My partner at the table bid 7♥. I'm not saying who my partner was. good bid or completely nuts?
-
I did. I made beef and brocolli with shrimp fried rice a couple days after I got the wok (amazingly good; amazingly simple). I made the metal hot, oiled it, let it cool down, heated it up again, oiled it, let it cool down again. And after I washed it, I re-oiled so that it wouldn't rust.

It was not that great a gift given i had to pack it up and take it on a plane with me. Security had to look through my bag B) I explained to them that it was a very cool hat and not a device i intended to blow up planes with.

This thread is a great idea. With that said, Santa got me a wok for Christmas. I know a lot of you are baller cooks with some baller recipes (paging Hrothgar). Aside from the obvious idea of throwing a bunch of meat and veggies into hot oil and stirfrying with sauce and such, does anyone have any recommendations of ideas or recipes or pro tips or anything I might find useful? I've never used a wok, and my parents never used woks, so I'm more or less going by instinct. In fact, I may start another "what should i do for dinner this weekend" thread, with the wok as the central focus of my plans. Please respond.

LOL@the 8-3 trump break in a suit you opened (semi)naturally and declared. pretty sick

Orla, an important concept to remember in bidding is that you have to be consistent throughout the entire auction. If, for example, you decide to make a 2♦ bid on this hand, you cannot later decide that you aren't strong enough for the subsequent bids. This is true because partner still has not limited his strength; he may be driving to slam even opposite your minimum 2♦ bid. Once you describe your hand as showing some amount of strength, you cannot later decide that you aren't good enough and try to compensate by passing a forcing bid or otherwise doing something to jeopardize partnership harmony. Kudos for resisting the urge to pass; you did well. So to answer your questions: Yes, when you bid 2♦, you promise another bid, especially when partner bids a new suit. Some play that 1M 2m 2M is passable, but that's up to you and your partner. Secondly, no, not at all. There are plenty of hands where you might simply take a preference to partner's first suit with a doubleton and an otherwise balanced hand, or you might bid 3m with extra length in your suit. You may have length in the 4th suit and want to bid it naturally (or artificially, I suppose) as well. 2NT is likely the most common bid when you don't have support, but it's certainly not mandatory.

[hv=d=s&v=n&s=shakqjtdaqjxxcjtx]133|100|Scoring: Total Points[/hv] 1♣ (3♠) ????? Edit: 1♣=3+, nothing special. Edit2: It may have been r/r. Probably doesn't matter much.

shackled with drury again

It is far, far from perfect, but imo it is the best bid with the given hand. Wouldn't the best bid for the given hand be the perfect bid? :) No... -

Adam, I don't know where you're getting your information from, but I think you're way, way, way off target with your impressions of the junior world. So much, in fact, that I would respectfully ask you to stop spreading these rumors, in case someone mistakenly interprets them as fact and brings them to the attention of anyone with clout in the ACBL/USBF. We have trouble getting funding as it is. I'm trying very hard to think of examples of the situations you've offered, and I just have no clue what you're talking about. The fact that there is a problem with the scarcity of young female players should be enough to indicate that the sample size you've drawn your generalizations from is likely about 3 but definitely less than 10. On the other hand, I can think of an example of a girl who is, in fact, a candidate to play on junior teams currently, and I assure you there aren't any barriers for her to participate on the team due to her sex. I'd even go so far as to say that 100% of the female players who legitimately deserved a place on a junior team in the past few years and went through all the steps to get on the team did not experience any of the problems you offered. Again, the sample size is two. I don't understand why you say men "likely wouldn't partner" a female player. Do you have any evidence to support such a claim? I know the members of the junior team well enough to say with a very high degree of confidence that all of us would have no problem whatsoever playing with a female if she was good enough to deserve her shot to play on the team. I can assure you we have extensive discussions about what we consider our strongest lineups, and one's sex has never been brought into the discussion. If there is a girl who deserves to be on the team but isn't, then please point her out to us, because we simply didn't know she exists and she hasn't been coming to the trials. Finally, I'll offer some insight about young women that is true of both bridge players and non-bridge players. Some of them enjoy drinking and sleeping around. Others don't. Bridge camp does not magically make women (or men) lose their morals. There is nothing "macho" about bridge camp, other than the fact that 95% of the participants are male. Do you also argue that college is not a good place to learn for serious students simply because some people on campus enjoy binge drinking? Please excuse me for further derailing this thread.
