many times, not necessarily with rkc, and it is getting tiresome. I am learning to follow GIB's quirks, but that is not bridge.

There is a difference between fear and hate.

I would avoid tournaments with that director, and I would report him to BBO, if they have a way to do that.

Some places you can win a prize for having the most partners. :)

Where else would you put your green pass cards but in the front. Don't you believe in LIFO? (Last in, First out) Just imagine all the accidental doubles if they were in front! That would truly be operator error.
