I agree. Also, as a sub, I hate team games. I want just tourneys. Since there often seems to be a lack of subs, why not: "Take me to the 1st seat available" and "I have a partner. Take us to a table" should fill Teams, then Tourneys, and only then go to the Bridge Clubs Add people who click "Add your name" to a tourney to a list of subs for the tourney if they don't find a partner. Change the button to "I want to play". It would also be nice if one could sub for a class of tourneys, eg, all free, or all BBO, or all ACBL.

When we download LIN files for analysis and store them, we get the hands, but little else. Could some basic info be added as notes?, eg: date/time MPs or IMPs or points DD - double dummy maxes for each suit/nt tourney name if any Then when we revisit them later we have more context. It would also be nice if some of this were in the filename too, eg, 2009-07-31-2359.92~4Hxx6~99.57%.lin 2009-12-31-2359.92~3NT-1~3.57IMPs.lin for archiving/viewing instead of 8888888.lin I would put the score (IMPs or MPs) as scored by the declarer. tOM

Sugg:Central resizers for windows/flash screen
0 carbon replied to 0 carbon's topic in Suggestions for the Software
For popup windows like the one that appears when you click (for example) the "My BBO" button at the top of the screen followed by "Convention cards", you can click and drag the corners to resize horizontally and vertically at the same time. If by "frame" you mean something else, then please clarify what you mean and I will try to respond accordingly. Also, if resizing horizontally and vertically at the same time is not what you are hoping to be able to do, please clarify that point as well. Fred Gitelman Bridge Base Inc. www.bridgebase.com I mean the basic web display of 4 tiled windows. You can adjust the position of any boundary by clicking and dragging the boundary line. It is a minor convenience, but why not allow dragging 3 (possibly 4) boundaries at a time by clicking at the intersection of the boundaries, ie, dragging left, right, up, or down. Or, if grasping any horizontal line, interpret left-right motions as affecting the vertical line as well. tOM -
Suggestion: Prevent dummy from speaking

Just to Table. You could still chat to friends or Tournament. tOM I'm thinking mainly of tournaments. I wouldn't restrict it in other situations where it's more likely all are friends. tOM -

I recommend Zscreen for Windoze. You can capture a whole screen, a window, or part of a screen easily, save it to a datetime-named file, and open it automatically in a graphic editor like Irfanview. Windows also have the app name put into the file name. I have it set up to save to c:\temp\screen prints and if I want to keep it longer, I move it elsewhere, but I usually just want to add it to an email complaint bug report. Irfanview also lets me reduce the size by reducing the number of colours or using PNG compression. tOM

I have, and there is a new flash editor, too, tho it seems to not be working right now. The problem I have with it is that insufficient info is shown. It's like microsurgery to create and edit. I would like to see nearby situations, ie, in some kind of scrolling list or tree, so if I change something, I can easily see and make associated changes, and see all the situations I have covered. tOM

The basic goal was to make it look like a standard ACBL convention card. Adding new places to type text would detract from that goal. I do understand that adding more text fields would be useful for those who have trouble adequately expressing their system in the space that exists now. In this particular case, you could just make the right hand text entry bigger, so it can read: 10 to 12 (nv 1-3) 13 to 15 (otherwise) I think that is why the ACBL left space there. Same problem with Opening Preempts. On the paper card you can indicate vul/nv, but there is no text box for that.

What constitutes "max" varies from browser to browser (and perhaps from operating system to operating system). Something like 80% of our members run Internet Explorer under Windows. Max for them is less than max for Firefox users like you (at least I think you are using Firefox based not only on your comments, but also on the picture you put up on your web site - nice dog by the way!). Anyways, it was necessary to be conservative in terms of defining these max values in order to ensure that people would not have to scroll the text fields in order to see all typed text. Sorry but I don't understand this question. Perhaps I indirectly answered in in my respose to E, but if not please clarify what you mean in F. I mean, for text input spaces, resize the font (on "show") so that the text fills the space (horizontal and vertical) available. This avoids having to scroll and makes short entries more legible - like writing bigger or smaller. This would avoid any scrolling problems, tho long entries would show very small! An alternative to automatic resizing is to allow the user to specify the text size, eg, by "bigger" or "smaller" icons when editing. Then they could see what fitted and what didn't. Then they take responsibility if different browsers screw it up. If they get neg feedback, they can change. ----- using balloons ------- Another alternative to scrolling long text entries on "show" is to show a balloon of the full text entry when you hover your cursor over it. You could show a graphic marker, e.g. a special arrow or button, to indicate there is unseen text that will be made available while hovering - or use colour hiliting. Similarly, on editing, you could open a box for entering text so the entire text can be seen. (btw, I like the new "show" function on all CC - more legible suits! :P )

A. I play 1nt 10-12 1-3 position nv, otherwise 13-15. There is nowhere to indicate this on the card. There should be a text space following these entries. This is also true for other cases where there is space on the card, but no underline. It would be worthwhile to put a text area there for extra explanation everywhere there is space and it makes sense, eg, preempts may vary in strength vul/nv. B. Tabs go across. They should stay within groups, eg, replies to 1nt C. Will the alertable bids automatically be alerted/announced when CC is in use? D. Why not centre text entries for max legibility? E. Space inadequate for 2 bids & responses - please increase to max. Otherwise hard to describe flannery responses, etc. F. Why not resize all text to fit spaces? Up or down? Then allow 32+ characters in all fields G. How about colouring the types of convention cards (ACBL/FD/general/...) in the CC list. H. When you "Show" a convention card, how about generating a 4-bit GIF or PNG which HTML can resize 100% in vertical and horizontal dimensions so the whole card can be seen? eg, http://TomTrottier.com/Precision.html Looking good! tOM

Alas, the flash i/f, at least in FF3, does not allow F11 to maximise the screen. You have to do this BEFORE you run the client flash. tOM

Currently, it's hard to find others playing the same niche systems, eg, Precision, ACOL, Blue Club, etc. You only find out when you look at each profile. Why not have a search function for user profiles? Preferably regular expressions (eg <Prec*> ) but even plain text would help. tOM

Currently, we see each player's delay while bidding or playing and can make assumptions about why they delayed. In big tournaments, players see only the total delay. In BBO, why not do the same thing. Instead of posting bids right away, post after all the other players have bid, showing all bids at once. And the same for the play of the hand. Show the all cards played before you at once. This would avoid unauthorized information and promote good bridge playing. I see 2 arguments against it: - Not similar to club/home bridge - where we do make conclusions about P or opps - would cause game to be slower, as we wait for all other hands to bid/play before we can think about what we want to do. OTOH, then we could play singletons on auto! But it would improve our bridge, if not our psychological skills. tOM

Currently, many people get irritated when dummy speaks to the table and then complain to the TD. Why not disallow posts to Table once declarer has played from dummy to the first trick, and renable it when the hand ends. This would allow the "GLP" politeness but ensure dummy doesn't interfere at all. After all, it's hard to revoke in BBO. tOM

Currently, BBO-generated LIN files (and the movies) keep a record of the deal, bidding, and play. They could contain much more discussion - as the LIN files created by Fred and others in their old column shows. At the very least, how about recording the result inside the LIN or movie, eg 31.2% or 5.6 IMPs or -9.1 IMPs, along with the tournament or club, date, and time. This should be displayed when the LIN is displayed. At the most, they could display the complete traveller. tOM :D

How does that all work with the Flash i/f...... tOM ;)
-
I agree. a column for "Boards left" in tourney listings would be great. Best to show the max. Or maybe "Minutes left" since clockings differ. tOM
-
In the results page, only a link to the player's line is given. Why not also a link to the Tourney which would then have the links to the LINs and the travellers? tOM

1. I agree. In Pending and Running tourney lists, there should be a checkbox with each tourney so people can sign up (or opt out) as subs easily, and also see their status. If a type of tourney is repeated, eg, hourly ACBL speedball, then propagate the sub registration to later tourneys too, so log as the user is logged on. 2. To further populate the sub pool, why not include all unsuccessful registrants as subs when the tourney starts? They DID want to play! tOM

These all show here:  :o ;) :P :D  B) <_< :) :(   Why not in BBO chat? tOM

Improving the tournament process
0 carbon replied to modicum's topic in Suggestions for the Software
I agree with 1-board rounds. Yes, more delays - half the time a delay every board! But can't BBO be flexible with the movement? IOW, instead of having a fixed movement with everything planned from the start, match pairs together when they finish. Then the only constraints might come toward the end when you have fewer unplayed pairs to play against. Not a problem in big tournaments. You would also have to watch ahead so that you preserved at least one unplayed pair for everyone for every round. After all, there are no physical considerations (Boards up, players down, duplicate decks, ....) to worry about. I also support having the choice of "Swiss" style Victory Point pairs where pairs of each round are matched on scores. This, of course, means guaranteed delays waiting for the final result, but why not try it, clocked? A fair scoring system would have to be worked out, though.... tOM -
It would be nice to be able to - dowload the players' convention cards (eg WBF pdf) used - on entry, to load commentary for the last 7 minutes or so, preceded by a "---------------------------" tOM
