I'd rather be in 7♥ than 3♣. I think both members of this pair bid equally stupidly - They deserve each other. 50% North 50% South 100000% whoever taught both players to play bridge.

These were my thoughts as well -- I figured a LOL would do the trick. Just the thought of playing 3♦ as that is making me sick to my stomach.

You're right, sorry. I missed that South led the CK at one table, and the CA at another -- But still, I think a case like that still makes for an uneven playing field. Sometimes it is also just knowing when the robots tend to make mistakes (See my "6 Diamonds Making Eight?" thread).

That is quite a silly idea, and IMO, extremely bad advice. There is no reason why you cannot need to trump losers even if you have 33 combined HCP.

I suppose the definition of a sport might be: "An activity whose primary players' average age is under 55" :)

True, but if the concern is being able to show clubs at some point, starting with 1♣ seems to put you one step behind. Why is this hand really worth so much? The AQ♠ aren't pulling their weight. [Not trying to argue, just interested in why you feel this hand is worth an upgrade, as obviously you have a lot more experience in these situations than I do.]

2♦ - A general purpose force, pretty much like New Minor Forcing. I don't have any plans to bid slam on this hand unless partner shows extras at some point.

I tend not to upgrade hands unless I am worried about something bad happening if I don't. Even then, I don't usually upgrade unless my long suit is a major -- Otherwise it's too hard to show my hand somewhat accurately if they compete. I'm happy to open this 1♦.

In this case, I don't really know why GIB was bidding 3♠. With my ubermax and undisclosed 3 card support I made a pushy 4♠ call, however the problem here lies in GIB's 3♠ call which was peculiar at best. GIB's 3♠ call should be a GF, not some random 4-5 yarb. Once again the redouble seems to show extra "Total Points" but say nothing else -- I really don't see how this is a practical use. GIB's line of play here was slightly less-than-optimal as well.
