  1. A regular partner of mine told me about this one. Sadly I don't have the vulnerability but it was a swiss teams event. Kxxxx x AQTxx Ax (1H) 1S (2H) ....(P) P 3D After RHO opens 1H, a 2H bid would be weak or strong (this hand is intermediate). Partner hesitates before passing over 2H. The partnership on these cards got to 5D which made. The director polled 10 players, of whom 8 bid 3D WTP, 1 bid 3D but considered pass, and 1 passed. As a result, the TD ruled score stands. As the AC, what do you think?
  2. If you have no UI (from an explanation or hesitation from partner) then you are free to bid as you like. So I would rule no adjustment. The opponents are only allowed to know your agreements, not what is in your hand.
  3. It should show something like that, yes. On frequency grounds (when you have the opposition doing a lot of bidding like this) showing where your values lie is a lot more helpful than 4D as a cue bid and a slam try.
  4. How do you go about telling a bridge divorce from a partner whom you play the majority of your serious bridge with when said partner is also a friend away from the bridge table. I've been told by someone in selection authority that my current partner is holding me back for selection from high level events.
  5. Is it important? No, not really. It is interesting? Yes. I check my placing at least once a week. Does it show any significant information? No, not really. My highest ranking was an ace of hearts, when I had little to do except play bridge and I was full of energy when I played. Now I have a job, my ranking has gone down a little.
  6. Your choices are pass or 3S. If I knew opponents were honest citizens, I would pass and double 3H for take-out. Against your opposition, this is risky (they might decide to go off in 50s in a 2/1 fit), so I try 3S. Not sure I get to 6S unless partner responds 4H as a cue.
  7. Sorry, I put the South and West cards in on this one by mistake. Duly amended.
  8. And another +710. Anyone to blame for this one?[hv=pc=n&s=skha52da74cakqj54&n=saj95432hqd863c97&d=n&v=0&b=1&a=pp2cp2dp3cp3sp3np4sppp]266|200[/hv] I should add that South dealt and it was NS vul.
  9. [hv=pc=n&s=sakt532hdakt543ct&n=sq6hqt7542dj8ckq5&d=n&v=n&b=5&a=2hp2sppp]266|200[/hv] Our team-mates conspired to lose it as well - +260 (sigh) 2H was a weak 2, and 2S was constructive but not forcing. 2NT is the only forcing call after a weak 2 in their methods. Who gets the blame for this one?
  10. [hv=pc=n&s=sj7532hqt98d5ca72&n=shakj42dakq42ckqt&d=n&v=b&b=13&a=2dp2sp2np3cp3sp4hppp]266|200[/hv] Partner was North. 2D was 8 playing tricks in a single suited hand or 16-22 3 suited. 2S was the better major, 2NT showed the 3 suited hand, 3C asked for the shortage, 3S showed spades, 4H was to play. This hand lost us the Penzance Swiss Teams. I'm putting the blame entirely on partner for this one (which he accepts), but which call was the worst?
  11. Yes, I also bid 4S. If partner passes it, I'm actually quite happy, since this suggests partner doesn't have a heart control.
  12. Is this thread still here? Mods...!
  13. This shows why rebidding your suit after a 1 level response should show a minimum of 6, regardless of whether you play 4 or 5 card majors.
  14. Getting back to the actual ruling, after due consideration as specified by David (Bluejak), I think that pass is not an LA. If partner is a LOL, 3NT as a choice of games bid is not a call I would make under any circumstances. Therefore, like Paul, I rule no adjustment.
  15. You had 9 tricks at the beginning. How are you going to get back into your hand to win your second spade trick?
  16. As a player who still gets asked "So when do you graduate from university", I can confirm that the Young Chelsea Bridge Club is one of, if not the, most welcoming bridge clubs to young players. You can get taken to the cleaners a bit there though if you haven't been playing for very long. It is a high standard of play (for club bridge).
  17. I was about to write exactly what Codo said (in his first two lines)
  18. First round of your local green pointed swiss teams. Half of opponents's team haven't showed up and so the directors substitute in. A director call comes when you're declarer, so LHD (left hand director) goes off to attend. Partner offers to play the defence for that hand, accepted by your RHD. Annoyingly he defended well, and we lost 2 imps on the board. :-D
  19. S 5 H KQT73 D AJ7 C AQ63 1H (2C) X (2S) ? If you want to double, you play this as 3 spades

    Slam?

Partner thought that 3H was a second suit and a non-minimum. Would that influence any thoughts about how partner would respond after 4H?
  21. At the two tables before you, there have been director calls from the opposition about a hesitation by your side (by which I mean the other North South pairs). Given that both had a rather loud argument, it was impossible not to hear the information given. You call the director before taking the cards out of the board and inform him that you are aware of this fact. He curtly tells you to ignore the information as best you can for now, and call him back at the end if necessary. [hv=pc=n&s=sa6h72dakq97ckt73&n=s72hk83d6542caj52&d=s&v=0&b=11&a=1dp2d2s3cp3dp3nppp]266|200[/hv] This was your auction. 2D was an inverted raise, but partner forgot. During the play, West discards two clubs so you make 5 diamonds, 4 clubs and a spade for 10 tricks. Do you adjust the score, or make any rulings here?
  22. For me, the hesitation suggests that partner was thinking about passing 4H rather than correcting to 5D, not deciding whether to bid 5D or 6D. So I would not adjust the score. Certainly I don't think that 6D is demonstrably suggested by the hesitation.

    Slam?

You guys are good! There was indeed a laws and rulings problem. Your partner forgot to alert the 3H bid as showing shortage. After the 4D cue, this hand signed off in 4S. Partner had indeed forgotten that 3H shows shortage. 4S just made, losing a club and 2 trumps. Partner's hand was as follows: 9652 AKQ3 K5 642 Opponents call the director to the table. Do you adjust?

    Slam?

    S KJ873 H Void D A987 C KQJ3 1S 2NT 3H 4D ? MPs, you deal. 2NT was a limit + spade raise, 3H shows shortage and a non-minimum, GF, 4D was a cue. What do you bid here?
