  1. 2 tricks for declarer. you can't go giving tricks to the defence for nothing. a penalty for dummy so dummy can't go doing that sort of thing to protect his partner from carvery.
  2. it's far more common and useful to play them in competition.
  3. yes right. playing strength to open 2C, but not necessarily much in defence. smacking 4S would then show it had the defence for a 2C opener as well, i.e. a good quota of aces as opposed to something like kqjxxx kqjxxxx which is 11 playing tricks but no defence.
  4. noone. fortunately noone's suggesting double is penalty.
  5. 3c a little fib. lacking a heart but we've got extra shape and a great club suit. we'll often end up defending in which case we'll be very happy to have shown clubs.
  6. jumping to 4d shows the absolute nuts. south with 6 cards in his partner's suits has a good hand for the occasion. north could double 4S though with his transferable values. this should be a subtle reminder to south to support diamonds.
  7. i certainly don't run the jack. even when it works there's a good chance (pretty much 100% imo) of losing a trump promotion. i'd finesse though. i doubt the queen affects rho's decision to overcall in hcp terms so i just go on vacant spaces.
  8. anyway back to the question. east has made an unusual pair of bids, not bidding 2NT on either the first or 2nd round. this should mean he has an unusual hand. 5-7 maybe so i'd be too scared to double.
  9. sadly in my partnerships 5nt isn't the right response to a queen ask. i play that as showing soft extras.
  10. why on earth do we expect the bidding to continue? we have a fair number of points. the opponents seem to have no fit but lho very likely has more diamonds than clubs. partner's already protected once.
  11. 1) 2h would be forcing in any system 2) yes, 4h is fast arrival - you bid 4th suit then 4H as a stronger 4H bid
  12. i'd deal with it by de-editing the OP to make my answer look daft.
  13. well now the defender does know which card declarer wanted so he can play happily. no problem. stop whining. for future reference, 'club' always means 'low club'.
  14. 3 - you're 2nd in. it shows a constructive hand
  15. most people on bbo are very bad and often cheating like troopers. there's no point looking at results from other random tables. 1s-3nt-6h is entirely ridiculous.

  17. not entirely true. cashing all the diamonds and spades squeezes south. you can them throw him in on a club for a heart in the aj.
  18. He's not being serious. He seems to get off on making himself look like an idiot. Noone who's capable of using the internet can be so bad and self-deluded.
  19. majors score more than minors. you only clearly lose out by bidding 2H when partner's 22 in the majors and even then if he's 2236 you're no worse off than passing 2D. 2D leaves you in a worse fit opposite (32)26, 3325, 3334 and an equal length but worse scoring fit opposite (32)44, 3343 and opposite all the hands with 5D you're normally going to score as well in a 43 major fit. anyway with an 11 count you should still bid 2NT over 2d because no trumps scores considerably better than diamonds whether it's the 1,2,3,4,5,6 or 7 level.
  20. pass. this hand is pretty minimal for a 2h overcall perforce it's less than minimum for a 3h overcall.
