  1. What is your system ? ( What is 2C ? ) I assume it is strong, artificial. Then Responder's Pass! = not a bust ( RDBL = bust ) So, 3C = natural, 5+ cards, but no 2 of 3 top honors ( otherwise would have bid 3C over the X ).
  2. I thought that was adequately covered by the other posters. But here are some general follow-ups ( which also can be used for Michaels ) -- Simple Advances are for "pass or correct". -- Advancer "cues" to show a strong unbalanced hand. -- Advancer bids 2NT to show a strong balanced hand w/stop(s) in Opener's suit. -- If Advancer bids the "known" suit ( usually Sp); Overcaller bids his "unknown" suit to show a stronger hand. -- If Advancer bids the "unknown" suit, Overcaller cues OR bids 2NT to show agreement and the stronger hand.
  3. My only suggestion is to try Bailey Cuebids ( as opposed to Michaels ) because it can always get spades + minor 2-suiter into the picture whereas Michaels cannot. Bailey: For example, you have a 5/5 in Sp + Diam ( or Hts ) : ( 1C ) - 2C! = Spades and either Hts or Diam ; whereas Michaels can only be used for Hts and Spades. Likewise: ( 1D ) - 2D! = Spades and either Hts or Cl; whereas Michaels can only be used for Hts and Sp.
  4. Agree ... if you were to select Option 2 . [ Zel needs to change the premise on Option 2 ] .
  5. Not sure if this analysis is correct for the "safety play" above: A) The odds of West holding 5 or 6 Clubs is 8 % B1) The odds of a 3-2 Spade split with west holding the doubleton is 34% B2) The odds of West specifically holding Q 10 ( or 9 ) doubleton is half of 34% = 17% ( see below ) Q 10 9 a b Q 9 10 a b Q a 10 9 b Q b 10 9 a Therefore, the odds of A + B2 occurring = .08 x .17 x 100 = 1.4 % And that doesn't take into account the 50% probabilty of the Ht Ace offsides ..... which reduces the "adverse" odds to less than 1% ,
  6. Upon further thot, manudude and GIB are right.
  7. [hv=pc=n&s=s32hjt5dj95ckqj42&w=skjt987h982d86c97&n=sq54hk764dqcat853&e=sa6haq3dakt7432c6&d=w&v=e&b=16&a=p1c1d2c2s3c4spp5c5dp5sppp]399|300[/hv] ♣ Ace ...Opening lead ♦ Q switch
  8. I realize this is B/I, but 1NT - 2H! 2S - 4C/4D/4H = self-splinters whereas: 1NT - 2H! 2S - 3C/3D/3H = GF, and ostensibly a 2nd 5 card suit ( although it could be a a good 4 ) .
  9. Option 1 ... A) to protect against East holding Q 10 9 x . whereas Option 2 puts you in jeopardy with A)
  10. Systems ON . And one of my partners likes to use 3-level jumps to show a 5-5 ( in the majors, here ): 3H!-jump = invite 3S!-jump = GF, slammish
  11. The same 7D would be reached if 4H! ( by Opener ) were kickback-RKC for ♦. Once all key cards are accounted for when Opener makes a K-ask , Responder would just leap to 7D eventho there is a small chance Opener does not have the ♣ K .
  12. That 3H preempt sure cramped the "exploration" since a fit was not discovered yet, nor a gameforce ( GF ). So, that got me to thinking. Why not use 2C! as a GF ( could be artificial ) over a 1D open. [ We have seen it used before here ( but not by me ) for 1-Major openings ) . 2C! would not deny a 4 card Major... as is usual for 1D - 2C! auctions. Now the 3H-jump interference doesn't do much harm: 1D - ( p ) - 2C! - ( 3H ) And opener can pass! w/o a 4 card major ( w/o 4 cards ♠ in this case ) and not worry about a passout in a GF situation: pass! - 4D ( and Responder and show his 4+♦ support, also w/o worry about partner passing ) 4H! ( mixed cue ) - 4NT ( RKC for ♦ ) 5S ( 2 + ♦ Q ) - 5NT ( K - ask, guaranteeing all key cards ) 6C ( ♣ K ) - 7D
  13. I changed the 400 300 to 500 400 for a bit larger.
  14. Side issue: Passed hand uses 2NT! as a 4 card fit , INV . ?? Isn't 2NT better used for something else in the long run and use 2D! ( 2-way Drury ) for the 4 card INV ( or 2C! , REV Drury for either 3 or 4 card INV ) for better "protection" for Opener -- especially if you are prone to Open 9 counts in 4th ??
  15. These make more sense than my first reply. For some reason partner felt his "good" hand was flawed to make an overcall: 1) wrong shape 2) poor long suit ( 10 x x x x in ♠ ) 3) long ♣ suit But now after the DBL, he feels he doesn't have enough to convert the DBL to penalty. Something like: 9 x x x x K J K x K Q x x
  16. Check out my similar auction recently: http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/topic/49547-partners-double-jump-in-new-suit/ And see whereagle's reply ( post # 6 ) . Partner likes Spades but was flawed for a 1-opener or weak-2 ( or 3 ) open.
  17. The problem is the 3♣ rebid by Responder.... not that it is a bad bid, but it takes up too much space when you essentially want to know if opener has 3 cards ♥. When opener does not have 3 cards ♥, s/he is left with fewer options for a rebid. If Responder uses "cheapest new suit forcing, artificial" ( EDIT addition: 2♠ ), then Opener here could rebid 2NT = showing a stop ( or partial stop ) in the other Major. He was reluctant to rebid 3NT over 3♣, although I suspect that the other table did not show such reluctance.... and hoped his ♦ would run . And if Opener did not have a ♠-stop, there is still room to show a 4 card ♣ suit at the 3-level. The final option for "none of the above" for Opener is a 3♦ rebid.
  18. I agree. And Eagle's answer is consistent with his reply to my recent post with about the same auction ( http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/topic/49547-partners-double-jump-in-new-suit/ ) .
  19. A DBL now is Responsive... showing the minors . You have Spades... bid them, when partner most likely has them also.
  20. For what it is worth, here is the full hand: [hv=pc=n&s=shq7652dkq763ckq8&w=skq95hat9d42ca962&n=sjt7h4daj5cjt7543&e=sa86432hkj83dt98c&d=s&v=b&b=7&a=1hdp3sppp]399|300| MP, Made 12 tricks when opps' did not take their Diam.[/hv]
  21. Why would any Responder bid Puppet ( EDIT: or even just regular Stayman ) holding 5-5 in the Majors ? As shown, if Opener does have a 4 card Major ( the 3D! reply ), you don't get suit agreement here until the 4-level with a 4M bid - - not much room for cuebidding, right ? And if Opener does NOT have a 4 card ( or 5 card ) Major ( I assume a 3NT reply ), then how do you even find the right 5-3 fit in a Major ? The 3-level jumps, as others have mentioned are better. Even the transfer ( to Spades ) sequence is better, planing on rebidding 3H after a simple 2S accept. But here you get a Super-Accept: 1NT - 2H! 3H ( 4s, max, doubleton Ht ) - 4C ( 1st or 2nd Rnd Ctrl ) 4D - 4H 4NT - 6C ( 1 + Cl void ) 6S
  22. PART 2 : MP Both Vul Do you, the doubler, "go" ( 4S ) with: ♠ K Q 9 x ♥ A 10 9 ♦ x x ♣ A 9 x x
  23. I only have a "resulting" auction: 2C - 2D! ( not a bust ) 3S jump ( sets trumps, demands cuebidding ) - 4C 4D - 4H! ( Last Train to Clarksville ) 5D - 6D 6H - 6S
