  1. FWIW, From past experience, I've learn't not to claim unless I have all the remaining tricks irrespective of the order in which they are played. And this is something I sometimes advice my partners to do. Not all claims save time, a disputed claim results in more time and mental energy being spent. So by not claiming until it is overwhelmingly obvious, you may be doing yourself and the opponents a favor.
  2. Its trick one, was the long hesitation long for trick one?
  3. Feel free to suggest for the language(s) you select what you think are some of the best examples of bridge literature.
  4. I thought this was an interesting read - pinch of salt and all that notwithstanding. http://cam.bridgeblogging.com/
  5. Deleting history is often a bad idea. It makes it difficult for a new user reading the thread to understand what's going on, and makes the life of moderators very hard. The way some forums deal with this problem is to by default not show posts that have a certain number of downvotes (4 for example). User interested in reading these posts would click an 'expand' button, but they would be warned that some number of forum users thought these posts are not worth the time to read. As a stopgap, perhaps BBO could implement a feature where a moderator downvote would hide a post but not delete it. The assumption being this would not be too difficult for the moderators.
  6. Any particular reason why you don't want to use the browser version? AFAIK, development of the windows client has stopped, so debugging a infrequent 64 bit platform specific bug may not be high priority. I'm on a 64 bit machine too, was using the client under WINE on linux, but moved to the browser version since the wine client didn't look as good.
  7. EDITED - South has 4 clubs South, everyone vul. ♠ x ♥ Kxx ♦ AJTxx ♣ JTxx Regional open pairs, ACBL. West opens 1NT (good 14 to 17). N hesitates before passing (agreed by all). East transfers to spades, W bids 2S and after N and E pass south balances with 3D, N bids 3H over 3D and gets to play it there. NS play natural overcalls after 1NT and X would be penalty. Director was called after the 3D bid, and after the hand when 3H makes. How would you rule about the 3D bid?
  8. Fantastic advertising is overstating it. The best advertising for BBO is IMO word of mouth, I think I told about 6 people about BBO while I was in New Orleans last year, and some of them are my friends on BBO now. In fact, if anyone is getting a free ride, IMO it is the ACBL and all the other organizations whose stated goal is promoting bridge, while it is Fred and BBO that have made the most significant innovations in promoting and popularizing bridge in the past 100 years.
  9. They're citizens, period. The point is we should not make up arbitrary rules about how some citizens are more genuine than others. The Olympics is all about disallowing professional athletes for reasons of "purity". Oh wait, they have become whores and are no longer pure.
  10. The desire to represent your country should come from within, and not be enforced from without.
  11. So if I'm willing to work for Company A for $50000, but not for $30000 that makes me what? oh you're talking about sex, not work. Right, so we should moralize and legalize what happens between two consenting adults, and furthermore shame the woman. How about: Woman walks up to a man in a bar and says "Would you sleep with me for a million dollars?" Man thinks about it for a couple minutes and say "Yes?" Woman replies, "Great, how about for $500?" Man say "What do you think I am?" Woman says "I know what you are, now we're just arguing about the price" What do you call that man? Or will your example only work if the genders are reversed? Funny thing is, your analogy is as hilarious as awm's was. And as wrong.
  12. Comparing soccer and bridge is hilarious - ManU's revenue was upwards of 400 million dollars last year. When bridge starts generating even 1% of that revenue, then perhaps analogies can be drawn between bridge professionals and soccer professionals, and between soccer clubs and bridge clubs.
  13. For a walled off community like BBO, it wouldn't matter. However, for generic community forums like reddit (www.reddit.com) and hacker news (news.ycombinator.com) voting posts up/down is at the heart of their business model and the voting algorithms and limits are carefully designed. This includes a cap on upvotes/downvotes
  14. these are not allowed in the playing area - they would have to play headless It is unclear from the CoC whether homo-headless are allowed to compete in the Rosenblum. Besides, some claim the opponents would have to complain for the rule to be enforced.
  15. Please don't go about casting unfavorable light on Meckwell. Clearly they were permitted to pass one copy back and forth, so I don't know what is this onus you're talking about. The onus would be on Meckwell if there is a policy that a pair must have two copies. Does anybody know if there is such a policy? I don't think is is "clear" that conditions of contest allow sharing of one copy just because a pair chose to do it that way. Even if it is against the rules, the opposing pair would likely have to object in order for the rule to be enforced. Right, so if a table of 4 decides to play counter-clockwise on odd numbered boards, the rules wouldn't apply since the opponents are in compliance? Sounds like a great idea for a prank to me.

  17. Whether the defenses published by ACBL are adequate or not, is a subject for discussion, in another thread. I see no real purpose for your posting this table occurrence except to somehow cast an unfavorable light on Meckstroth-Rodwell. Also, FYI, ACBL covers more than just USA (Bermuda, Mexico, USA, Canada) . This thread is about WBF events and as far as I understand, was intended to inform people about what the WBF CoC say because the regulations may not have been known in general. And the poll shows that the majority actually did not know about them. There is a conspiracy by the communists and socialists to cast Meckwell in an unfavorable light given half a chance. Fortunately for us, we have peachy to shine unfavorable lights on those who like to shine unfavorable light. Fred/Uday should see the light and make peachy a moderator of these forums pronto.
  18. Re: the new forum software, instead of having the forum users find out they can't login since there was a username clash, isn't it better if BBO finds out from the data a tentative list of usernames that it thinks will clash (same id different IPs) and then proactively send an email to the forum user to determine if he is active and/or if he is the same user?
  19. This incident happened when I was relatively new to bridge - One time I landed in 3NT, doubled by LHO and before leading, she remarked to her partner "He's going down (just) like before". I remember being annoyed by this, and after the tournament asked one of the directors at my club what I should have done. She said that she would treat that statement as a claim, and ask LHO to describe her line of play. Edit : Background was I had played the previous hand in a silly 3NT contract that went down quite a few.

  22. I dont think Americans will watch more soccer until the players are more interested in playing than in play acting. FTFY Ah, given what passes for wrestling on the west side of the pond, I find that hard to believe! Yes, but can they compete with such fine actors who dabble in soccer? For your viewing pleasure: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQL-NV5qmBU
  23. I dont think Americans will watch more soccer until the players are more interested in playing than in play acting. FTFY Americans love acting in sports....that is not an issue. If anything we want more acting not less. Or perhaps you mean gambling like illustrated here ? http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/europe/5164194.stm

  25. I think you are both misquoting Jan and taking her seriously out of context. Jan's original comment from which the "sensible" approach has been taken was: Without wanting to put words into Jan's mouth, I think she is quite rightly observing that there is a huge grey area between Green and Yellow which requires interpretation and judgement on the part of players to decide how to classify their systems. My interpretation of Jan's comment is that she considers it "sensible" to treat a system which isn't overtly Red and is pretty close to Green as Green. Discounting the non-authoritative email sent to Paul, which doesn't directly say that having a short club makes your system Red anyway, one only needs to look at the WBF System Policy and its tie-in to the Law 40B1(a) concept of "may not be readily understood and anticipated by a significant number of players in the tournament" to conclude that having a short club does not of itself make a system Red. From this thread, the only person who has made a good faith effort to determine whether a short club system is RED or GREEN by asking the WBF is paul, and disregarding his communications with the WBF is the height of hubris. Its a shame that the WBF is not interested in issuing an authoritative statement regarding this.
