I don't like the 3♦ bid, rising a 3+ card suit with only 3 card support is not a good idea. Depending on the agreements 2♠ and 2NT are reasonable bids, but they should show different types of hands. 2♠ is less likely to be misinterpreted, perhaps 2NT should show a stronger hand.

Reporting Psyches
hotShot replied to jillybean's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
and its this type of auction that has helped me reduce my bridge addiction considerably. I could understand that this kind of call helps to reduce anyones TD addiction. -
I think the OP was asking about: 1NT - 2something - X In this situation you are usually fighting a partscore battle. They were not impressed by your preemptive 1NT opening and your task now it to make the best possible use of the remaining bidding space. This situation will come up a lot and usually both sides will hold about the same strength and it's not clear that they have a fit. A t/o dbl seems more effective than penalty, but you need additional agreements. You need to find a way to penalty dbl them, if they don't have a fit. So the t/o dbl should carry information about responders length in their suit, so that opener has a chance to penalty pass your dbl.

If we assume that 1 in 100 players is a cheat, than each of the honest 99 players will see the remaining 99 player as suspects although only 1 is a cheat and 98 are innocent. Since the honest player have to play with suspects (since they suspect anyone) they are biased and will interpret anything unusual as cheating. This leads to the impression that cheating is a far bigger problem than it actually is.

Can anyone explain to me, why it's cool to win a poker game psyching and uncool to psyche in a bridge game?

Did you think, that your side has an agreement about this bid? Your opps are entitled to know your agreements and your partnership experience. If this has not come up before, there is nothing to disclose. Partner should not disclose his guesses to opps. If you did not have an agreement, your partner now has partnership experience he can disclose next time.

1) Was there misinformation? Yes! A failure to alert is misinformation too. 2) Were EW damaged? Yes! Beginner usually lead 4th of the unbid major, if North has a natural 3♥ bid, there is no unbid major. 3) Was the misinformation cause of the damage? Yes At this point a score adjustment for N/S is mandatory! The playing strength of E/W is such that I might consider a weighted score between 3NT-1, 3NT= and 3NT+1. 4) Did E/W contribute to their bad score by failing to play the best bridge they can? South has 7 ♦ top tricks and 2 in ♠. So a ♦ or ♠ lead will allow 3NT to make. A ♣ lead will give away an overtrick. Only leading a low ♥, capturing the ♥Q will allow EW to take 5 tricks. Look at the playing level of the pairs, South gets a "lucky lead" and instead of bringing the contract home, he gives it away again by playing ♣. At this level EW performance is to be considered incapable, but not irrational, wild or gambling. So they did not lose their right to a score adjustment. What would happen if North's 3♥ bid is alerted as "asking for stopper"? - East has a lead directing double (which I doubt with 4 HCP) - leading ♥ gets more attractive to West The old rules would give the damaged side the best probable score, the new rules allow weighted scores. Again we have to consider a weighted score between 3NT-1, 3NT= and 3NT+1.

I was not aware that burkas include earplugs. Communications experts say that 80% of the communication is nonverbal. If facial expressions (and gestures) are hidden in a burka communication is disturbed. So if this was intended as a joke, it did not work.

I wonder, if it were a religious order and not some sort of cultural norm, why could a Muslim dominated country like Turkey ban them at least at universities. (Rumor has it that female students you feel bond by tradition use wigs as substitute.)
-
With my usual partners I would have to open that 2♠ at any vul. , pass is no option.

Criticism comes from Spain (saying he mixed up facts from Spanish history) and from women in France ( because he encouraged that muslim women should were burqas ).

The level of the TD does matter here. Since this hand barely fits the rule of 18 (10♠+2♣+ 6HCP = 18) I don't want to get a score correction because the TD feels that this hand is not strong enough for a strong 2 opening or not weak enough for a weak preemptive opening. I would start with 1♠, with only 6 HCP in my hand there is not much risk that this will be passed. This is my only chance to find out something about partners minor suits holdings. A t/o / or neg. dbl from partner over LHO's ♥ bid would be encouraging. Depending on vuln. I have no problem to reenter the auction with 4-7♠ if necessary.

I have shown my strength and shape bidding 1NT, partners 4♦ is natural and final. A hesitation suggest that he was tempted to bid game, so it suggests bidding.

Or take a HTML Version from the WBF-Hompepage.

If you should always ask after opps alert, the laws would say so. As TD I would find it unlikely that you ask about every alert. Just think about Jacoby transfer, do you really ask every time? What if opps transfered last board? Do you never look at opps CC? Do you ask about bids even if you know the meaning? Someone claiming that he asks all the time is usually in fact only asking very often. What should a TD do, if he notices you were not asking after an alert? Should he award you with a procedural penalty for lying to the TD? "Always" is a requirement that is very hard to fulfill. The laws are specific about not breaking tempo unless you have a bridge reason (e.g. when you hold a singleton). If you ask about opps alert, you should have a bridge reason to do so. If you will pass regardless of opps explanation, you can ask about opps bidding at the end of the auction. This way your question won't influence the bidding and if it's your lead the influence to the play is minimal too.

Credit Card industry explains our obligations
hotShot replied to kenberg's topic in The Water Cooler
profit 17% after tax cool..pls provide proof so I can invest based on your stats i see negative. Based on this source the rate was more than 5% 2 years ago. Did the credit card companies take 23% from you than, or did they optimize their profit. Obviously the banks could reduce their costs. My question is, did the free market forces work resulting in better conditions for the customers or did the banks just keep the extra profit. -

What percentage does the Federal Reserve Bank take from a bank for the money, this bank takes as a credit? I think it's 0.25%. If the credit card company charges you with 18%, they intend to make a profit of 17.75%. Do you think that is fair? -
I think you are wrong here. If partner asks a question, he creates an UI. The worst thing to do is ask about a bid and pass. This creates the UI that you would have bid over a different meaning. A players is therefor discouraged to ask about a bid at this point of the auction, if he doesn't intend to bid. You can ask about the bid later. Following the lawful procedure, can't be UI.

I would guess that if you look at the distribution of the suit at the other 3 players, you will find, that it's a little more likely that the 2nd or 3rd trick are not ruffed by the opponents if you hold 3 cards compared to 4 cards. This would result in K or Q being a little more valuable in a 3 card suit. After you have drawn trump there is a good chance to get the 4th round trick with the 4rth J. This should make the J a little more valuable in a 4 card suit. I have no idea why the ace would gain with a 4 card suit. A wild guess would be that this is a side effect from the devaluation of K and Q.

Using XP and IE8. I have no problem to mark a part and press "bold" later.

If you are a professional athlete, you are supposed to consult the teams medical service. If they are responsible, the team has to pay you. If you take medicine from a doc who is unfamiliar with doping regulations you are stupid. We've heard that that "The doctor gave me the wrong medication" many times before and if it's true, you will suffer for other peoples abuse of this excuse. Doping is practiced by lots of athletes in all professional sports and even by lots of amateurs. I don't know what kind of sport this Manny is good in, but if he can play at the end of the season after being banned for 50 games, 15 drug tests in 5 seasons, is a rate of less than 3 times per season. This can't be effective since several drugs that are used for doping can only be detected in the first few days, while their effect lasts for weeks.

3♠ When I had bid 2♠ I thought that the ♥ shortness is a strength. Now that partner promises good ♥s this strength is gone. Before my ♠ can get a source of tricks I might have to lose to ♠K and J. If partner has short spades, he might have problems to reach my hand. Since partner did not support ♠, he is more likely to be short there and not in the minors. My hand is a nightmare in the minors. If partner has strong minors, he can bid 3NT over my 3♠.
