Huh? Why is it asking the impossible of pard. If he has a maximum he will move. For instance if partner has KQxxx of hearts and we bid 4D he would have to be braindead to bid 4H. If partner has Hxxxx of hearts and the CK he would again have to be braindead not to move over 4D. I am only really baffled by this comment because it is coming from you, the king of trying for slam whenever it's slightly possible, here it is easily possible and on the hands where it is very good partner will always move, and partner will probably not be moving too much with hands where slam is terrible or the 5 level is in jeopardy (maybe Qxxx of hearts and the DA where you get to 5H), but overall when you get past 4H after bidding 4D it will be a great thing.

What is the vulnerability and form of scoring? 3H or 2N both seem reasonable, I think I like 2N. Partner might try to get back to hearts anyways via 4H or 3S, and if he bids 3m thats obviously great. If he bids 3N RHOs failure to raise and our big HCP majority favors partner having a stopper. 3H is probably fine, we are a bit heavy on overall values but it's fine given our missing trump. Depending on the form of scoring and vulnerability partner rates to have a very good 5 card suit or 6 anyways. 2S and pass both might be possible also, pass only if you are white at MP with an aggressive pard, but I still would never do it (probably because of my 2 level overcalling style). 2S I think is an overbid but it gives partner room to bid 2N or 3m which will help us find the right strain while never getting to 3N with no stopper (unlike a 2N bid).

To balance or not to balance
JLOL replied to TimG's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Wow, I find this thread pretty shocking. I thought this was a wtp X. Also I think 2N is really terrible, regardless of whether you want to pass or bid, if you are bidding it has to be double. For starters partner could easily have 5 spades, he is not just going to automatically overcall 2S with 10 to 12 points and 5 spades, and second if he has 4 spades then playing 2S will often be your best possible spot (3 7 card fits), and thirdly when 2N is wrong it can be a huge disaster doubled whereas it's going to be much harder to double you at the 2 level when you have a 7 card fit at imps, and lastly they are more likely to bid 3H over 2S than over 3m. Sure it's possible you play the 33 fit on a bad day after reopening X, but that won't happen that often relative to all the times 2S is your best spot or least dangerous spot. I don't understand the pessimism though, we will push them to 3H sometimes, and it will be our hand for a partscore sometimes, and they will almost always make 2H (and the times they don't partner probably is passing our X anyways). They are not automatically just doubling you for a number every time, even when you are going down 2 you usually won't get cracked. -
Now for the real story... Joe got home last night and I asked him if he was declarer on this hand. He said no Curtis was, and his first reaction as dummy was "wtf" but then Curtis explained that he thought very few people would find the CK lead. Given that few people would find the CK lead, if hearts were 32 he was screwed no matter what he did (it is very easy to make 5 on a diamond lead, and the best he can do now is make 4). Thus he made an anti percentage play and played for 41 hearts in which case the field would only make 4 on a diamond lead anyways so he could get back to average. Joe and I both now think Curtis made the right play (as he usually seems to do!). edit: Just saw Edmunte also said this, wd Edmunte.

My Pard Bid Fourth Suit Forcing
JLOL replied to Winstonm's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
3D showing 6+ hearts is also way too poorly defined and frequent. Again you are using up a whole level of bidding room and forcing partner to sometimes guess what to do and not clarify his hand at all. I don't think it is overloaded or overly ambiguous to be bidding 2H with both hand types. You have a ton of room. As for gnashers example auction of: 1H 1S 2C 2D 2H 3H I don't understand why you are concerned about opener not having shown his sixth heart yet, but are not equally concerned with 1H 1S 2C 2D 3D 3H where 3D shows 6 hearts, and responder has not shown his THIRD heart. Heck, responder will probably need to bid 3H on a stiff sometimes. Giving responder room to clarify his hand type when he has made 1 natural bid so far compared to opener having made 2 natural bids is really important. You can easily survive after 1H 1S 2C 2D 2H 3H not having shown a 6th heart yet, for starters if opener ever cuebids diamonds then he had 6 hearts, and most likely if he makes 2 slam tries period he had 6 hearts. And even if he doesn't get to show his 6th heart you have still set trumps at the 3 level, responder is known to have 3 hearts, and you can focus on whether or not you have the values for slam anyways. The 6th heart will be evaluated by opener as a good thing for slam. In other auctions if opener has not been able to rebid his hearts with 6 because perhaps they were quite poor then responder will later be able to show tertiary support of hearts anyways and back into the fit, and usually opener would be fine rebidding his hearts anyways with 64. -
Also some of those are caddies who join so they can play the midnight games lol

I like 5D. BTW for anyone considering 4D it shows the same as 1D p 1H p 4D would show.

Please just ban system regulation posts! lol

You must have the most precise judgement ever if there are hands you would bid 3N with opposite a 2N "might or might not have a major" but pass 2N opposite a 2N "always has a major."

With this hand it doesnt really matter what partner wants when he doubles. It's not like he can have bad spades and Qxx of hearts and bid 2S.

How to let partner in on the joke
JLOL replied to MarkDean's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I strongly prefer bidding to show an offensive minimum and passing to show a defensive minimum or 4 card overcall. There are a lot of ways to show extra values, helping partner know when to compete to the 3 level is much more important. There is quite a difference in a 5431 8 count and a 5332 10 count with defensive values. -
1) 3N 2) 1S 3) 4H
-
4D planning to pass 4H. A little wimpy admittedly.
-
3N is really a masterminding bid, what can go wrong by bidding 3D and describing your hand? If partner wants to play in 6D because of your 3D bid how bad can that be lol. If partner just wants a spade stopper he can bid 3S over 3D.

You don't gain even if they don't cover with K876 unless RHO has 4 diamonds also since you will need to ruff a club in dummy otherwise. I would agree with your line if dummy had say KJTx of diamonds, but with this blocked position I think it's definitely wrong.

Winning the DA and playing ace king of hearts was terrible. If you just win the DK and play a spade to the jack you preserve legitimate chances of making when its king third of spades onside and LHO has Qxx of hearts and 3 or less diamonds or if RHO has stiff K of spades and Qxx of hearts to go with 3 or less diamonds. You also might make if LHO has the SK and wins it and forgets to play a club. Now if you play the SQ and it goes K A you have no sure entry to dummy, you have to play the CK and knock out the ace. Now because of your crafty AK of hearts play you lose when RHO has 5 hearts and KTx of spades and the CA anyways, or if LHO has 5 hearts and the CA and RHO started with KT doubleton of spades, or if someone can win and get a diamond ruff, or if someone has 6 clubs and you get overruffed there. I think the combination of ALL of these potential ruffs greatly outweigh the small chance of an opp not covering the queen with Kx(x) of spades. In case anyone was wondering Kx of spades onside has the same likelihood as KTx onside.

Legality of artificial openings and responses
JLOL replied to straube's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
It's like we have the same thread over and over again... If you want to have a guaranteed 10+ page thread just start one that has something to do with convention regulation or charts lol. Then the same things can be said over and over again. -
SEVEN tricks vulnerable against not is just stupid. I guess now I understand why people might strongly dislike 3N so much though. If you can open 3N with 7 solid red/white then I would hate 3N also.
