I would've bid 5H instead of 4S (very little point in trying 5D). Now this auction is a little weird since we have two keycards, but the odds of making 6S are so good (as they were the last two rounds of bidding!) that I would just do that. It's not like we're getting rich from defending 6H, and they could easily make (sounds like LHO is void in spades?).
I think a room full of beginners that always lead trumps against partscores is likely to do better than a room full of beginners who randomly lead a card out of 13 against partscores.
I've noticed GIB in general makes very bad decisions about raising in competition. Here is an example: w/r MP J9x KJTxxx void Jxxx 1D 1H 1S ? GIB bid 2H with this.

Cash a bunch of diamonds, east must keep all four clubs (else you can just duck a club). Then cash all your major suit winners (east cannot profitably pitch his majors in any order, you can always strip them or force him to unguard clubs early) and play ace and a low club.
Whether pass is forcing is up to your agreements, but IMO it's not (I would like to play pass is forcing if r/w). Even if it were I would double. You have good defense, 4333 shape, a minimum hand, and bad trumps, all of which point to doubling.
Fred, I have two questions 1) Does this mean that you will bid 2N even with a very prime 4333 hand? It seems to me that I would not want to bid 2N with something like Axx Axx KQxx xxx, but it sounds like you do it anyway. Also I would really like to be able to bid 2N with a hand like KJx Qx Jxxx AQxx, but it seems like you like to bid 3C with these kinds of hands. How do you feel about this? I have always thought it was important to show the general nature of my honor structure in this auction. 2) In general I hate describing my exact shape when I think it's very likely I'm just going to declare 3N. Do you think this isn't a serious loss?
Hog, two things 1) Even though you said 5+ clubs, presumably your partner can be 4414. 2) Please provide an example hand where 4C is much more effective than bidding 1S (art GF) and then clubs (jumping to 4C, if need be!). I can easily provide hands for you where the opposite is true.
Probably 4 spades exactly and 5+ diamonds, and consequently a pretty good hand (the more diamonds the less good his hand has to be). Partner is unlikely to have 5+ spades, he could have bid Michaels but didn't. Then again if my partner was a B/I player he might not know that 2H in this position is Michaels, so this inference is not as strong.
I don't know about standard Bart, but many people play the sequence 1H-1N 2C-2D with 2D artificial, not a weak signoff in diamonds. If you play this, then obviously 1N is silly since you will never get to sign off in diamonds anyway, short of the 3 level.
