You've identified the problem! Can you figure out the solution? Clearly winning 1 diamond and playing hearts doesn't work due to entries, as you have correctly identified...

Cute hand, but don't post play problems double dummy unless it's... a double dummy problem

It's hearts illusions I recall

You will avoid many disasters :) -
Forgot about this thread. Sure 11+14 is better than 17+8. But I sure don't want to play 2N with 11+11-13... basically what P_Marlowe said

Responding to partner's takeout double
kuhchung replied to Liversidge's topic in Novice and Beginner Forum
Responding to TOX is pretty interesting. With a 4cM and a 5cm, pretty much ALWAYS respond the major. Imagine it gets competitive, then you can rebid the minor. Partner can give preference back with 4 card support, or pass without. Also, this allows partner to double slightly offshape in the minors, which is a winning style in my opinion. Partner should not give preference back to the major with 3 card support; if you had a 5 card major, you would bid, then rebid it if you really wanted to play it. With two 4 card suits, respond HIGHER. Say it goes (1C) x (p) and you have some middling hand with 44 majors. Bid 1S now. If opener rebids 2C (or partner cuebids 2C), you can now bid 2H and get both suits in. Look how poorly this would go with both of those hand types if you bid your longer suit or up the line. (1C) x (p) and you are 4M5D. If you bid 1D first and still wanted to compete, you'd have to bid 2M. This is clearly worse. Same if you're 44 majors and bid 1H first, and then later decided "whoops I wanted to compete in spades too." Notice that this is very different from normal responses to openings, where you go up the line with 4-4. -
Thanks for the sim nullve! Can you go a step further and figure out how we're doing on those hands? I am not smart enough for things like this.
-
I doubled as well. Of course partner has the nut low (4423 yarb or something like that) and you go for 500, with 800 available to the opps, not that it matters of course. Wasn't sure if this was just bad luck or a bad decision. Even at the table I was thinking possibly there should be no balanced hands in range for double here, but no idea.

r/w MPs, but please state what you would do at other vuls too (1N) p (2S) p (2N) p (3C) ? ATxx AKTx Q9x Ax 1N was 14-16, 2S was range or clubs

Handling competition over 2 clubs opening

++ for Stephen Tu's post! -
I usually bid 3S with 18 bal, but considering how pure this hand is and it even has a doubleton i'll bid 4S. Really though is everyone bidding 4S with a bunch of random 18s? I thought BBF duked this out long ago i don't want to be in 4S with 18 opposite 0-6!
-
do people really invite with 11 opposite 11-14? that's horrible. even worse than inviting with 8 opposite 15-17
-
4th seat decisions are much more than just hand evaluations. do your opps open light? is your partner very sound? do you have a large skill edge over opps?
-
does anyone want to play at the st Augustine club or any other nearby club I don't know about? I have 500 masterpoints for anyone who cares

passsssssssssssssss -
I was playing a strong club, and at the time, we weren't opening 2N on 20-21 bal. I picked up 20, opened 1C, and opps promptly found a profitable 4S save over our 4H. I now play 20-21 2N.

Blood(y) diamonds

Or maybe their carding looked like 5-3 hearts, shrug Hard to blame taking the club hook without details -
obviously you are much stronger than me, but I think the fact that you were loathe to even open 2C on this hand (and I agree) even WITH 6 pieces is a sign that partner often has 6 more than not. Surely tons of hands with only 5 are far less attractive. I hate opening 2C when I have to commit to the 3 level at my first natural rebid without 6, but maybe this is a me playing with me thing -- although I did give only the responding hand to a friend and he bid 4C without reservation edit: oh yay as usual I agree with wank

1N 6N
-
there's that CY response If partner shows a big hand that often has 6C, I am raising with the doubleton and not worrying about the horrible 24 count with values in its short suits
-
I think 3N is suicidal. I would just bid 4C over 3S. I have a club fit, Kx of partner's secondary suit, and all my values concentrated in what I bid. If partner only has 5 clubs on this sequence, that's his problem
