Are you saying that West would look for another suit lead instead of leading from his 5 card suit : A J 9 6 x or K J 9 6 x which occurs twice as often as A K x 6 x . I don't think I denied a lead from A K x 6 x ... I just took the 67% chance on my play of the duck to the ten ( post # 6 ) .
If you assume West did NOT lead away from BOTH ♣A and K, then from Rule-of- 11 , East can't have the J or the 9. So, playing LOW generates a sure stop. The next guess is whether East, upon winning the A ( or K ), will return a ♣ or switch to a ♦ .
The A, Q or J needed to be led. Anything else allowed Declarer to win the race. Declarer held 3 cards ( K 9 x ) and dummy had 3 cards ( 10 x x ) . ( Declarer also needed ♥ tricks to make . )
Without interference: 2D = waiting, but positive ( at least an A or K or 2 Q ) 2H! = bust With: 2C - ( X ) - ?? pass = positive; would have bid 2D without interference . any suit = natural and positive, EDIT: except this time, 2D and 2H are natural. XX! = bust ( this is not standard; EDIT: may switch pass and XX meanings ).
1NT - 2C 2D - 3m = forcing ( Game force ) showing a 4 card Major and longer minor . 1NT - 2C 2M - 3m = same, but have 4 cards in OTHER Major ( ie. NO major fit ). This is part of the Baze convention for Stayman auctions which has been mentioned on the forum a number of times.
Opener's hand was: Q 10 9 5 2 A 10 3 Q 7 3 A 9 Like MikeH, I too thought Responder's 9 Loser Trick Count hand was only worth a Bergen 3D limit raise. Normally, after an upper Bergen raise, Declarer is all but assured of at least making game. But I think a 3S rebid by Opener should warn of a minimum opening ( no more than 12 hcp and no great distribution ) . This would allow Responder a rare PASS with his flat 12 hcp and 9 loser hand. As it was, everyone was in 4S ( one way or another ) and all were off 1 .
Partner opens 1♠ in 2nd seat ( IMPs, all red if it matters ) 2/1, regular Bergen raises and plain vanilla Jac2NT GF raise. Pass to you. In this day and age of light openings, what would you respond with this flat 12 hcp : A K 8 6 7 6 5 A 6 5 J 6 2 EDIT ( addition ) : Opener's hand is given in post # 11 .
Since it is not very often that Responder can be 4-4 in the Majors, you can confidently Neg-DBL using the following ( not widely used ) treatment: 2H = 4+ cards 2S = 5+ cards DBL = 4 cards ♠ and says "nada about ♥" .
