I also play transfers after 1♦-(3♣), with inv+ hands. I think that this method works better than the natural forcing free bids. Another possibility is to play 3♦ as NF and to revert 3♠ and 3♥ calls (3♥=5+♠ inv+, 3♠=5+♥ GF). The main advantages of this method are rightsiding the contract and the possibility to stop in 3♠. To Wayne: I realy hate playing NF free-bids here, but maybe the preempt isn't raised too often in your country B) Playing natural methods, double and 3♠ shouls show this type of hand.

5♦. I don't like your methods on this sequence
-
1♠ seems obvious, hand is too strong for 4♠ and hearts still can be our best strain, but sometimes 4♠ may work, shutting off the opponents or puting them to a guess.

I completely agree with Mike's post. Double sounds nice, but it's not. It lies about our spade length and it puts partner in an awkard position too often. About 3NT, it seems pretty wild shot to me, but sometimes it may work. What i'd like to underline is, that even if 3nt makes and we skip it, we still can make 5♣ or 4NT. Preempts work and we have to take the middle road, the line that works more often.

to pass or not to pass
Edmunte1 replied to Codo's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Pass, paying the preempt. Double would too often work out badly. -
Fit jump? You must be joking About doubling: I like doubling here, especially against weaker opponents. I call it tax collector
-
I'll pass. It doesn't seem our board, i have some defense and i don't have a ♠ lead director.
-
2♠ for me. I admit i'm a member of Gallus Domesticus family :P, but at least i don't lose all my feathers in the winter :)
-
I'd overcall for 2 main reasons: 1) Taking away some bidding space 2) Making a lead directing bid
-
1. Your double over 3♣ is very bad. Playing support doubles over 2 in partner's major should definitely show extras 2. 1♠ by partner was also bad, but that's not the main reason you reached this bad slam

Well done Justin, keep it this way

You're sitting South, strong team match 1.[hv=d=w&v=n&s=sj1098765hj2d876ck]133|100|Scoring: IMP (3♦)-3♥-(pass)-?[/hv] 2.[hv=d=w&v=n&s=sj1098765hj2d876ck]133|100|Scoring: IMP (3♦)-3♥-(pass)-?[/hv]

I think 4♥ is a much better call than double
-
I'll pass both times
-
I would have bid 4♥, but 2♥ can be a choice, over 3♥ North has a mandatory raise.

Forcing? Not Forcing?
Edmunte1 replied to ArtK78's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I definitely prefer it as forcing after a preempt. Why? Because i really HATE bidding 3♣ and then 3♠ and looking for our best contract somewhere into the bushes. I better play one trick higher in our partscore than having to find our fit on forth level. -
I see 3 choices ♠, ♦ or ♥. This is that kind of board where you have to make a good wish: partner has at maximum 5-6 hcp, and opps have a source of tricks and as long as ♣A will be knocked out, they will usually make the game. Let's take a deeper look on every lead: -♠ lead - will work when partner has ♠ length and honours, and it's has a pretty small success expentacy: needs to find partener with Axxxx (and ♠ to be 22) or KQxxx. -♦ lead - probably best in MP's has some flaws. If inverted minors denies 4 cards major, it has frequntly 3+card in other minor (3325, 3235, 2335, 3145, 2245, 1345 are the most frequent shapes). Adding 2+♦ in the opener's hand, it's pretty improbable that partner has a 5 carder in ♦. So usually in the best case we will make 4 tricks in diamonds, and this means it's not late to play diamonds even after we'll play ♣A (3♦+♣A is not good enough) -♥ lead - pretty strangely, has a bigger chance of success than ♠ or♦. It needs Axxxx in partner's hand (or QJxxx and Ax in opps hand). And it's more probable than ♠ lead, because we have an increased chance to find a 5 carder in our 3 card suit, than in a 4 card suit, and it doesn't depend on ♥ lying 22, as in ♠. So statistically ♥ lead should work better than ♠ lead or ♦ lead

1.2♥, maybe 2♠ is an option 2. 3♣, i disagree with double.
-
But presumably it was down 5 on a heart lead. Heart to the queen, spade to the ace, heart to the ace, spade. Of course you're right
-
1. Partner held: ♠KQJx ♥AKxx ♦♣Qx AKx. I passed, opps bid game, lost 7. 2. Partener held ♠K ♥KJxx ♦Kxx ♣AJ10xx, Diamonds were 4-1, but surprisingly ♣ finesse worked this time, so 3NT was the lucky call this time. 3. Partener held: ♠QJx ♥10xxx ♦x ♣xxxxx, but all cards were lying well so the game was on

2♦ is a better bid for me, for many reasons: -takes away bidding space -it's a good lead director -cannot be penalised due to the good quality of the suit I won't double with this hand, tghough i play ELC

All boards are from Romanian National Division, you're sitting South: 1.[hv=d=n&v=n&s=s10752hqj3d10983c82]133|100|Scoring: IMP 2NT(20-bad 22)-(pass) - ?[/hv] 2.[hv=d=n&v=n&s=s10752hqj3d10983c82]133|100|Scoring: IMP 2NT(20-bad 22)-(pass) - ?[/hv] 3.[hv=d=n&v=n&s=s10752hqj3d10983c82]133|100|Scoring: IMP 2NT(20-bad 22)-(pass) - ?[/hv]

2♣, then double. I would agree with double as long as i had at least one spade honour, and playing in a 4-3♠ fit won't be too often a bad contract

Balancing convention
Edmunte1 replied to gwnn's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I think that shapes that should be covered are: -5m+4♥ -5♥+4m -one suiter ♣/♦/♥ -5-4 minors One possible way to cover all this possibilities is: -x=5-4 minors or one suited minor -2NT shows ♦preference, 3♣ shows club preference, partner corects with one suited hand -2NT=5m+4♥, 3♣ is pas/corect -3m=5♥+4m -3♥=6♥ But i'm not sure about BD structure, just guessing
