George died today; Weezy died in 2004.

Something good to ask them, I guess; when I've played them, it's usually good 6-9 // 10-bad 12 ... but we were (are?) biddin' fools.
-
I assume that when someone plays Bergen raises that are inverted, the OP will describe the agreement as "reverse Bergen" or "inverted Bergen." Further, I don't really question that 3C is a constructive Bergen raise when the hand in question holds a not-particularly-shapely 8HCP. Obviously more system inquiries are required if EW don't cuebid. But if they don't cue, we're not likely in this situation, as 3N is probably not slammish in spades then either.
-
Would help to know what their agreements are outside of competition. If 3N is to play after the Bergen raise, I think pass is a LA to 4S, and the lack of alert suggests 4S instead of 3N, so I'd roll this to 3N. If 3N shows extras, E certainly has a max, even without keys, and will likely bid 4C if their cuebidding style permits it. W may bid 4N to play, after which E will answer KC, I assume. If 1430, east will bid 5D, and any west will figure out what's going on and retreat to spades. I'd rule 5S-1. If 3014 or straight BW, however, 5C down a bunch seems right. PP to an east who should know better (or at least a clear explanation of the laws for one who shouldn't be expected to know better) for blatantly using the UI though.

Indeed, 2S is LR+, 3S is splinter.

Teams w/r x / xxx / Qxx / AJ10xxx 1C (1S) ? 2C is competitive in your methods, 3+ C preemptive, jumps are fit. Also interested in what you'd do at r/w if it makes a difference.

Congrats to my friends (team Glick) who won the 1500 Spingold in convincing fashion! Q1 was 21-20, Q2 was 96-1, and opps WD. Well deserved win for the Michigan crew. -

I was thinking he was speaking in the metaphorical sense of the word "got." But in the highly unlikely event that he was being literal, it's pretty nitty to care anyway imo. -
You also drive on the left

Dbl by responder is values, so it's fine. We're not gonna miss our games. Opener can still bid the opposite major so that this gets rightsided (or 4D with both, or 3D with neither, or sit with a balanced defensive hand).

2nd-seat R/R pre-empt decision

That's fine, and I see your point, but there are a lot of hands that 4th chair can hold. AKQx / KQx / Kxxx / xx If partner holds xxx / Axx / AQxxx / xx she's going to bid 3N (confidently) and they can cash 5 (or more!) clubs off the top. Does this mean you shouldn't open 1N? -

I think 3N is a pretty good game with this opposite that. Especially so, since opps' longest suit is hearts. You're making 100% of the time you have Hx-Hx in diamonds (4 combos) + 2 combos of Hxx-H + 1 combo of HH-xx. We're near 50% already, and we haven't taken into account any of the doubleshots you have: e.g., they lead hearts and continue clubs or hearts later, or the spades block. -
A usual scheme is that XX is business, bidding normally shows a club stopper, and pass shows all hands without a club stopper. After pass, ... XX - This is re-Stayman, but opener inverts his reply so that 2H shows spades, 2S shows hearts. This is to keep doubler on lead if we play in a major, protecting (at least for now) our only potental club cards. ... ... 2D - no major, passable ... ... 2H - 4+ spades, possibly has hearts as well ... ... 2S - 4+ hearts, denies 4S. ... 2D - Shows 4+ diamonds and a 4cM, invitational but NF ... ... 2M shows 4 of the other major as above ... 2H is P/C (garbage) I would assume something like this playing with a solid player, regardless of whether we'd discussed it (hence I'd bid 2N in this auction). If I were playing with an inexperienced player, I'd either pass or bid 2N depending on my mood. Probably pass -- I'm not bringing a ton to the party. We're NV anyway, so I'll be happy with the plus. Either way, I'm marking this hand for discussion after the session.

Summer 2012 NABC Thread

Quick "man-could-we-get-a-worse-draw" story: Missed Q'ing for d2 of the LM pairs by < 1/2 a board, play the Saturday AM KO and get KO'd in r1. Seriously not having the best few sessions, right? So we go to play the "loser swiss": just the one-session Swiss on Saturday afternoon. r1 I sit down and have Allan Graves on my right and Richie Schwartz on my left with Baldursson and Jonsson at the other table. We lose that match by like 16 including a slam swing where only one of two reasonable lines works, so it felt closer than it was, especially since the round was only 6 boards. So we go for round 2, and I have Nick Demirev on my right and Jeff Wolfson on my left, with Steve Garner and Jack Oest at the other table. Oof -- tough draw for a loser swiss! -

Missed Qing for the LM pairs by < 1/2 a bd, how tilting. I saw some other bbo-ers in that boat so I sympathize. And it looks like a handful of pairs missed qualifying by even less, so can't complain too much I guess, but man, it sucks. -
I think I heard Meck say once (or heard someone say that they heard Meck say once, or heard someone say that they heard someone say that they heard Meck say, or ...) that if you open a 6-bagger and partner raises that you should just bid game. I'll go ahead and do that.

I really want this thread to be subtitled "and you can too!"

KITN to both of you. You shouldn't have sent that out to the whole group. 1. You start with emails, then try to 1-on-1 converse with him, then you start cc'ing the boss or go have a talk with the boss. 2. Go talk to him. If you've already done this, go over his head to the boss. 3. Deal with it. Life's too short. You can document if you think it's likely to become a pattern.

This. He has a shapely 2S bid, and his ODR is very high, even higher now that you've raised.

Holy moly, Winston, you must have fantastic genes. Your daughter is smokin' hot! [in the most respectful tone in which it's possible to utter those words :)]

I would also rip 1S. And if pard bids 3D over this, I will be real, real excited. -
where you, by ruffing high in the hand with the threats, force the defender behind the threats to either discard a guard or underruff, and you gain a trick either way.
