  1. What's more -- I'd love to see the auction with AKQ / 5432 / AK2 / 432 after 1C-1S.
  2. Yeah 4N quant. Suit Agreement shouldn't be blackwood. So you can FSF and bid clubs to set clubs if you have interest in a club slam.
  3. Ah, nice. Missed the rounded squeeze against W. wd
  4. also note that bunnygo is talking about the whole hand, and I'm just talking about the end position reached in OP
  5. Just up vote every other post - past and future. That should compensate.
  6. There doesn't appear to be a squeeze on this hand if LHO's lead was 3/5. There's no entry in C for a dbl if LHO started with 3, and if LHO started with 5 clubs, the major squeeze is positional (and out of position). However, if LHO made a deceptive lead of a low club and started 4144, now 2 rounds of hearts squeezes him in the blacks. So I think the right play here is HK, and if LHO shows out, you play for the black suit squeeze on LHO (this preserves a win if spades are 3-3 as well). Otherwise you hope for 3-3 hearts or 3-3 spades. edit: This also wins when righty blows on the second heart and LHO started 4441
  7. Oh, but they are in a lot of trouble if you rip 1N.

    GIB'd

    Is this really that subtle?

    GIB'd

Why bother bidding 4C if GIB won't evaluate its hand in context? If I knew GIB wouldn't move with that, I would have shown spade shortness. edit: eh, maybe the 4th club kind of sucks since we're not getting pitches. I still don't know if I have enough to move, but I'm getting more sympathetic to GIB.

  11. After dealing out 8 major cards to LHO and 6 major cards to RHO, there are 12 minor cards to be distributed: 5 to LHO and 7 to RHO. The cases we can be in are when LHO gets: Jxx / xx - 5C2 * 6C2 = 150 cases xx / xxx - 5C2 * 6C3 = 200 cases In the former, we should drop. In the latter, we should finesse. This looks to me like 4:3 in favor of the finesse (or 57.14%). Two notes: 1) I don't think the club discards should be taken into account, so I didn't account for them, except that 2) If anything, LHO is super-unlikely to discard a club from Kx, so perhaps we should give even a bit more weight to the finesse.
  12. Awesome, should be a lot of fun. I loved Zion (but I _really_ loved Bryce Canyon for photo ops -- it is unfortunately somewhat further out of your way, though. Perhaps on another trip).
  13. Never done a helicopter tour of the GC, but I've only heard good things (including from relatives). From personal experience, I'd recommend a day or so there if you can swing it (unfortunately, with travel time from LV, this eats a few days up). When we went a few years ago, we were on a tight timeline. We arrived in the late afternoon (south rim), took the park bus a few stops, took lots of pictures, and when the sun went down we went and rested at the hotel. We got up early, did a morning couple-hour hike into the canyon (not all the way to the bottom, but the views were still excellent -- not for the faint of heart though as it is just switchbacks in a canyon), and hiked back out. We were on the road by late morning/early afternoon (after an unfortunate nail in the tire incident, even), and we hit Vegas before sundown, including a stop for pictures at the Hoover Dam, but no tour or anything. If you haven't seen it, the GC is incredible, and I highly recommend it. I suspect it's good both by helicopter and not, but there was something about standing at the edge. Maybe someday I'll get to compare the experiences.
  14. Already booked with bd71 for the LM Pairs and some of the Ann Arbor crew for the open Swiss, so my weekends are booked. But I definitely appreciate the offer, and I'd love to take you up on it at some point -- either a weekday evening game during the NABC or perhaps an upcoming regional/sectional if you are available. I'll PM you.
  15. No, mostly I meant like I have a team from back in Ann Arbor, where I'm pretty confident I'm not the best on the team, and our avg MP is < 500. And it's probably pretty close to a team of 4xMe on average. We'll try to meet up at a regional like once a year (say, Cleveland or Detroit), and here we end up playing in the B1 KO (in the bracket with like Bill Arlinghaus, Bert Newman, Chuck Berger, Zeke Jabbour, Howard Piltch, Jade Barrett, the Granovetters, the Kranyaks, etc). These are like my favorite games, but it makes me a little uncomfortable to think that there are teams that we are -EV against who scoff at the fact that we're playing in that bracket, and that's part of the point I was addressing. We're not there because we're arrogant, and we're not there to luckbox a win and claim we're better than all these really good players. And we don't like it if it pisses you guys off that we're playing up. We just think it's pointless to play against total droolers, and the only alternative we have from the directors is B1. Your point about networking is well-taken.
  16. Not disagreeing with you, but I get to play like 1-2 regional swisses and about 3 sectional swisses a year, and I might make it for 2-3 days to a national. And most of these events I don't get to play with a regular partner. Now I show up to Fayetteville because I have 3 days off of work and because my hypothetical regular partner and our hypothetical regular teammates live there. We all have under 500 MP. We want to play a KO, but we'd be in bracket 6. Now I am definitely cannon fodder in bracket 1 (this isn't a general statement about me in regional bracket 1s, but I probably am not going to win against steve and gavin and the poles or against meckwell in a long match) , but do I really have to play in bracket 6 against the LOLs? Because usually when we ask to play up, these are the choices we get. I understand the argument that we have to "level up" in order to play against the big boys, but it's not fun (hell, it's hardly bridge) to play in these total **** brackets, and I can't justify taking time off to do it. So I'm stuck with trying to run good in all the open swisses I can for 10 gold a pop, so that maybe someday I can justify an entry into a bracketed KO. Just seems like a really long and arduous road when I could be very competitive right now in B2 or B3 of 6. Just sort of stream-of-consciousness'ed this, so sorry if it's at all incoherent.
  17. The methods JB posted differ when leading from a 6-bagger as well, and that is somewhat important to get right.
  18. BBO has this feature where alerts and announcements appear in the hand diagram. I don't get how you can be so condescending at least twice in this thread but not even fully digest the OP.
  19. I think Kit Woolsey wrote a nice article for BW(orld -- BW is overloaded I guess) within the last 3 years (last 2 years I'm pretty sure, even) arguing that one should play SF NT. If you have those at your disposal, the article should be easy enough to find.

  21. 2♠ here too -- we overcall pretty aggressively.
  22. QJx / J8xx / x / QJ87x P (1D) P (1S) P (1N) P (P) ? Pass, dbl, or 2C? Choose your own colors and form of scoring.
  23. Yeah, for sure you will win the two once everyone else has run out of cards.
