  1. Thx, we were 18 VPs back of 1st I think (20 point scale), and we got a complete blitz when we played them so pretty much we had zero chance to catch them, so very happy about this!
  2. Obv pass, it's MATCHPOINTS.
  3. I would not, and in general am a pretty huge fan of not upgrading except with the nuts in MP. In USA almost everyone plays strong NT so I can stay with the field by not upgrading and hope to find an edge later on where it's less random and more certain. I also don't want to end up in a thin game that requires good play or whatever to make since I'll be freerolling myself in a negative way (if I make I get the same very good board I would have got had I not been in game and mad it, but if I go down I get a zero instead of an average or maybe even average plus). I suppose if half the field played weak NT and half strong or whatever it would be different since I couldn't stay with the field, but I also do not view this hand as strong enough for an upgrade in general.
  4. Yes, I agree with this and that is why I was tentative about redoubling when I saw this hand being posted. When I try to think about it logically though, the "non lead directing double" which presumably could be made on 3 small is so utterly retarded because it's telling us that clubs probably break and also telling us that the opening bidder has few values in clubs. Where do the values rate to be if not with the opening bidder, obv with us right? So it just seems like we should be exploiting this retarded bid by redoubling with 4 reasonable clubs since partner is such a strong favorite to have pretty strong clubs as well. Of course if it was a normal lead directing X I would want partner to play us for AQT9x or whatever. But it just seems like logically their double is so dumb, and logically for us to have the same requirements to redouble it is also really dumb. On top of that, it also seems given the retarded nature of their double it is a gigantic mistake to not play a penalty redouble of it. They're almost literally asking for it lol. But I like to redouble lead directing bids in general, so I'm sure you can imagine how I feel about doubling lead inhibiting doubles...
  5. It's always bothered me that I can't double with this hand. For a while the conventional wisdom was that you should promise a doubleton for this double, now I think most people have moved towards you can have a singleton, but the conventional wisdom is still that you cannot double with this hand. Anyways, I dunno, I also like partner to be able to pass happily with 4 reasonable hearts as Andy said, so it is just too risky to double. I would probably just have passed but I think 2S is a pretty cool bid.
  6. Meh when he plays a spade make sure to pop queen or else he's just going to put in the ten. It really shouldn't work but you never know, people suck!
  7. 2H always with 5440. 2C with 5044 unless you are strong enough to move over a minimum rebid, then bid 2D (like 16+).
  8. what would you think partner would misunderstand it as?
  9. Obv yes. We didn't open in 3rd seat and partner didn't bid over 1C as a PH, are we really scared of him going nuts or something? They almost surely have a game so unless I get doubled in 1S I'm not too worried, and I don't see that happening very often. A much more likely scenario is that they get to 3N and partner is on lead and we save 1+ trick by partner leading a spade rather than the something else he was probably going to lead. Since this will probably happen about 20x as often imo as getting doubled in 1S or having partner bid 2S and getting doubled there, I think at matchpoints it is really obvious to bid.
  10. I barely know him but he is definitely a really nice guy
  11. I am not as confident as some but I would XX.
  12. Red/white 3S is fine for me since my partner will expect a good hand. It's still a max obv but I like it then. White/red I like 4S a lot, we might miss a slam but we put tons of pressure on them. I do not think it is wrong to say that white/white anything but 4S or 1S is a joke even if you would open 3S red/white though. I would say that anything but 3S or 1S is a joke if it were red/white.
  13. Yep except I'm not tempted at all with the north hand really. South is under pressure and has to bid 4S somewhat aggressively.
  14. 4S is probably fine but I prefer 1S.
  15. Absolutely penalty, good thread title it applies here.
  16. 2C because I have 4 of them
  17. Yes, when responder has shown values then a new suit by the T/O Xer is forcing. This includes even a freebid at the 1 level like 1C X 1D 1S p 2H is forcing. Maybe in the modern game it shouldn't be since the 1S bid could be very light, but that's how it is currently played. CERTAINLY when partner has jumped though a new suit is forcing.
