After making the switch to atheism, I assumed I would always be one. But having grown older and wiser, I have seen the light. Joss Whedon is god.

haha. Obviously you bid when they overcall 3H, what kind of question is that? Play partner for some values when they preempt, he can still have a pretty good hand to pass 3H and playing him for about 6 points is not a stretch. Also he may have some heart help, RHO hasn't raised and LHO usually has 7 so we can often either double stop hearts or shut LHO out etc etc. If we were w/r I would consider passing sometimes I guess, but w/r is really its own game when it comes to stuff like this. Likewise, almost always pass (or double with a doubleton heart depending on hand) when it goes 1H p 3H. LHO can have a good hand now, and partner's max point count is quite low, especially when he has short hearts (which we know he does if we have 3 hearts). Playing him to average 6 points when he has a stiff heart and passed 1H is silly since he would have bid unless specifically 3163 or something... he is probably closer to 3 points, and we have no chance of shutting the opps our (5-4 fit). Bidding 3N here is suicide. Obviously if you have a good source of tricks and a double stopper you can make an exception but it would be quite rare. 2H p 3H is the only one where I would use some judgement based on the quality of my hand and especially my heart stopper (for instance with Axx of hearts I would always bid 3N). I would bid much more often than I would pass though for sure, partner can pass 2H with a pretty reasonable hand and LHO has advertised a weak hand. Edit: I also consider it completely standard to pass with 18-19 balanced on the auction 1C (1H) p (2H) ? lol at bidding after 1C (1H) p (3H)

655321 will play it better than you :( Oh, partner is declaring, well presumably someone of 655321s ability will have a better partner than you then! Also I didn't think you disagreed with me since the specified vul was VUL, and you said pass at MP 3N at imps which is the same as me! But damn you and your children if you bid white at imps!
-
lol you have a yarb. I'm in for 3N vul at imps just because fck it I have 13 and a few spot cards and I won't play 2N! but I would def pass white at imps and def at MP.

If I really trust partner don't I play a diamond? I think he can only pitch a diamond from a stiff.

doubling 2C with this hand is LOLworthy. You have a void and a good 6 bagger and 2 defensive tricks opposite a partner who passed 1D X. You could at least put some thought into your example hands sometimes. I also think doubling freely with bad hands in general opposite a pass is pretty bad, obviously with 4450 you will have to double light but you should hate it. Those hands are going to be pretty uncommon compared to 4441 (43)51 and (434)2 which should be reasonably good.

So they make 180 sometimes big deal. If partner is lighter with a stiff club, our hand is almost completely worthless to him (yes we have a jack and our clubs might stop them from playing clubs and force them to play other suits, but we still lack actual tricks for him), and we are almost always down. Meanwhile if partner is 18-19 balanced (not unlikely at all), or just a strong/prime 4441/(43)51, we are going to beat them a LOT sometimes and might still go down in 2D. The "big risk" on this type of hand of turning a +90 or +110 into a -180 just seems non existent on this hand when we are so poor for offense and potentially quite good for defense. I see it more like turning -50 or -100 into -180 sometimes, which an upside of turning a minus into a small plus, or possibly into +300 or +500. Really seems like a no brainer pass to me especially at imps. By the way, I think south should pull 2D to 2H and it should show 4432 though I have never thought about this before seeing this thread. I absolutely would not sit for 2D with 4432, north should frequently bid 2D on 3 even with a 4 card major possibly imo, and they cannot have 5 diamonds obviously. At worst we go from a 4-3 to a new 4-3, at best from a 3-3 to a 4-4 or a 4-3 to a 4-4 (the latter being quite likely).
-
Really, RHO bidding 5S on ace fifth and out seems really unlikely also. The actual layout actually kind of makes sense, shows at least why RHO thought a trump was safe, and RHO had a side card so that's why he bid with only 5 spades, and LHO had an extra spade so that's why he bid.. I guess.
-
Yes I was agreeing with your line in case I wasn't clear...I just wanted you to feel happier about your choice!
-
Han, Something to consider. There is a significant chance RHO will pitch a heart from Jxx, especially if we pitch 2 from dummy early on (very important!). It is unlikely he'll see any need to keep the additional one. Not trying to insult RHO but he is clearly a very inexperienced player as he bid 3S NF then 5S (impossible), and also shifted to a trump in this position. Since everything is pretty random anyways (I agree slight edge to the squeeze in a vacuum but it's basically pick em imo), that extra edge could be huge and will occur more frequently than people would like to think imo.
-
Heh, I mean I think you know this is a wtp pass dude, sorry you missed 6D when partner has ace sixth and out or w/e. Ok, maybe you just missed 5 and they were cold for 4s ;)
-
6D obv, partner obv has a stiff spade since they JUMPED, and he doesnt have support for hearts since he PASSED, and LHO has clubs since we are stiff, so that leaves partner with the DIAMONDS baby!
