OOPS! Better late than never....both hands now posted: Splinter or Jacoby 2NT  The best summary for me from that post was Peachy's quote: "When you use Jacoby 2NT, you want to become the captain. When you splinter you want opener to become the captain. In other words, you Jacoby 2NT when you want to learn about opener’s hand. You splinter when you want opener to learn about your hand."

Bidding after neg double
masse24 replied to dustinst22's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
my "expert" partner told me I needed reverse values to "free bid" 2♠ What Phil said: You're just raising his ♠ bid... -
2♣ is GF (I assume). So...no need to go jumping to show "solid suit". 4♣ Gerber on the slim chance you are off two cashing Aces. If no Gerber available.....just do it, 6NT. Partner can "correct" to 7NT with 18-19.

[hv=pc=n&n=skq985hajt2dkj6c9&d=n&v=n&b=5&a=1sp2dp]133|200[/hv] Playing 2/1....so....2♦ a GF. A difference of opinion on North's rebid. I thought fairly standard, but the expert I questioned disagreed. Explanations welcome!

The hand here: ♠JT83 ♥KQ ♦AK43 ♣KQ3 As I stated mentioned, no fancy bells and whistles. No artificial 2♣'s with relays etc. The choices were 1♠ and 2♦. Since then, I have asked two World Class players and have given the them the full hand, asking, "What is your first bid?" Both replied 1♠... I understand the 2♦ camp...and do not completely disagree, as a matter of fact, I rather like it, setting up the GF immediately but not denying a 4 card ♠ suit. But the choice of 1♠ does not "Promise" 5 pieces...........DOES IT?

Responder can't be 4/4 in ♠'s & ♦'s?

Playing 2/1 with a P/U partner... Bidding proceeds: 1♥ - (P) - 1♠ - (P) 2♥ - (P) - 3♦ - (P) 3♥ - (P) - 4NT-(P) 5♣ - (P) - 5♥ How many ♠'s does responder show? I ask because a player at the table stated an opinion I was not in agreement with. Just looking for confirmation on my understanding of 2/1. (Hey I know there are lots of variations with many bells and whistles, just looking for standard) For what it's worth, responder had a huge hand...so, GF values.

I do not want to give up the possible slam, so, 2NT. But my partner probably has 8 ♠'s
-
Thanks for all the replies. I too thought it a clear 1♥ bid, though I must admit I was a bit worried about it being passed out. The full hand: [hv=pc=n&s=st7h9876dat4cat65&w=s65h53dkq5ckq9742&n=sakj84hakqj42d72c&e=sq932htdj9863cj83&d=e&v=n&b=2&a=ppp1hp]399|300[/hv] After the 1!H opening bid, can you suggest a reasonable auction to slam? And...which slam? How high do you get?

[hv=pc=n&n=sakj84hakqj42d72c]133|100[/hv] Playing 2/1: You are vulnerable vs. not in 4th seat. The bidding has passed round to you and you pick up this. If you open 2♣ an immediate double negative from partner is 2♥. Also, if your partner does bid 2♦ waiting (and a GF), do you bid 2♥ planning to somehow bid and rebid ♠'s or, jump immediately to 3♥ showing a self-sufficient suit and asking for Q-bids? If you do begin with 2♣... After an initial 2♥ rebid can the ♠ suit ever be believed to be a genuine suit? (Thus the reason for my post) Another option, being two-suited, is to open 1♥ planning a ♠ jump. (Drury not in effect 4th seat since openings generally sound) What are your thoughts about opening 2♣ with two suited hands and reasons for either not doing it or insisting it is best with hands such as this?

South, already a passed hand, figures that he has shown his strength and shape. If partner wants to go slamming, it's up to him. North, with this behemoth, loves his hand after the splinter, so Q-bids the ♥ control. The only card he wants to hear about is the ♣A, (or so he said). Should South bid 5♣, showing 1st round control, or is it North's responsibility to Bid 4NT RKCB?
-
Because 7♦ makes. The ♣ suit sets up to jettison losing ♥'s. But, my guess as well that it is not a viable grand to find. It requires Q third (or fewer) in ♣'s, which is something like 36%. We should be happy to be in a small slam. :D Thanks for your replies all.

Was it somehting I said? or bid?
masse24 replied to kenberg's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
My guess, based on the bidding and your partner's quick exit is as follows: He was in love with his ♥'s 3♣ was a Cue-bid thinking the suit had been agreed. (Yes....that is crazy). 4♥ was where he wanted to play it because you did not cooperate with his cue bid sequence. 6♥ was, again, your partner saying "Hearts is trump partner". Wrong? Absolutely. The quick exit...embarrassment? :( -

What's a Cuebid?
masse24 replied to blackshoe's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Mike Lawrence gave a lesson on Takeout Doubles on BBO yesterday. During the lesson, this exact bidding sequence, coincidentally, was bid on one of the boards. :D 1♣ (x) P (2♣) P...etc. According to Mike: "This cue bid usually shows both majors and at least invitational points." Following is a link to a summary of the lesson (see page 5 for this hand): Takeout Doubles-Mike Lawrence :P -
[hv=pc=n&e=sq62ha2dj962cj963&d=w&v=n&b=12&a=p1sp1np2cp2sdr]133|200[/hv] A bit of confusion as to what East's next move should be in this sequence. (Both pairs playing 2/1) What are your thoughts and why? Is this a clear choice  or up for partnership discussion?

1♠? * OR * 2♦? .....this was the reason for the Original Post...1♠? or 2♦? and, it seems we have a difference of opinion here as well. Why not 1♠? Why not 2♦? Would appreciate some additional insight. Thanks! :)
