Double, what else? Wins when partner has penalty or major. Loses only when he has clubs and I should be declaring 3NT.

Another interesting overcall situation
Flameous replied to Flameous's topic in Interesting Bridge Hands
I think that here there is more point in 4♠ being natural. Assuming 5 card major openings, you generally don't want to play in a suit that is 5-0 but 4-1 makes sense on a lot more hands. This is of course assuming no psyches... I chose to pass and wait for developments and it continued 1♥ - P - 1♠ - P 2♣ - P - P - I bid 4♠ now, but what would 3♣ mean? Does it ask for a stopper expecting something like this? Partner had ♣A and nothing else. With little help from defence 4♠ made but 3NT would have been a better contract. Oh and everybody had their bid... B) -
Before you get to speak you hear 1♥ - P - 1♠ - Looking at AKQJxxx KQTx A x What's your choice?
-
4NT, natural. This time I trust partner to hold one trick :D
-
I don't know, are you guys a bit slow or something  It's just simply a hand where with that club ace lead 4H makes while NS can play a grand in clubs or diamonds. (Clubs game have to be in right hand) I'd be interested to hear how the bidding went since this seems quite absurd to some point.
-
Put a king into my other major and it's a 3C, now 3D.
-
1. Double, might be the only chance to enter the auction. 2. I'll bid 1H, both actions lie one card and I rather lie with overcall than double. 3. Easy double.

Bidding plan with 2-2-5-4
Flameous replied to EricK's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
At MP, almost always open /rebid 1NT. At Imps only when my major holdings look like it. -
I don't want to be defending 2C so I agree with 2D. Now W should act and bid 2S. Looking at his clubs he can expect me to hold either 2650 or 3640. He knows KQ of S are good cards anyhow so he can safely show some life. After raise to 3S west is in a hard spot. I can't see reasons for raise. I think the auction would end there with me... although vul imp... Maybe I'd find some reason raise anyhow :)

What does this dble mean?
Flameous replied to fyrish's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I somehow think partner's ideal hand for this auction is 4414. It has both, takeout and penalty in it so no matter what partner does, it has to be a good decision. Only thing I would be sure is that p doesn't hold diamonds. (And I'm pretty sure I do) -
Partner's double is practically forced so I don't want to hang him for doing it. I'll go low with 2H. I trust that partner with 4H or 16+ will go on, and I'm happy to accept any invites. I think I would have bid nf 2H, it's a close call though since I can't handle a diamond rebid.
-
I'll go with 1NT. Unlike Josh said, I don't think my hand really too good for 18-19 bal in this auction. ♠Q is wrong, I have nothing in hearts (not even shortness for trump contract), My diamond suit is good but without support/ entries I still lose two tricks there. And maybe the worst thing in NT contract, clubs are blocked. Double being second choice and 2NT close third.

Finding the opponents high cards
Flameous replied to Ant590's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I'll try 2 rounds of clubs before anything. If they break, I can claim ten or eleven tricks depending on diamond finesse and move on to the next deal. -
I'd splinter 3!H after 1NT. I guess it could also be an auto splinter (have to ask my regular p about that) but even if it was, I think later club bids should show support.
-
My first reaction was double, meaning "Do something intelligent" like Codo put it. I guess it's also known as a "maximum double". If my double would be penalty, I pass. (In 2/1 GF 4C stands out of course)
-
No, I like to have good 16hcp for reverse with 4-5. I think I'll choose to bid 2S with this, 2D close second choice.
-
I agree with Codo and cherdano, 2D is NF and so 2H is reverse. (Atleast a mild one) I play NFBs so this would be the situation to me even without the pass. I also always double with 4 card hearts so after 2D I already know we have no heart fit. In conclusion I bid 2NT. I guess it's actually the most negative bid I can make after pass. I don't like my hand too much with a stiff diamond. Although p probably has one or two entries in hearts, it might still be hard to get those diamonds to produce tricks. J of clubs could be a critical card...
-
6NT for me. I think that if you can find the Q you will have a good chance of 13 tricks without any ruffs and... well if you can't 7 has no play.
-
I think I'll start with 2C Michael's. Even though it's extremely unlikely 1S would be passed around, the chance exists so why not to avoid it. I'm going to bid atleast to the 6 level anyways so I'll try to find out partners better suit.
-
Going a bit off the track, it's good to also understand what negative X means in context of negative freebids. With new suits showing 5+ NF, the double includes a lot more hand types but also many same ones. The main feature is that the 5+M with weak hand that would normally double and correct to the major is now bid directly, and bidding the slow way is forcing, generally GF or strong invitation. Depending whether jumps are played strong or not, all GF one suiters might go through negative X. However the same X may still contain those normal 6+ hands with exactly 4 card major. In many situations you can interpret different things from negative X only by knowing your opps play negative freebids, so it's a good idea to find out about that. As far as I know, this negative X doesn't have to be alerted even though the bids have to, so not knowing about it may lead to totally wrong assumptions.

Walsh responses and raising with 3
Flameous replied to cwiggins's topic in Natural Bidding Discussion
Concerning what helene pointed out about trials, if you can after trial show only 3 card support, it doesn't make it really inferior. I rarely raise with three, also mostly due habit and typical finnish style. (13)45 shape after major response is where I raise with any three cards without hcp to reverse. If the minors are swapped, I consider suit quality. (Where I believe most here would raise about always) I think in the end it doesn't make really much difference. When you consider constructive auction, you tend to find the right spot whether it goes showing directly 3 card support and then some artificial trials to find out what's going on, or bidding more naturally only 4 card support. While if it's a competetive auction, you have negative doubles and support doubles to work out your fit. In some balancing situations I guess other style has some benefit but can't tell which one because many dislike balancing over 1NT even compared to 2H or 2S. -
I open 1NT whenever possible, meaning also 14-16NT.
-
Oh right... I missed that this line doesn't work with spades 4-0 so I only counted hearts breaking 4-2 or 3-3 which is 84% unless I have something horribly wrong. Although still needs diamond return with spades 4-0 so it's not hopeless even then :)
-
My line is CA, SA, HA, HQ, win return after losing 2 clubs, now ruff heart twice to throw a diamond. Works with 3-3 and 4-2 hearts so it has near 85% odds.

Forcing pass (15+) 1♠ fert 1♣ 4+Major 10-14 (1♦ to ask which and 1 major to show own 5 carder) 1♥ no 4 card major 10-14, Unbal when V 1NT 10-12 NV/ 12-14 V 2♣ 6+♣, 6-11 2♦ 6+♦, 6-11 Pre-empts . . . What was the use of 1♦ opening again? :)
