ok the simple answer is north was just wrong. the 3 level is for shape, not cuebids. yes, south might not have 4, but if so, he'll probably be probing for 3NT with weak hearts in which case when north shows spade support south can correct.

off the top of my head:- 1C-1H-2S canape with diamonds 1C-1H-2D-2H waiting 1C-1H-2D-2H-2S hearts doesn't cause too much trouble on finding your major fit whilst saving space over 2D perhaps you're using 2S already for some other awkward shapes though

most people on bbo are clueless. don't attribute to malice what you can attribute to stupidity.

Our short/nebulous minor defense

if you play ghestem, 3C should never contain clubs. that way you can bid it with strong hands. -
Balance or no Balance

perfect shape and it's 50s, what's not to love? -
Oh dear. Does no-one read the bidding notes? 1s was a transfer to 1nt. It didn't show diamonds and there's absolutely no reason to think rho is short in them.
-
Partner has akqjx q axx qxxx so 7s is pretty cold. I think we can all agree 4h was the wrong bid, but I thought the other hand should bid on anyway. Fwiw the players in question are globally known.

T9xx Aktx Tx Akx You open 1c, p bids 1s, you bid 2s, p splinters with 4h, next? A) sign off B) cue C) blackers D) would have opened 1nt E) would have raised to 3s

The normal uk/us approach is that 2 spades on hand 1 shows a suitable doubleton because with 3 spades and an unbalanced minimum (the given hand type) you raise spades immediately. With 3514 and a hand too strong to raise to 2s you rebid 2c and jump to 3s next. Wrt Robson you have to very careful. He pitches his stuff at a very low level. In his bridge club for example there are no stop cards and, I think (I've never been there myself), no alerts or announcements as you get in real bridge tournaments. Similarly he teaches that reverses don't show extras. This is hopeless from a theoretical viewpoint but, no doubt, good from his because it gets the punters playing (and paying).

1 spade was a transfer to 1nt.
-
3nt from p is totally normal. Your Opps should stop whining.

I play 2nt as 5 card stayman (allows you to find 44 major fits without revealing opener's majors and allows responder to show (31)(54) shapes.) 2spades as invitational balanced, invitational with diamonds, gf with clubs or weak with clubs. 3 clubs as weak or gf with diamonds Vis a vis 4 xfers all you lose is the semi invitational club transfer, I. E. Opener's option to break it.

Hook hearts and eliminate. Seems unlikely east will make a takeout double of clubs with a small singleton/void diamond

Easy double

Why do opps always bid my suit?

Easy 2s bid. You're too strong to wait around and hope to catch up -
Options After A Takeout Double

You 3nt bidders did spot the colours, right? -
I think 2c is pathetic
-
Yes 2h. 3h is for people who don't understand weak nt

How Effective Is A Weak Two Diamonds Bid?
wank replied to FelicityR's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
According to the stats it generates on average over 2 imps per boards or 58% when it's employed. -
Nice site

More importantly Gerber was a bad bid on your hand. Your partner has shown 12ish plus points. Added to your 17 that makes 29 plus. To make 6nt you should have 33 plus. You perforce have no reason to want to bid slam, no matter how many aces your partner has. It's a common error among intermediate players to employ ace asking methods when they are lacking the points/tricks for slam. You could bid 4nt to ask if your partner has extra points.

GCC rules for weak two-suiters?
wank replied to Flem72's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
The gcc doesn't regulate natural bids because they didn't have the right to do when it was formulated. -
Cue bids and Multi 2D
wank replied to pstansbu's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
use the other major as a cuebid. 99% of the time opener's suit is the one partner didn't overcall. the 1% of the time when it's not, you probably want to be in no trumps. -
you can do that when the opps have an invitational auction - they won't redouble, there are unlikely to be overtricks and it might go 2 or 3 off. if you do that when the opps are largely unlimited and turn out to have 31 HCP, you'll find they redouble and score 1080. increasing their score from 620 to 1080 or even just 790 is bad odds when you're only trying to increase your score from 100 to 200 or from 50 to 100. most importantly when you double you're also giving information away which results in the opps often making 1 trick more than they would. if that changes the result from 4S-2 to 4Sx-1 then you've gained nothing. if it changes the score from 4S-1 to 4SX= it's a catastrophe.
